MARCH IS READING MONTH!!
READING is DOG-GONE FUN!
To celebrate March is Reading month, we will be embarking on a special project, an all school book club. Each family is receiving a copy of the book, Fenway and Hattie by Victoria J. Coe. Told from a dog’s point of view, it is not only fun, but it also shows our own perspective isn’t the only one out there. Two people--or in this case two species--can experience the same thing and interpret it differently! There are at least two sides to every story. And when you read Fenway and Hattie, you’ll only get Fenway’s side. So, readers will have to figure out what is going on from the human perspective. We hope this leads to a lot of great family discussion!
With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at Amanda Moore. Everyone-students, parents, principal, secretary, teachers--everyone, will be reading along! We are asking that as a family, you set aside approximately 15 minutes per night. In class, there may be a variety of activities which discuss or explore the book. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. Enjoy this special reading time with your children.
Check out our Fenway and Hattie weebly page at fenandhat.weebly.com
Please share responses from your family on the Family Response Board! Also, use the opportunity to read and enjoy others posts! Additionally, if you would like to hear a staff member read a chapter, you will find the tab “Listen to Chapters” on the weebly site. Throughout March, everyone will be talking about Fenway and Hattie! “When a whole school reads a book, there’s a whole lot to talk about!” With your help, we can and will build a community of readers at our school!

Green School Environmental Tip
Reducing and Reusing Basics
The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place. Making a new product requires a lot of materials and energy - raw materials must be extracted from the earth, and the product must be fabricated then transported to wherever it will be sold. As a result, reduction and reuse are the most effective ways you can save natural resources, protect the environment and save money.
Benefits of Reducing and Reusing
· Prevents pollution caused by reducing the need to harvest new raw materials
· Saves energy
· Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change
· Helps sustain the environment for future generations
· Saves money
· Reduces the amount of waste that will need to be recycled or sent to landfills and incinerators
· Allows products to be used to their fullest extent
Ideas on How to Reduce and Reuse
· Buy used. You can find everything from clothes to building materials at specialized reuse centers and consignment shops. Often, used items are less expensive and just as good as new.
· Look for products that use less packaging. When manufacturers make their products with less packaging, they use less raw material. This reduces waste and costs. These extra savings can be passed along to the consumer. Buying in bulk, for example, can reduce packaging and save money.
· Buy reusable over disposable items. Look for items that can be reused; the little things can add up. For example, you can bring your own silverware and cup to work, rather than using disposable items.
· Maintain and repair products, like clothing, tires and appliances, so that they won't have to be thrown out and replaced as frequently.
Borrow, rent or share items that are used infrequently, like party decorations, tools or furniture.
