Nutrition Advisory Council at District Elementary Schools

The students were separated into two groups (grades 1-3 and grades 4-6) and completed a questionairre about the food offerings in the district, and had the opportunity to comment on their food preferences on the current menu. The Council met with their principals: Mrs. Iacono, Dr. Masters and Dr. Cali, and the Kearny School District Pomptonian Food Service managers to discuss healthy options for our breakfast and lunch programs. The certificates symbolize their role as advocates for healthy living and ambassadors for positive change in the realm of student nutrition.

Kearny School District Celebrates Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week, also known as the Week of Respect, is an annual event that is celebrated in schools across the United States. The purpose of this week is to promote kindness, empathy, and inclusion among students, teachers, and staff members.
During this week, various activities were organized to help students understand the importance of respecting others. Theme days included "Me" Shirt Day, Feeling Safe and Comfortable Day, Person I Admire Day, Super Hero Day, and Peace Day, which allowed the students to show their commitment to being respectful and kind to others. Franklin School held a Pajama Day in an effort to "put bullying to bed." Schuyler School students wore orange in recognition of National Bullying month, and Roosevelt and Garfield Schools "chalked the walk" with positive messages, spreading kindness in big steps. Our elementary schools also organized assemblies where students learned about respect and tolerance. Washington School PTA sponsored an assembly featuring Omega Man, who taught the students the value of being a "dream maker, and not a dream breaker!" Mini lessons in all of the classrooms included group discussions where students talked about their experiences with bullying and how they can help prevent it. Special thanks to our administrators, counselors, faculty, and PTA for their creative theme days and commitment to making this week a true success.
Red Ribbon Week is an excellent opportunity for schools to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students. It helps to build a sense of community and promotes positive behaviors among students. By teaching students about respect and kindness, schools can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

Kearny High School Student Becomes Local Hero
Recently, KHS student Bruno Ribeiro was recognized for his selfless behavior and quick-thinking actions. While riding his scooter, he noticed an elderly couple in distress. A woman was trying to assist her husband into their vehicle, but they were both struggling. Without hesitation, the student put his scooter aside and assisted the couple in need. A resident reached out to KHS Principal Mr. Brack to commend his act of kindness. The actions of Bruno Ribeiro are a true reflection of kindness and empathy towards others, and embody the values and character developed by our Kearny students.
Kindness Matters at Roosevelt School
Roosevelt staff collected over 100 pairs of new pajamas and delivered them to Clara Maas Medical Center in November, as a part of the Kindness for Christopher Pajama Drive. The pajamas of varying sizes, styles and colors were given to children in the pediatric units, and inspired our Roosevelt family to spread kindness and give back to our local communities. Thank you to Mrs. Alessandra, Principal Moyano, and the Kindness for Christopher team for organizing a remarkable event.
Jr. PEERS Food Drive
The Junior Peers of Garfield School and Franklin School, along with PBSIS, hosted a food drive to donate to the Kearny Community Food Bank. The students collected over 1,200 cans of food and demonstrated true leadership skills through their commitment to volunteering. Special thanks to our principals and Jr. PEERS advisors for coordinating this community event.
Showing Appreciation for Our Military Heroes with Personalized Holiday Cards
This fall, students around the district created and sent holiday themed cards to our military heroes, a challenge proposed by the NJDOE. The goal of this challenge was to show an outpouring of gratitude, respect, and caring by creating as many personalized holiday greetings as possible for our United States troops, veterans, and service families. Personalized and signed cards reflect genuine support and caring, respect, and appreciation of our military heroes during the winter holiday season. The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) urges schools across the state to participate in this deserving initiative by creating holiday cards that will be forwarded to soldiers stationed overseas.

KHS Drama Club Presents "Terror in K-Town"
Kearny High School hallways were transformed into a horror show, as attendees were led on a haunting tour through the halls of Kearny High School, encountering terrifying scenes and spooky characters at every turn. The drama club actors did an excellent job of bringing the scares to life, with their convincing performances leaving many attendees trembling with fear.
In addition to the scary costumes and terrifying atmosphere, our community was frightfully entertained with a haunted maze, spooky stories, tarot readings, a haunted maze, raffles, and trick or treat stations! Terror in K-Town was a huge success, and certainly provided an unforgettable experience.

KHS Dental Assisting at Rutgers School of Dentistry
The Dental Assisting II students participated in the Rutgers School of Dentistry's Decision for Dentistry program on Thursday, November 2nd in Newark. On their first visit, the students were paired with junior and senior dental students who served as mentors and provided a tour of the dental school. Additionally, the students went to the pre-clinic where they took dental impressions on mannequins and poured the impressions in stone. Our students naturally excelled since they have had much hands-on experience here in our classroom with this very procedure.
