Hello April!
What an exciting first couple weeks of fourth quarter we have had! We had an AMAZING color dance brought to us by our PTA this past Friday! It was so much fun to see everyone dancing and having a great time! All of that was made possible by the fundraising efforts of our families from last year, dine-out success, and then the AMAZING organization of our parents who organized and carried out the event. Thank you Aimee and Daniel Harr, Beth Kirk, Candace Cates, Stephanie Carreon, Krystal Hagan, and Adrian Schoen!
This week 5th grade kicked off state assessments on Wednesday and Thursday completing their Science assessment. They were rockstars with such amazing focus and determination! This coming week 3rd-6th grade will complete their Reading Assessments on Tuesday (4/2) and Wednesday (4/3), the following week they will complete their Math Assessments on Tuesday (4/9) and Wednesday (4/10). Thank you for helping make sure your child(ren) get a good nights sleep and healthy breakfast during these times!
We also had a fun Royals spirit week and started a spare change drive, sponsored by StuCo. See the flyer below for additional information as it continues through next week! All proceeds will go straight back to Nieman students and families in supporting outstanding lunch balances. How thoughtful and caring are out Student Council representatives!
We are also finishing our spring fundraiser strong! We have this weekend left and then all money is due this coming Tuesday, April 2nd! See the PTA section below for additional details! A HUGE thank you to Sommer Saunders for her help in organizing and running our spring fundraiser- without this we would not be able to support our students and staff in the ways that we do throughout the year. These funds go to staff grants, which provide items like- recess equipment, additional materials for our specials teachers that go straight into the hands of your children, additional academic materials for teachers, and much more. The money also supports our school gift, the school dance, teacher appreciation items and much more!
Coming up in April we have PreK and Kindergarten Round Up and STEAM Night- see below for details!
Happy Ramadan and Easter for those who are celebrating during this time!

SMN Swim Clinic
My name is Cody Fothergill, the head Swim and Dive coach for the boys team here at North. On behalf of the boys and girls Swim & Dive programs at North, we are excited to again host a Swim and Dive Clinic for students in the North feeder schools! The clinic will be in just over a week, on Saturday, April 6th, 2024 at North’s pool in the afternoon.
This will be our 7th “Makin’ Waves” Clinic. Last year was a huge success with over 50 campers! We really enjoy having future Bison come for a couple hours and learn a few things in the pool, have a great time, and begin to feel a connection to North. The swim and dive teams at North have a long tradition of success and a strong community at North. Neither team ever cuts athletes at the beginning of the seasons, so we really can be a sport for anyone who has the desire to be a part of it.
As I did last spring, I am attaching a flyer that has details about the clinic as well as the Clinic Registration link (google form) listed here below:

Repeated but Important Information
If your child is going to be gone, please call the attendance line.
As a reminder, if your child is going to be absent please call the attendance line 913-993-4088 or email JennyMeacham@smsd.org and the classroom teacher letting them know. If we do not hear from you or are not able to contact you then it is considered an unexcused absence. Thank you!
Changes in Dismissal Routine
Student safety is of the upmost importance to us. Please know that frequent changes in dismissal routines causes safety concerns. We ask that you have a regular dismissal routine and communicate this with the classroom teacher at or before Sneak.
If a change has to occur the safest way to ensure the change is communicated is to email the classroom teacher BEFORE school starts and then ALSO call the office BEFORE 2pm. Teachers have different plan times and lunches, and they are not regularly able to read email. Any dismissal change received after 2pm is NOT GUARANTEED. We will do our best, but the end of the day is a very hectic time in a school. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the safety of your child.
STUDENT HANDBOOK
Our Shawnee Mission Student Handbook provides information on our philosophy of education, code of conduct and a of variety policies and procedures. Students and parents can read this handbook to better understand the behavior expectations of Nieman Elementary and also the Shawnee Mission School District.
Please note specifically the updated cell phone policy that was approved summer 2023:
- SMSD is committed to providing highly effective and consistent learning spaces across the district. During instructional time, the personal use of cell phones and other electronic devices that are not district-issued is prohibited unless explicitly directed by school staff. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices are to be turned off and put away during the day in order to respect the educational environment of the classroom. Medical exemptions may be applied. Initial violations will fall under the Discipline Matrix as a Level 1 offense. Subsequent violations will result in progressive disciplinary action.
