Encore Spotlight of the Week
Our encore classes have so many great things going on. I want to spotlight some of those throughout the year.
This week our Encore Spotlight is Music. Mr. Carr is doing so many fun and exciting things in Music class. It is always great to walk by his classroom and see the smiles and excitement on the faces of everyone in the room. Here is an update from Mr. Carr:
In my class we are currently exploring the basic elements of music including lessons on the beat, rhythm, melody and tempo. We have been exploring these elements through singing, movement and instrument play, using various percussion instruments (festival drums, tambourines, cabasas and more.) K-2 enjoyed playing rhythm eggs to a song called "I Know a Chicken." They have also loved singing a song by Lauire Beckner called, "The Cat Came Back." 3-5 enjoyed working in groups of four, playing drums, cabasa and tambourine to a tune we set to the poem "Way Down South." They have also enjoyed singing the songs "Flowers," by Miley Cyrus, and "Time of Your Life" by Green Day.
All grades have also had a blast playing the Boomwhackers which are plastic tubes cut to various lengths that produce different pitches when struck. The kids love these, and have been able to play a few songs including,"Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," and "Jingle Bells."
Currently we are exploring tempo in music and grades 2-5 are learning a song with a dance called, "I Let Her Go," which gradually speeds up each time you sing it. K-1 is also exploring the concept of tempo by playing the rhythm eggs, fast and slow.
The next few lessons will take a closer look at rhythm and students will be introduced to quarter and eighth notes. We will also be using the rhythm sticks, which are basically like drum sticks, to learn how to play different rhythm patterns and do a fun play-along dance song called "Rhythm Stick Line Dance."
Also, we have explored the concepts of beat, rhythm, melody and tempo using a few online resources including "Chrome Music Lab-Siong Maker," and Google's "Blob Opera" (which is the coolest thing on the entire internet!). I have uploaded links to both of these sites in the Google Classroom for grades 3-5.
Lastly, we will be spending a few minutes of each lesson to prepare for our Christmas concert in December. Each class will be performing two Christmas songs.
Thanks!
Caleb Carr
