February 2025- "Rolling Hills Sticks Together"
From the Principal
Dear Rolling Hills Families,
As we enter February, it's common for New Year’s resolutions to lose their momentum—but not at Rolling Hills! We have so much to celebrate and even more to look forward to as we continue to grow and thrive together.
Reading Progress and Winter Benchmarks
Our students are making incredible strides in their reading skills by dedicating 15-20 minutes to reading at home each night. Thank you to all the parents who support this nightly habit—it truly makes a difference! I’m excited to see the results of this hard work reflected in the upcoming spring assessments. Currently, teachers are reviewing winter benchmark data and comparing it to the fall results to track progress and plan next steps.
Recess Guidelines
A common question this time of year is: How do we decide whether recess is indoors or outdoors? At all Mukwonago elementary schools, the rule is simple—if the temperature or wind chill is below zero, recess will be indoors. That said, we love getting students outside whenever possible to burn off energy, especially on non-PE days. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. A quick reminder: students without snow pants must remain on the blacktop areas during snowy days.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Mark your calendars for parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday, February 12. If your child’s teacher has requested a conference, please prioritize this opportunity to connect. Your involvement is vital to your child’s growth, and we greatly value your partnership in their education.
Open Enrollment
February also marks the beginning of the open enrollment period for the Mukwonago School District. If you know friends or family who are considering schools, please share the wonderful things happening at Rolling Hills. Open enrollment forms can be found on the Mukwonago School District website or through the District Office. Thank you for helping us spread the word about the amazing opportunities here!
Thank you for your continued support, dedication, and encouragement. Together, we’re creating an exceptional learning environment for our students.
Love Blue, Live Gold, and have a fantastic month!
Warm regards,
Dr. Ron Schlicht
Principal

Vision and Hearing Screen Time
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Vision and hearing screens will take place at your child’s school during the month of February. First graders will receive vision and hearing screenings, and kindergarten, third and fifth graders will receive vision screening.
Your child will receive a copy of the screening results. The form will indicate if no further evaluation is needed or if follow up is recommended with a Physician, Optometrist, or Audiologist for further evaluation. Results will be documented in your child’s school health record and available to parent/guardian upon request.
If you have a child in second, fourth, and/or sixth grade, and feel they would benefit from a free vision or hearing screen, please contact your child’s school health assistant to request a vision and/or hearing screen for your child. If you would not like your child screened, also contact your child’s school health assistant.
Thank you,

Mukwonago Area School District Preschool Screening
March 10, 2025 from 2:30p-5:30p
Brooklife Church (857 S Rochester St, Mukwonago)
Do you have concerns about your child’s development?
The Mukwonago Area School District will conduct preschool screening for children between the ages of 3-5 years old, or children not attending 5 year old kindergarten. If you have concerns about your child's development, you are encouraged to register. If the child is not an MASD resident, they must be in an MASD school aged program. District staff will screen your child in the areas of cognitive development, personal/social skills, fine motor (small muscle), gross motor (large muscle), adaptive, speech/language, hearing, and vision. This screening is NOT 4K or 5K kindergarten screening. There is no cost, and takes approximately 45 minutes. To schedule a required appointment, please contact Gina Berka at 262.363.6300 x24201, or by email at berkagi@masd.k12.wi.us.
MASD Reading Rumble
4th-6th grade students have the opportunity to sign up for the MASD Reading Rumble! This is an optional reading trivia competition that takes place in MAY 2025. Students will form teams of 2-4 students at their grade level, create a team name, and divide up the reading of 10 chapter books chosen by a district committee. If students want to participate, they will need to have a permission slip signed. They will have check-ins throughout the next few months until the School Rumble in May, where they will gather in a bracket-style competition to see which teams are the fastest and most accurate in remembering details from the books.
In addition, the top team at each school will compete at the District Rumble on May 21 at the PAC. If you want more information, please email
Mrs. Coopman at coopmti@masd.k12.wi.us or Mrs. Barton at bartome@masd.k12.wi.us
Thank you and happy reading!
School Counselor Note
Dear Families,
Social awareness is a skill that we continue to work on and develop with students when at school. Social awareness is the capacity to interact with others in a way that shows respect for their ideas and behaviors, recognizes her/his impact on them, and uses cooperation and patience in social situations.
Benefits of social awareness include increased:
self-reflection of actions and goals
empathy through perspective-taking
responsibility of personal actions and consequences
self-esteem and self-confidence
academic and recreational achievements
use of strategies to avoid or negotiate negative situations or behavior
Here are some ways to help develop social awareness:
Talk about your own emotions with your kids. Label your feelings and explain what made you feel that way. If you have uncomfortable emotions, talk about what would help you to feel better.
If a conflict arises, ask your child to think about how the other person might be feeling.
Identify a neighbor who might be going through a difficult time. Think of ways you might be able to help.
Some books with themes related to social awareness are:
Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller
Mr. Peabody’s Apples by Madonna
Odd Velvet by Mary Whitcomb
What If Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick
If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Student Council
Our annual Student Council sponsored “Feed the Dream” food drive to commemorate the call to service that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired in all of us, was an overwhelmingly grand success. The response from Rolling Hills students and staff was heartwarming. We are happy to be able to donate loads of non-perishable food and soap products to the Mukwonago Food Pantry. Thank you to all for your generosity and for supporting this service project
Looking forward, our next spirit day is , February 17th, “Show Your Love Day” for which you can wear something to show what you love. What is it that you love?...Or wear RED or UW Badger gear because it’s also National Wisconsin Day (Feb. 15)!
The Raptor Way
During announcements in January, Dr.Schilicht talked about Responsibility. Responsibility is when you can be relied on to do the things that are expected or required of you. You do what you say and you say what you do. Sometimes we don’t feel like what we have to do is very important or necessary. However, if we all stopped being responsible, our class would be a messy, disorganized, unkind place without any teacher! When we are kind and responsible, our class can run smoothly and everyone has an opportunity to learn and grow. Our stick together duo for January was: Rock, paper, scissors stick together to help you overcome an argument or a challenge that you are facing with another person or a group of people. When you can’t come to a compromise you can fairly use rock, paper, scissors to solve it.
Students continue to earn ROAR cards for respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors and are enjoying all the fun things the ROAR store has to offer. We always look for donations for the ROAR store. You may send donations to school or contact Ms. Napierala. Thank you!
