From School Administration
We are moving into our 5th week of school; as we reach the midpoint of this quarter, it's a great time to check in on your child's academic progress and overall well-being. Our teachers are here to support your child’s growth and success, and maintaining open communication is key to this partnership.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s performance, assignments, or classroom experiences, we encourage you to reach out to their teacher. This dialogue not only helps us address any issues early on but also ensures we can work together to support your child in achieving their goals.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement. Together, we can make this a successful and rewarding quarter for your child.
Mrs. Anoff and Mr. Scobie

New Information
Seasonal Flu
The Health Department encourages people of all ages to get a seasonal flu shot from a healthcare provider, local pharmacy, retailer or big box store. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed work and school (even virtual school) due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations and deaths. Please see the link below for a list of flu clinic locations, dates/times and registration.
Annual Partnership Information
The HCPSS Partnerships 2023-2024 Annual Snapshot has just been released. The snapshot includes a link to school system partners including each school’s partners, as well as system wide, curricular, and program office partnerships. The snapshot highlights how partners play a vital role in encouraging students to reach their full potential.
Bringing Clarity to our HCPSS Student Code of Conduct
Our Student Code of Conduct is our guiding framework that emphasizes instruction and restorative practices rather than punishment for our students. This week we will take a deeper dive into its overarching commitments for our staff.
For our staff, including administrators, teachers, and support staff, we hold high expectations and values to ensure our students are achieving success. Some of these values include:
Plan and implement high quality, engaging instruction that meets the needs of our diverse learners using the Maryland College and Career Readiness standards and HCPSS curriculum.
Create and establish a positive school culture rooted in relationships that honors and accepts all students’ identities and differences. Staff will support all students’ social emotional needs by providing a safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
Ensure students receive required ESOL and special education services, Section 504 accommodations, and other necessary supports to address diverse learning needs of our students.
All staff are knowledgeable and adhere to HCPSS policies and will communicate with families in a timely manner when situations arise.
When responding to challenging situations, staff will apply de-escalation strategies and provide time and space for students to reset. Staff will provide opportunities to re-establish relationships when harm occurs.
Information Worth Repeating
From the Health Room
Dear Lisbon Community:
Each year, the Howard County Public School System partners with the Maryland Partnership for Prevention to bring flu immunizations into our schools for students. This year, they will also be offering the latest Covid vaccine if it is available at the time of the clinics. The clinic at Lisbon Elementary School will be held on Monday, October 21st during school hours. If you would like your child to be vaccinated against the flu and/or Covid at this clinic, please register at this link: https://www.marylandvax.org/appointment/en/reg/9012252769
You are not required to provide your child’s insurance information. If you have any concerns about the new Covid vaccine, you are advised to speak with your child’s pediatrician. All in-school clinics will be closed to registration by end of business day on October 8th to allow our health room staff time to review and prepare the consents and make sure enough vaccine is ordered. If you wish to cancel your child’s appointment after October 8th, please call Joanne O'Keefe, RN in the Health room. If you have any questions, please call your school’s health room at 410-313-5555.
Measured Academic Progress (MAP)
Starting next week, students in grades 1-5 will take the Measured Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. The MAP window runs through October. The data from the MAP assessment will help schools and teachers measure your student’s academic progress. The MAP test does not affect grades and the difficulty adjusts depending on how your child responds. It is normal for students to only answer about half the questions correctly. To learn more about the MAP assessment, please visit: https://www.nwea.org/the-map-suite/common-questions-families/ Please make sure your child has headphones at school since they will be used for testing throughout the school year.
Gifted & Talented Program News
Reverse Engineering Instructional Seminar
Dear Families,
More than half of the 4th grade students have signed up to participate in the Reverse Engineering Instructional Seminar. Wow! Students will take apart objects to see how they work and discover the technology used inside.
If you have any items that you wouldn’t mind donating for our reverse engineering students, please send them in with your child. They can either bring them to my room or add them to the collection box in the front lobby area. Groups begin as early as next week and the collection will continue through the end of October.
Items do not need to be in working order, but they should be safe to disassemble, have a way to be taken apart (flat-head or Phillips-head screws - not star tip), and no larger than approximately a shoe box. Some suggested items are below:
Calculator
Clock/Watch
Alarm Clock/Radio
Television Remote Control
See and Say/Etch a Sketch Toys
Remote Control Cars or Other Cars with lights and sound
Pop Lights
Thank you in advance,
Jodi O’Connor
