Counselor Talk with Mrs. Taylor
Lincoln Elementary School Counselor
Starting summer with a "Coping Skill" Splash.
I am excited to share with you a recent lesson I conducted with our K-2 students on the Zones of Regulation and coping skills. This engaging lesson aimed to help our young learners understand their emotions and learn effective strategies to manage them. To make the experience both educational and fun, we used pool floats as symbols for different coping skills.
Understanding the Zones of Regulation
The Zones of Regulation is a framework designed to help children recognize and manage their emotions by categorizing their feelings and states of alertness into four colored zones:
- Blue Zone: Low states of alertness (e.g., sad, tired, sick)
- Green Zone: Optimal state for learning (e.g., calm, happy, focused)
- Yellow Zone: Heightened states of alertness (e.g., anxious, excited, silly)
- Red Zone: Extremely heightened states (e.g., angry, out of control)
During the lesson, we introduced each zone with examples and discussed how we might feel and behave in each one. The students eagerly shared their own experiences and began to understand that all zones are okay, but the goal is to use strategies to return to the green zone.
Coping Skills and Pool Floats
To make learning coping skills interactive and memorable, we used different pool floats to represent each skill:
A Special Message from Your School Counselor
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Summer is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen family bonds and create lasting memories with your little ones. Here are some fun and engaging activities that you can enjoy together as a family this summer:
1. Nature Scavenger Hunt
Nature Scavenger Hunt
Create a list of items for your child to find in your backyard, a local park, or during a nature walk. Items can include different types of leaves, rocks, flowers, or even specific insects. This activity encourages exploration and curiosity about the natural world.
2. Family Game Night
Choose a variety of board games, card games, or puzzles that are age-appropriate and fun for everyone. Family game nights can teach kids about teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship while providing plenty of laughs.
Sample game: Summer Pictonary
3. DIY Craft Projects
Set up a craft station at home with supplies like paper, markers, glue, and recycled materials. Projects can include making friendship bracelets, painting rocks, or creating homemade greeting cards. Crafting together fosters creativity and provides a sense of accomplishment.
Example: Cute pinecone Owls will be a hit this summer with your kids.

5. Visit Local Attractions
Explore local attractions such as zoos, aquariums, museums, or botanical gardens. Many places offer family-friendly activities and educational programs that can be both fun and informative.
6. Gardening Together
Start a small garden with your child. Plant flowers, vegetables, or herbs and take care of them together. Gardening teaches responsibility, patience, and an appreciation for nature.
7. Picnic in the Park
Pack a picnic and head to a nearby park for a meal outdoors. Bring along some games or a kite to fly for added fun. Picnics are a simple way to enjoy the beauty of nature and spend quality time together.
By participating in these activities, you can create a summer full of joy, learning, and bonding with your child. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and make cherished memories together.
Wishing you a summer filled with happiness and adventure!
I Will Miss You Second Grade- A letter from Mrs. Taylor
Dear Second Graders,
As the school year comes to a close, I want to take a moment to express how proud I am of each one of you. It has been a joy watching you grow, learn, and shine this year. While it’s always bittersweet to say goodbye, I am so excited for the new adventures that await you at Red Cedars.
You have achieved so much during your time here, and I want you to carry that confidence and curiosity with you as you move forward. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to learn something new, and every mistake is a step towards success.
Here are a few reminders as you embark on this next chapter:
1. Always Be Kind
Kindness is one of the most powerful things you can share with the world. Be kind to your new classmates, teachers, and yourself. A simple act of kindness can brighten someone’s day and create a ripple of positivity.
2. Believe in Yourself
You are capable of amazing things. When you believe in yourself, you can overcome any obstacle. Trust in your abilities, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Your teachers and friends are there to support you.
3. Stay Curious
Keep asking questions and exploring the world around you. Your curiosity will lead you to incredible discoveries and help you grow as a learner and a person. Remember, every new experience is a chance to learn something valuable.
4. Make New Friends
Building new friendships can be one of the most exciting parts of moving to a new school. Be open, be friendly, and you’ll find wonderful new friends who share your interests and make school even more enjoyable.
5. Keep a Positive Attitude
A positive attitude can make a big difference in how you experience new situations. Embrace the changes with an open heart and a positive mindset, and you’ll find that even the toughest challenges can be fun.
I will miss seeing your bright smiles and hearing your laughter in the hallways, but I know you are ready for this next step. Red Cedars is lucky to have such a fantastic group of students joining their community. I am confident that you will continue to thrive and make us all proud.
Please remember, even though you are moving on, you will always be a part of our Lincoln family. I am here for you, cheering you on, and eager to hear about all your new adventures.
Wishing you all the best for a wonderful and exciting journey ahead!
Love,
Mrs. Taylor
