Notes from the Smith School Library

For those of you who are new here, my name is Hope Morrison and I am the librarian at Smith School. This is my eighteenth year as a school librarian; I was an elementary librarian for eleven years in Illinois before moving to Montana in 2017. Since arriving in Helena, I have worked in the libraries at Helena Middle School, Helena High School, Hawthorne, and Smith. I am thrilled to be back in the Smith Library and looking forward to a fantastic year!

My library philosophy is very simple. In the library, we become critical thinkers, skillful researchers, and enthusiastic readers. Your student will spend one hour in the library each week; thirty minutes for skills and thirty minutes for checkout/silent reading. Our units of student range from learning about authors and illustrators to digital citizenship to using databases for research. I will send home a newsletter each trimester that provides detailed information on our studies; in the meantime, be sure to check in with your kids and see what they are doing in the library each week!

I have included a copy of the library schedule below. Please make note of when your student's class has library checkout (indicated as CO) and help him/her to remember to bring back books on those days.
