Flint Community Schools: A Vision for the Future
Dear Families and Staff,
Our vision of "Reenergizing the Pride, Renovating the Plans, Rebuilding the Possibilities, and Repurposing for a brighter future" is becoming a reality. This is just the beginning, and we invite each of you to help us set the stage for our scholars to excel in an environment that is safe, secure, vibrant, and forward-thinking.
Despite facing challenges, we have much to be proud of. This year, we have purchased new library books and supplies for schools, and Southwestern Classical Academy's SWP Site received the Molina Healthcare School-Based Clinic of the Year Award. Eleven Flint Community Schools earned the prestigious MTSS Data Utilization award. Additionally, we implemented a new security system (360 Navigate Visitors Management System), renovated school parking lots, and installed new lighting. Flint Community Schools is also set to receive ten new electric school buses.
The United Teachers of Flint and FCS have reached a historic restoration agreement, paving the way for educational excellence. We hosted a very successful District Family Literacy Event and completed a new website and mobile app for the district and all FCS schools. As of this year, nine FCS schools have been recognized with the Capturing Kids' Hearts® National Showcase Schools Award for cultivating relational capacity, improving school culture, strengthening trust between teachers and students, building self-managing classrooms, creating accountability, and improving academic performance.
As we conclude this school year full of great accomplishments, we should highlight the things that make our school district so resilient. Congratulations to the Class of 2024. We honor and celebrate your hard-earned achievements and the remarkable journey you have undertaken. Flint Community Schools held its graduation ceremony for Southwestern Classical Academy and Accelerated Learning Academy students at the Whiting Auditorium on June 4. This year’s class featured 122 graduates, a significant increase from the 77 graduates in 2023 and 83 graduates in 2022. In 2021, there were less than 50 graduates. The future is bright, and it belongs to you. Go out and make your mark on the world. Dream big, work hard, and never doubt your ability to achieve greatness.
Congratulations to our Annual Parent of the Year Honorees! We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible dedication and commitment of our parents who go above and beyond for our scholars and school community. Your unwavering support and involvement make a world of difference. Thank you for being shining examples of what it means to be part of the Flint Community Schools family. Together, we are stronger!
This year, the school district will have completed $100 million in ESSER funding to renovate four schools: Doyle Ryder Education Center, Potter Elementary, Brownell STEM Academy, and Holmes STEM Middle Schools Academy. Looking forward, we are on the cusp of an exciting era for Flint Community Schools, thanks to the generous $14 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, supplemented by an additional $26 million in federal ESSER funds. This investment marks a transformative chapter in our journey, one that will see the Brownell STEM Academy and Holmes STEM Middle School campus evolve into a state-of-the-art educational hub. "The Cube," a new community and educational space, symbolizes our commitment to academic excellence and community building. It's about creating spaces that ignite imagination, foster creativity, and empower our scholars to explore vast possibilities and opportunities.
Another major renovation project is scheduled to begin this fall at the Summerfield Early Childhood Education Center in Flint. A $5 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to the Genesee Intermediate School District will support the work. The improvements will include a reconfigured main entrance, a repaired parking lot, a new roof, a boiler system, and windows. Together, the updates will lead to an enhanced learning environment and a more welcoming space for young children and their families.
We encourage everyone to celebrate each achievement, no matter its scale, as they collectively contribute to our vibrant school community. Flint Community Schools is an ever-evolving beacon of hope, change, and growth, and together, with your continued support, we'll pave the way for a more prosperous educational future.
Enjoy your summer and we look forward to welcoming you all back on August 7th, 2024 for the start of our 2024-2025 school year!
A New Era for Brownell and Holmes
Holmes Renovations
Brownell Renovations
The Completion of the Renovations and the Construction of "The Cube"
We are nearing the end of one chapter and the beginning of another marking significant strides and major milestones in the district's quest to create cutting-edge educational facilities. FCS Superintendent Kevelin Jones highlighted the importance of this project as part of his vision of "Reenergizing the Pride, Renovating the Plans, Rebuilding the Possibilities, and Repurposing for a brighter future!"
The comprehensive renovation plan included upgrading building façades, renovating the early childhood wing at Brownell, developing new playgrounds, replacing the running track, updating the football field, installing basketball courts, and constructing a new community hub, nicknamed "The Cube." The parking lot will also be rerouted to enhance access to The Cube and the early childhood wing.
The Cube, a 5,000-square-foot multipurpose building, is a pivotal element of the renovation. Envisioned as a flexible space for students, staff, and residents, it will be usable throughout the school day and during extended hours. The facility is designed to host neighborhood meetings, adult education classes, recreational activities, services for seniors, and after-school programming. The Flint Center for Educational Excellence and the Brownell-Holmes Neighborhood Association will play key roles in supporting activities within The Cube.
It was an ambitious goal but nonetheless Flint Community Schools is poised to enhance its educational infrastructure and create a vibrant community space where residents can gather, learn, and grow. This initiative symbolizes a new era for Flint Community Schools, where the focus is as much on building community as it is on academic excellence – a true testament to the power of collaboration and vision in shaping the future of education for FCS scholars, staff, and school communities.
Stay tune! The renovations are almost over and the spaces will be open to public during our ribbon cutting ceremonies.
Flint Community Schools Celebrates Largest Graduating Class in Four Years
In a momentous event that Superintendent Kevelin Jones likened to the Super Bowl, Flint Community Schools celebrated its largest graduating class in four years. “This is better,” Jones declared, capturing the excitement and significance of the occasion. Hundreds of families and friends gathered at the Whiting Auditorium on June 4 to cheer on the graduates from Southwestern Classical Academy and Accelerated Learning Academy, their enthusiastic roars echoing through the venue multiple times before the conferring of the diplomas.
This year’s graduating class featured 122 students, a remarkable increase from the 77 graduates in 2023 and 83 graduates in 2022. The numbers represent a significant leap from 2021, when fewer than 50 students graduated. This impressive growth underscores the resilience and determination of Flint’s scholars, as well as the unwavering commitment of the staff who have dedicated themselves to ensuring that students can grow and thrive despite the challenges they face.
“This not only a testament to the scholars but to the staff who have dedicated themselves to ensuring that our students can grow and thrive despite the challenges they face,” Superintendent Jones emphasized, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this achievement. The dedicated educators and supportive families have played crucial roles in guiding these students to this milestone, demonstrating the strength and unity of the Flint Community Schools.
The ceremony was filled with joy and pride as graduates walked across the stage to receive their diplomas, each step marking the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance. The event was not just a celebration of academic success but also a powerful affirmation of the community’s belief in the potential and future of its young people. Symbolizing hope and progress for Flint Community Schools. Their achievements reflect the positive strides being made within the district, inspiring current and future students to aim high and pursue their dreams. This significant milestone serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of what can be accomplished with determination, support, and a shared vision for success.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024! Your hard-earned achievements and remarkable journey are a testament to your resilience and dedication. The future is bright, and it belongs to you. Dream big, work hard, and never doubt your ability to achieve greatness. The Flint community eagerly anticipates the incredible contributions you will make in the years to come.
