Operational Audit of Milwaukee Public Schools Released by Governor's Office
Report provides guidance to continue to support MPS students and provides another tool to assist with the district's work
On Thursday, February 13th, the Governor's Office released the operational audit of Milwaukee Public Schools conducted by MGT Consulting Firm.
President Herndon expressed gratitude for the insights that the report provides. She said, "The MPS Board of Directors is grateful for MGT's efforts and the Governor's support in creating this report. It will be a valuable tool as we embark on this new era of leadership for Milwaukee Public Schools."
The report validates the progress we are making while also serving as a guide for continued improvements. It highlights the strength of our existing systems and the dedication behind key initiatives, reinforcing the steps we have taken to move our students forward. At the same time, it identifies areas for growth, reaffirming our commitment to continuous improvement.
While acknowledging the need for focused support, the report makes clear that we have an opportunity to build on this momentum, strengthening our schools and communities while creating a more unified path forward.
Most importantly, this report represents a true collective effort; one that underscores our commitment to transparency, accountability, and the future of our city. We appreciate the collaboration of all stakeholders involved in this process and remain dedicated to driving meaningful progress on behalf of Milwaukee's students. We want to move our students and city forward, collectively.
Milwaukee Public Schools Board Selects Dr.
Brenda Cassellius to be Next Superintendent
Contract Negotiations Under Way
Following an extensive search that included more than 50 applicants, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors has announced their choice for the next superintendent. The district extended the offer to Dr. Brenda Cassellius, former superintendent of Boston Public Schools, who accepted the invitation to enter into contract negotiations with the district.
All three of the finalist candidates spent time in the district on February 6 and 7, meeting with students, staff, families, and community members. Community members shared feedback, and the board made its final decision in a Special Meeting of the Board on Tuesday night.
The Board looks forward to welcoming Dr. Cassellius to Milwaukee.
More information about all of the candidates can be found on the Superintendent Search page on the MPS website. More details about the superintendent transition will be shared in the coming weeks.
Update on Lead Hazards Found
at Golda Meir Campus
The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) conducted a follow-up lead hazard assessment last week at Golda Meir Lower Campus to evaluate ongoing remediation efforts.
Given the concerns about ongoing student safety, MHD performed an interim re-check of Golda Meir Lower Campus.
During this reassessment, 12 surface wipe samples were collected. MHD and MPS are pleased to see significant progress has been made in addressing the majority of previously identified lead hazards.
Upon analyzing the samples taken, two did not pass lead safety standards. The two failing samples were obtained from the floors in the school kitchen and one of the bathrooms. MPS is currently creating a plan in consultation with MHD to address the two areas that failed and ensure they are up to standards by the time students return to school on Wednesday, February 19. MHD is confident MPS will be able to achieve full clearance by the completion of the health order on Thursday, February 20.
Reminder: MPS Safe Haven Policies Remain in Effect for Students and Families
In light of recent changes to immigration policies, we want to reassure all our families that Milwaukee Public Schools remains steadfast in our commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for every student. We will maintain and enforce our current policies and procedures to actively protect the rights and well-being of our students, staff, and their families.
Our key policies include:
Safe Haven Resolution: All district locations are safe spaces for students and families of any immigration status. ICE agents will not be allowed access without a valid warrant.
Non-Discrimination Policy: We do not inquire about the immigration status of our students or their families.
Training for Staff: Our administrators receive training on handling potential ICE visits and interactions with federal immigration officials.
Support Services: We offer support services, including access to school counselors and administrators, for families affected by immigration enforcement actions.
Our priority is to ensure that all students feel secure and can focus on their education. For more information on our policies and support services, please visit our website.
Together, we can navigate these challenging times and continue to support our community.
