Your Lister News from the Lister News Team
Deaf Awareness Week
We are excited to inform you about Deaf Awareness Week, which runs from 6th May to 12th May. This annual event is dedicated to promoting understanding, acceptance, and support for the deaf and hard of hearing community. Lister Community School is the proud host of the only resource provision for deaf children in Newham, so this is a special week at Lister! Our Lister students, who are deaf, are integrated seamlessly into 90% of their mainstream lessons. This means that all of our Lister students work together inclusively and make no distinction between their peers dependent on hearing levels.
During Deaf Awareness Week, we will be incorporating various activities and discussions into our curriculum to raise awareness and educate our students about deaf culture, communication methods such as sign language, and the challenges faced by individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. We will also be baking and running a cake sale on Thursday 9th May, in the Lister Agora, to raise funds for NDCS and celebrate our inclusive Lister society (please send your children to school with some pocket money if they want to buy a delicious cake!).
We encourage you to join us in fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community. You can participate by engaging in conversations with your children about deafness, learning some basic sign language together, or exploring resources and literature about deaf culture. Please find a link to the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) which hosts a wealth of information on deafness awareness.
Together, we can work towards building a more inclusive society where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their hearing abilities.
Year 11 Arts Exhibition!
Save the Date: Friday 24th May
Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to see the early work of Picasso or Hepworth? To have a chance to see the first steps of a Coco Chanel or Alexander McQueen (remember that McQueen went to Rokeby - part of the NCL Trust!)? If so, perhaps this is your chance! Drop in to Lister on Friday 24th May between 3:15-18:00 - to see an exhibition of the wonderful work that our inspirational year 11 students have completed in their creative subjects.
Often the work of GCSE students is completed in an exam hall and sent off to be marked by an examiner - parents and carers are not given the chance to celebrate the culmination of all of the years of effort that has gone into producing these final pieces of GCSE work. In answer to this, we at Lister School wanted to share with you all the chance to see an exhibition of the creative work completed by students for their art, photography and textiles courses. Please come along to enjoy the breakthrough work of this talented group.
A Message from the Behaviour Team at Lister
- As we shared last week, Lister School now has a Stationery Shop, based in the Student Office. Pupils are expected to have full equipment to maximise their learning, progress and attainment. The full list can be bought for £3.50, via cash payment only.
We are passionate about ensuring communication with parents is clear and timely. Therefore, 'home notes' on Go4Schools are available. It is important that parents and pupils check their Go4Schools to see praises earnt and detentions, for the following day.
From Wednesday 8th May, all -3 and -4 detentions will take place the following day, after school. Lunchtime detentions are being changed to after school detentions so that we can continue to improve the good behaviour at Lister to the point where it is outstanding.
-3 detentions (after school, 25 minutes): Assembly Hall
-4 detentions (after school, 50minutes): Large Canteen.
Late to form = -3 detention: 8.30am-8.49am
Late after form time = -4 detention: 8.50am onwards
Please see the impact of poor punctuality to pupils' progress and attainment in the infographic above:
Lister's Website - a Shining Light
Here at the Lister News Team, we are always amazed at the work our colleagues do to try and support students and parents with their mental health. Not a day goes by without us seeing another recommendation of how to improve stress levels, or deal with depression. It is something we love about the staff at Lister - they care a lot - often highlighting a support group or workshop that is available in Newham to make life a little easier. This week, rather than looking out to the broader world of Newham, we are going to shine a light on the Lister website which has lots of helpful, simple steps you can take as a parent or student to improve mental health. Why not try clicking on this link and seeing whether there are some small steps you can take to make life work a bit more smoothly?
