What is the Superintendent Preparation Academy?
The Superintendent Preparation Academy is a comprehensive leadership development experience to prepare individuals who will be the next “class” of superintendent candidates – those considering the pursuit of positions in the year 2023 or thereafter. This experience will also help you grow as an educational professional regardless of your leadership position and strengthen your skills and knowledge to increase performance today and tomorrow.
Why was the Academy developed?
MLI is committed to K-12 school districts and public institutions throughout Michigan and the success of all children by developing, deploying and supporting outstanding executive leadership.
There will be an unprecedented number of superintendents retiring over the next decade. At the same time, fewer people with the necessary capacity-building experiences are aspiring to move into these critical leadership roles. In addition, the superintendency has become increasingly complex. It is critical that future superintendents have the best preparation and network possible as you take leadership of the district, and we want to help you be successful.

and behavioral analysis. By identifying the behaviors, motivators, and influencers active in
your culture, the analysis provides you with information to assist with identifying gaps between the the Board my be seeking and the candidate may posses. The Board can utilize the information to select a candidate. Together the team will work on the areas to form a stronger governance body. This creates a better fit and positive results for all.
You can also use this with your leadership team to strengthen your team’s effectiveness.
Three Questions: Moving Forward Into 2023 -2024 Written by: Dr. Debbie McFalone
As we near the end of the 2022-23 school year, exemplary leaders are intentionally pausing to reflect on how they might focus the energy and spirit of their people to move forward. It’s so important to cultivate growth that way!
As you consider how to shape a conversation and develop ownership for the path ahead, I encourage you to consider these three questions from principal Liz Garden:
What shall we sunset? Strong leaders ask courageous questions, and thoughtfully consider whether their schools are continuing to engage in tasks that are not meeting the needs of today’s students. Are we repeating things that are not adding to our core work, and that are distracting from our true priorities? Let’s commit to cutting out things that are no longer meeting the critical needs of our students today!
What shall we amplify? What seeds have we planted in beginning new programs that we want to invest in and expand? Perhaps you designed an MTSS program this year and want to ensure everyone on staff has the same quality professional learning next year…or perhaps you had a pilot program in math that produced really great results for your students. Spending time and resources to amplify success improves your school for everyone!
What shall we create? What needs do our students or adults currently have that we want to address? One principal recently requested that his instructional coach design a “teacher’s solace room” where there were two or three comfortable chairs, soft lighting, calm music available, and water and fruit in the refrigerator. This principal believes that supporting the strength of her teachers will ultimately impact her students—and she’s absolutely right.
Other leaders are thoughtfully looking at their daily schedules to ensure more flexibility and individual progress time for students…Their kiddos are more engaged simply because their basic needs for connection and challenge are being met. This is a time for our most creative minds to be at work shaping the schools of the future!
So how about you? Is it time to gather your leadership team together for a candid and thoughtful conversation around these three courageous questions? The dialogue itself may be a time for your team to coalesce together around their values and beliefs—and that will be a gift to all the people in your organization for the coming year.
