February 2025
Message from the Principal
I’m so glad to be back from medical leave and appreciate all the support and well wishes. Thank you for your flexibility with snow days and the adjustments to parent-teacher conferences—we know these changes can be challenging, and we appreciate your understanding. Fortunately, the weather is looking up, and spring will be here before we know it!
As we approach the end of the third quarter, let’s continue working together to support our students in finishing strong. Thank you for being such an important part of our school community.
Mrs. Sonderegger

25-26 Kindergarten Enrollment
Kindergarten enrollment is an exciting time in the life of a family! At Auburn-Washburn, the enrollment process begins with Kindergarten Roundup, an event designed to introduce families to the school and staff. All families of incoming kindergarten students are encouraged to attend Kindergarten Roundup to learn more about the year ahead. This year, Kindergarten Roundup is scheduled for Friday, April 4, 2025. For more information and to register, visit www.usd437.net/roundup.
For detailed information about the entire kindergarten registration process, including a step-by-step guide, please click here. For those who have already registered for Kindergarten Roundup, specific Farley information will be sent to families tomorrow!

Upcoming State Assessments for 3rd-6th Grade Students
State assessments for our 3rd-6th grade students are coming up soon! These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and for our school to measure progress toward academic goals. The results help us identify strengths and areas for growth, ensuring we continue providing high-quality instruction tailored to student needs. Teachers will sending home more information with students about specific days/times of the testing sessions.
Parents can support their child’s success by ensuring they get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time each day. Encouraging a positive mindset and reminding them to do their best can also make a big difference! Thank you for partnering with us to support student learning.
Morning Arrival and Breakfast
Breakfast is served until 8:40 each day. Students arriving on a late bus will have the option of picking up a quick breakfast item, but students being dropped off by a car need to enter the cafeteria before 8:40 in order to get breakfast.
The car drop off line runs from 8:25-8:40. Farley staff members are needed in classrooms at 8:40, so any students dropped off after 8:40 will need to be dropped off at the front doors. There will not be staff supervision during arrival after 8:40.
Thank you for helping your child have a great start to the day!
Attendance
DID YOU KNOW?
- Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves.
Important Attendance Definitions:
Tardy - arriving after 8:45 am
Early pick up - leaving before 3:30 pm
Unexcused Absences - absent without reasonable justification
According to Kansas law (K.S.A. 72-1113) a student is truant if they have missed the following without legitimate excuse:
Three (3) consecutive days
Five (5) unexcused absences in a semester
Seven (7) unexcused absences in a school year
If a student has excessive excused absences (more than 10), a doctor’s note will be required for it to be excused. Another option is that you can bring your child to the school clinic and the school nurse can determine if your child should stay home.
