The IMS Connection
Volume 22, Issue 7: March 2025
March 2025
Greetings Islip Middle School Families,
It's wonderful to see the hints of Spring all around us. We will make every effort to spend time outside upon arrival and at recess so encourage your children to be dressed appropriately.
At this time, we are preparing for next year. There is still plenty of time for students to be successful. Extra help is offered at least twice a week by every teacher and counselor. Contacting your child’s teacher is the best way to get an exact schedule.
As we prepare for the 4th and final quarter, this is an excellent time to log on to the parent portal to check the accomplishments of your children. Any questions you have, please reach out to your child's teacher, counselor, or me and we will gladly assist with your requests.
Remember to Look Good, Feel Good, and Do Good as you stay healthy and well.
As always, feel free to contact me at tmartin@islipufsd.org.

March 2025
Welcome to Spring here at IMS!
I hope that you and your family are well and looking forward to the beginning of Spring!
As we progress through the year, we are constantly meeting with students and discussing the importance of empathy, compassion, respect, and kindness. We understand that middle school is a time when students are finding themselves and that occasionally students will struggle. We want to remind you that we have support in place for students when they are struggling. Our support staff, including our guidance counselors, social workers, and school psychologist, are available to students in need of help in addition to our administration, who welcome students with any concerns or questions they may have.
As we progress into the third marking period, please remember to check the Infinite Campus portal regularly to monitor your child’s academic progress and attendance. Teachers and teams are available to discuss any concerns you may have. You can reach out via Parent Square to ask questions or schedule an appointment to meet on the phone or in person.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to a wonderful remainder to the school year.

March 2025
As it is a stressful time of the year, especially as 6th grade students start taking midterms for the first time. Ms. Garren entered the classrooms with a lesson called, “Beat the Stress: Your Toolkit to Success”. This lesson aimed to help students understand stress, recognize its effects, and develop healthy coping strategies. The students used an interactive activity with their own toolkit and even practiced some mindfulness meditation!
The scheduling process is in the midst of its timeline. 6th grade students have submitted their language selection and have been enrolled in either Spanish or Italian. 8th grade students have submitted their course selection pink slips; after choosing the classes they wish to take entering high school. The due date has passed to hand these in, if you have not taken the time to review your child’s courses, please take the time to do so. These courses are selected carefully to ensure these align with their strengths and abilities. Parental involvement is crucial during this process as they begin their pathway to graduating high school in the future.
All 8th grade students and parents are encouraged to attend Islip High School’s Curriculum Night on March 25th. This event is a fantastic opportunity to explore the variety of courses and programs available to high school students.
And don’t forget to sport your college gear on College Day! Students are encouraged to wear their college gear to school on Friday, March 28th!
Exploring the World Through Digital Geography
At Islip Middle School, Digital Geography is more than just maps and landmarks—it's about understanding the world while developing essential digital skills! In this class, students explore both United States and World Geography while preparing for the digital world we live in today. From using online tools for research to organizing information in Google applications, students are learning how geography and technology go hand in hand.
This month, our Digital Geography students are taking on an exciting challenge—the Asian City Travel Guide Project! Each student will select a major city in Asia and plan a full 7-day trip, from flights and hotels to meals and must-see attractions. But there's a twist! Every student will be given a specific budget to stick to, making smart spending decisions along the way. Using Google Sheets, they'll track their expenses, learn to apply basic formulas, and see how budgeting plays a role in real-world travel.
By the end of the project, students will create a Google Slides presentation showcasing their dream trip while demonstrating their ability to research, plan, and manage finances—valuable skills for both geography and beyond! Stay tuned for highlights from our student-created travel guides.
March is here, and Team 8 Green is diving into a variety of exciting topics across all subjects!
In math, students are sharpening their problem-solving skills as they explore arithmetic and geometric sequences.
Spanish classes are focusing on a unit that teaches the practical skill of packing for a vacation, blending language learning with real-world application. They are also participating in March Music Madness, where they discover music and musicians from Spanish-speaking countries.
General science students are exploring the fascinating world of genetics, uncovering the mysteries of heredity and DNA that shape all living things.
Earth science students are studying the atmosphere, analyzing weather patterns, and discussing the impact of climate change on our planet.
In English Language Arts (ELA), students are reading stories from different countries and backgrounds as part of the "Culture and Belonging" unit. Through literature, they are gaining insight into new cultures and exploring new perspectives.
Social studies classes are learning the history of the Great Depression while also looking ahead to an exciting field trip to Washington, D.C., where students will experience history firsthand in our nation’s capital.
Team 8 Green remains committed to engaging and meaningful learning experiences, and we can't wait to see our students continue to grow in the months ahead!
