Tiger Talk
10/01/24
Dear Tiger Families and Friends:
Thank you ever so much for your kind and generous support of our West Cypress Hills Elementary PTO's major fundraiser for the school year, Apex. The Apex Leadership Team is amazing. Their daily character lessons are very inspiring. They even inspired the Kindness Wall (see picture below) where students could write kind notes to each other, write ideas for showing kindness, all in all a really kind of inspiring wall and an inspiring ten days of fun activities.
Although one of the rewards to Tigers for meeting their Apex goals was to have the opportunity to slime the Principal (aka me) it was a fabulous ten days and well worth being slimed.
We appreciate the work that our PTO put into making this event spectacular for all. We appreciate the lessons our Apex Leadership Team brought to our Tigers and the meaningful time spent with each and every Tiger. And, most of all, we appreciate YOUR generous support. Thank you for your donations to our fundraiser. Thank you for volunteering to help make our event so successful. Your kind and generous support is duly noted on our Apex Kindness Wall. Our fabulous WCHE PTO will put the funds to good use.
For the remainder of this school year, we would like to recognize our teachers and staff by providing them notes of thanks from our families. Please use this link if you would like to send a positive message to a staff member. I will be happy to pass it along.
With warmest, although somewhat slimy, regards,
Amy Russ, Principal

Classroom Guidance....Goal Setting.....Mindset
Hello WCHE families!
Classroom guidance is the part of my job that I enjoy the most, and September marked the first month that every class from K-5th was able to stop by my classroom for their first lesson.
The focus for the month was Goal Setting and Growth Mindset. During this time we were able to discuss topics like the importance of goals in helping us grow as learners. Also, we talked about how to use positive self-talk to keep us motivated and focused on our goals when we struggle during our early stages of learning a new skill.
In grades K-3 we also used the following books from the school library to better illustrate these objectives. In 4th and 5th grade we also discussed the difference between a long and short-term goal, and how to write each as a SMART goal.
During the month of September we will have grade-level attendance competitions!
Each week in September, the grade level with the highest percentage of students in attendance will receive an extra recess. Grade-level winners will be announced each Friday in September, and the extra recess will be rewarded on the following Monday morning.
CONGRATULATIONS 4th Grade AGAIN for winning our fourth week's attendance challenge. It was a tight race but our Tiger 4th Graders won....again!
Be Smart - Update SMART Tag!
Fall Enrichment Fun Begins Next Week!
We have great after school LTISD Fall Enrichment classes that begin this week. If you signed up your Tiger(s) to attend our Fall Enrichment classes, please be sure to also update SMART Tag to indicate the days that your Tiger(s) will be attending Fall Enrichment instead of going home the usual way.
We have lots of 5th Grade Girls participating in KARDIVAS, for example.. They usually meet on Thursdays; so, Kardivas' moms and dads should update SMART Tag to reflect that their 5th Grade daughters attend Fall Enrichment on Thursdays. Otherwise, Kardiva daughters might be sent home on the bus instead of enjoying the fun that Kardivas have.
Lost a SMART Tag?
No Worries! We can Replace SMART Tags
If your Tiger(s) lost part or all of the SMART Tag equipment, we are happy to replace them upon receipt of the cost to replace the missing or broken items. Just let our Receptionist, Mrs. Michelle Harper, know what needs to be replaced. She can accept payment by exact cash (sorry, we have zero change) or by check payable to WCHE. The price list is:
Scannable badge......$5
Reel and/or lanyard......$5
Oops, lost the whole thing!......$10

Flu Vaccines for Students
Dear Lake Travis ISD Parents and Guardians,
Lake Travis ISD has partnered with Lake Hills Pharmacy to provide flu vaccines to students in grades PK-8 on October 15-17 as follows:
October 15: ● Serene Hills Elementary ● West Cypress Hills Elementary ● Lake Travis Middle School
October 16: ● Bee Cave Elementary ● Rough Hollow Elementary ● Lake Travis Elementary ● Hudson Bend Middle School
October 17: ● Lake Pointe Elementary ● Lakeway Elementary ● Bee Cave Middle School
Please note, the flu shots are optional, and they will only be administered with written parental consent. Consent forms (linked here) must be filled out completely, signed, and returned to your child’s school nurse by Wednesday, October 9. You may write in your prescription insurance information or submit a copy of your insurance card. Individuals who do not have prescription insurance coverage must provide $20 cash with the consent form.
Students who do not submit a form with cash payment or insurance information by Wednesday,
October 9, will not receive a flu shot at school.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu vaccine is the best defense against the influenza virus. For more information about the seasonal influenza vaccine and a copy of the most current Vaccine Information Sheet (VIS), please CLICK HERE. If you would like for your child to receive the flu vaccine prior to these in-school flu shot clinics, please contact your local pharmacy or pediatrician. Also, children older than six months who are uninsured or underinsured can receive flu shots at the Shots for Tots/Big Shots clinics provided by Austin Public Health. To make an appointment, please call 512-972-5520.
Should you have any questions, you may reach me via email at ennisj@ltisdschools.org, or by phone at512-533-6015.
Sincerely,

Discovery/Gifted & Talented Program Accepting Referrals
Through October 18
Attention LTISD Parents and Guardians,
The Discovery Program, otherwise known as Gifted and Talented, is now accepting parent referrals for GT Screening via this google form.
Transfer students, who were already identified as GT coming from their previous district, should submit their Google form as soon as possible, as the transfer student screening will be set within 30 days of the first day of school. Parents should send proof of their child's selection/participation in the previous GT program directly to the campus GT coordinator. See below for a campus contact list.
Parents can submit referrals for screening up until the end of the first 9 weeks, by October 18, 2024. Students in Grades 1-5 will be tested during the 2nd 9 weeks of instruction. If the referral and permission forms are not submitted by the deadline, the student will have to wait until next year's screening opportunity, as the spring screening session is only for students moving in new to the district after the fall testing window is closed.
Kindergarten students can be referred for GT testing beginning in January 2025. More details will be shared regarding this process at the end of the first semester.
The forms and further information about the program can be found here. A virtual Discovery Parent Information Meeting will be held September 27 at 11:30 am.
Once the request is submitted through the Google form, the campus GT coordinator will contact parents via email after October 18 to share pertinent information.
You are also welcome to contact our Tiger GT Teacher Erin Wyatt at any time with questions.
