What's Up at Washington Square

Live Fire
Students who complete both years of Washington Square’s Firefighting program have the opportunity to complete a live fire experience. This year’s students battled the blazes during various dates in April.
The two-year Firefighting program teaches students critical skills in the industry to pursue a career in the field, and gauge if it is going to be their future choice. The chance to take on a live fire is thanks to North Metro Fire Rescue District. Students get to use the skills and knowledge they have learned at the North Metro Fire Training Center, as actual flames, intense heat, and standing water provide an authentic learning experience. All of the drills, scenarios, and physical training that takes place in the halls at Washington Square pays off as students tackle blazing rooms and rolling fire.

Student Highlights
Firefighting - Chloe Merry
Chloe is a junior at Stargate High School.
Chloe is concluding her journey in the Firefighting program at FutureForward at Washington Square, where she has distinguished herself as a leader and an invaluable asset to both the program and her peers. When asked if she thought firefighting was the career path for her, Chloe confidently affirmed her passion for the field without hesitation. She explained that while both her parents hold desk jobs, she sought a profession rooted in public service, driven by her desire to assist others. She talked about how engaging the course has been with its hands-on learning, and loves the camaraderie and teamwork it fosters.
Chloe plans to return to Washington Square as a senior for the Emergency Medical Technician course, positioning herself for a promising career in the fire service. With aspirations to specialize in structural fires or wildland firefighting, Chloe's dedication and determination assures she will elevate any department she joins. When questioned about her initial attraction to firefighting, Chloe simply stated, "Fire made sense" — a sentiment echoed by her selection as the Student Highlight.
Congratulations, Chloe, for being one of May’s Student Highlights!
English - Sarah Craib
Tenacity, a positive attitude, and an inventive nature have made Sarah Craib the Student Highlight for English.
Sarah is a senior at Legacy High School, and is enrolled in English Composition I and II, Welding, and Crime Scene Investigation at FutureForward at Washington Square.
Mrs. Angela Seyfried, who teaches the concurrent enrollment course, said she chose Sarah because of the incredible effort and dedication she applies to assignments in class, even when they are challenging.
“Sarah could enter any college writing class today and earn a top grade,” Mrs. Seyfried said. “For example, when she had more to add to a class discussion, she stayed after school talking about it with me. That conversation became the basis of a follow-up discussion in our class. This is one example of how Sarah deepens her knowledge, and also the learning of others.”
Sarah said she enjoys attending English Composition because of the atmosphere and structure of assignments, and also appreciates discussions with her instructor and peers. Sarah excelled on her recent final exam, where she had to write about a topic from three perspectives. Earlier this year, she also scored top grades on her visual argument project, and This I Believe essay and presentation.
“We shared our life stories to each other, and the conversations echo with wisdom,” Sarah said of the presentations. “Whether it be the circle-ups at the front where we get to debrief, or the open-ended assignments, I am always safe and confident in this class.”
The theme of English Composition II is empathy, and Mrs. Seyfried said Sarah shows that for all of her classmates.
“She is the first to lend a hand to someone in need,” Mrs. Seyfried said. ” Sarah shows a lot of character and integrity each day.”
“This class illustrates a vibrant candle in a dark room,” Sarah said. “Walking in, I immediately get a warm vibe, and I know Ms. Seyfried always has my back no matter the situation. She’s the teacher you go to when you’re not having a great day, and she knows what to say when you need it. ”
Sarah will attend Front Range Community College this fall to pursue a career in geosciences.
Congratulations, Sarah, for being one of May’s Student Highlights!
