Placement Test Summary Spring 2022
Please double check placement testing information on the Testing Services webpage: https://testing.uga.edu/content_page/placement-tests. The summary below comes from this page.
All placement testing is back in-person except placement testing for English, French, Spanish, and Hebrew, which plan to continue using Respondus Monitor through ELC so that students can take placement tests before they’re physically on campus. The DMAT (paper-based math test) is currently being offered through UTS.
For Students: Exams in Respondus Monitor
If your placement exam will utilize ELC and Respondus Monitor, before your testing date, please make sure that your computer’s microphone and webcam are working. If you are unsure if your computer or environment meet the requirements, please email uts@uga.edu at least 24 hours before your testing time so that we can help you troubleshoot.
If this is your first time using ELC, you may want to look through UGA’s Guide to ELC Quizzes. The basic instructions to get to your test are:
- Go to elc.uga.edu
- Choose the University Testing Services course
- Locate the Tools dropdown menu and go to Quizzes
- Navigate to the exam you need. A password will be provided before test day
- The instructions will prompt you to download Respondus Lockdown Browser. Please do so, then use your original browser to navigate back to the test page. Now, you will be able to follow the Respondus Monitor prompts to ready your space and take your exam. Please have an ID card ready. No other materials are allowed. To avoid issues with Respondus Monitor, please:
- Clear your testing surface of all materials
- Avoid wearing baseball caps or hats that extend beyond the forehead
- If using a notebook computer, place it on a firm surface like a desk or table, not your lap.
- If the webcam is built into the screen, avoid making screen adjustments after the exam starts. A common mistake is to push the screen back, resulting in only the top portion of the face being recorded.
- Don't lie down on a couch or bed while taking an exam. There is a greater chance you'll move out of the video frame or change your relative position to the webcam.
- Don't take an exam in a dark room. If the details of your face don't show clearly during the webcam check, the automated video analysis is more likely to flag you as missing.
- Avoid backlighting situations, such as sitting with your back to a window. The general rule is to have light in front of your face, not behind your head.
- Select a distraction-free environment for the exam. Televisions and other people in the room can draw your attention away from the screen. Other people that come into view of the webcam may also trigger flags by the automated system.
Please take your placement exam at the date and time you registered for. If you need to reschedule your exam, please contact us prior to your exam time to do so. If you miss your test time, your seat will be forfeited and you’ll have to register and pay for another appointment.
We have created a practice quiz so that you can have experience with Respondus Monitor before your placement exam. It will be available to you as soon as you are added to ELC. Students are added to the ELC testing course the evening before their exams. If you have questions or run into issues, please email uts@uga.edu.

MATH Spring 2022 Updates
MATH 1113 (Precalculus) POD Sections
· Math is no longer offering intensive precal.
MATH Placement Exam Information
See placement test information above
Important information for advisors:
You will not be allowed to register for the DMAT if you are currently registered for Math 1101 or Math 1113 at UGA. (In particular, you cannot withdraw from the course once it's begun and then take the exam.)
If a student registers for MATH prior to the beginning of classes and prior to taking the placement exam, they can always pull up Athena on their phone, drop the course, and then they will be allowed to take the exam. They can then register again, if needed, once their scores are processed. This would only work BEFORE classes start.
A student who has attempted MATH 1101 or MATH 1113 at UGA, but failed or withdrawn, may not take the math placement exam.
Transfer Students and Placement: https://www.math.uga.edu/transfer-credit
If a student has transferred in a MATH credit from another institution, can they take the placement exam?
If a student has transfer credit for 1101, they cannot take the exam.
If they have transfer credit for 1113, 2200, 2110, 2250, or 2260 they don’t need to take the placement exam.
If they have transfer credit for MATH 1060, 1TXX or 1GXX or 2TXX (but not any of the courses listed above) then they can take the placement exam.
If they have another transfer MATH credit, they should contact the math department for further instructions.
If a student has enrolled in (but failed or withdrawn from) a MATH class at another institution, can they take the math placement exam?
If the class they attempted transfers as 1101, 1113, or a calculus sequence course (2200, 2250, 2260) then they do not need the math placement exam.
If the class they attempted transfers as 1GXX, 1TXX, or 2TXX, they can take the math placement exam.
If the class they attempted transfers as something else the student should contact the math department for further instructions.
If a student registered for a math class at another institution but didn’t enroll (that is, the class doesn’t appear on the transcript at all), they can take the math placement exam
In practice since the department has no way to verify registrations outside of UGA.
Additional Placement Testing Information
- Students self-report math credits on the University Testing Services intake form. Academic Honesty policies apply. Additional verification methods may be implemented in the future.
- Students may not retake the math placement exam.
ALEKS Information
- Math is no longer using ALEKS to award course Exemptions. They are only using it for the purpose of placement into calculus.
Chemistry Transfer and Placement Info
The Chemistry Department website for FAQs (Chrome works better than Explorer for viewing this page):
Transferring General Chemistry from USG Schools
The courses will transfer in as CHEM 1211+L or 1212+L if their course numbers at the systems schools are 1211+L or 1212+L.
Courses must be 3 hours lecture 1 hour lab to counts as 1211+L or 1212+L here at UGA.
Face to face or online instruction are eligible for transfer and core inclusion. (NOTE: During the pandemic online course transfers are allowed. This will change after pandemic restrictions are lifted. Refer questions to Dr. Ellenberger.)(Suzanne.Ellenberger@uga.edu)
To assist with the most accurate course registration for students, advisors should recommend that any student who transfers in one or both of these courses to use as a prerequisite for other Chemistry courses take the Chemistry Diagnostic test. Questions about the test can be directed to Dr. Ellenberger. (Suzanne.Ellenberger@uga.edu)
Transferring Organic Chemistry from USG Schools
The courses will transfer in as CHEM 2211+L or 2212+L if their course numbers at the system schools are 2211+L or 2212+L
Courses must be 3 hours lecture 1 hour lab to be counted as 2211+L or 2212+L credit.
During the time of the pandemic, online OR face to face instruction is eligible to be used as CHEM 2211+L or 2212+L equivalents.
To assist with the most accurate course registration for students, advisors should recommend that any student who transfers in one or both of these courses to use as a prerequisite for other Chemistry courses take the Chemistry Diagnostic test.
Other Chemistry Courses from USG Schools
Any Chemistry course taken in area II of the core at a USG institution, but not equivalent to general or organic chemistry (as stated above) will come in with a GXX designation and should be used in area II of the core here.
Note that GXX courses cannot be used as prerequisites to subsequent Chemistry courses. Students who need GXX courses to count as CHEM 1211+L, 1212+L, 2211+L or 2212+L must take the ACS test.
Any Transfer Chemistry Course (General, Organic, or Other) from Non-System Schools
All non-system school courses will come in as GXX (rather than TXX) so that they can automatically fulfill a core physical science requirement for non-majors.
Only students from non-system schools needing to go on in Chemistry and therefore wanting to use their transfer course(s) as prerequisite credit have to take the ACS exam.
For upper division/advanced Chemistry courses evaluations, student/advisors should contact Dr. Tina Slaguero salguero@uga.edu.
ACS Exam Information
Any student needing the ACS exam should contact Dr. Ellenberger (Suzanne.Ellenberger@uga.edu) . She will get the student to the right place depending on the test they need, and will help them schedule the exams.
Students who have ACS exam credit from their previous institution should email Dr. Ellenberger with their name, 81 , form # of the ACS test taken, # of questions on the test, and raw score.
Students needing 1211+L AND 1212+L credit from non-system schools can take one ACS test that encompasses both classes. If they fail (below 50%) then they will be given JUST the ACS for the first semester to determine placement
OCHEM has a similar ACS test structure. Students can either take the test for the full year or can take one for the first semester of OCHEM.
A practice ACS exam exists online
UGA students also must take the ACS as their CHEM 1212 final. They are held to the same standards for passing as transfer students.
Currently, the General Chemistry ACS is online and proctored via Zoom by Renea. If students are unable to find a time immediately to take the test, Renae will give a conditional override, but the student MUST take the ACS by the end of the add/drop period or they will be dropped from their CHEM course.
OCHEM does not have an online ACS. Students needing OCHEM ACS must do it in person. The OCHEM ACS is offered on an as-needed basis.
Overrides
Students from system schools who have evidence that they earned a grade in a Chemistry course that is a pre-requisite to a course they need at UGA, but whose transcript has not arrived or been posted at UGA, can email a screen shot of their transcript to chemreg@uga.edu. This screen shot must contain the student’s name, institution where course was taken, course # and grade in the course. Please advise them to be patient in waiting for a response.
If the student is not from a USG institution, they can ask their professor at their current institution to send a copy of their ACS test score to Dr. Ellenberger or to chemreg if they took the ACS.
If they did not take the ACS at their transfer institution, then they will need to take it at UGA to get any overrides.
FYOS Information
This is a reminder that all incoming first-year students are required to take a First-Year Odyssey Seminar. This includes:
Students who were dual enrolled in high school
- First-year students who are accepted for admission in the spring term. Even though these students may have taken a seminar at another institution, they are required to take an FYOS.

Foreign Language Placement, Course Evaluations, and Course Overrides
French, German, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese
- If an advisor encounters an native or heritage speaker of Spanish, they can contact Dr. Alicia Arribas at Spanish@uga.edu for help with accurate placement in Spanish courses.
- If a student took more than 2 years of French, Latin, or Spanish in high school, they should try the placement test to see the most appropriate starting point and perhaps earn credit. Credit is never awarded for 1001.
- Students with high-school study of German should take the German placement exam. For questions about placement, contact Dr. Katie Chapman katieec@uga.edu.
Credits for 1002, 2001, and 2002 earned through departmental placement tests cannot count in Area IV World Languages and Culture.
FREN, GRMN, and SPAN offer 1110 (two semesters worth of material covered in one semester).
FREN and SPAN students continuing with their high school language should be advised to take 1110 or higher unless it has been more than 4 yrs since they took high school SPAN or FREN.
PORT also offers a PORT 1110. Students who have taken any Romance Language in high school are welcome.
Students needing overrides in any of the Romance Languages (SPAN, PORT, FREN, ITAL) can contact Kate Daley-Bailey at kdaley@uga.edu . As always, they should send their name and 81 number and a detailed description of what they are asking for.
Students who take the GRMN placement will typically be placed in either GRMN 1001 or 1110; they have the option of talking to Dr. Katie Chapman to change their placement. Her email is katieec@uga.edu
