Did You Know?
Start this school year off on the right foot by setting attendance expectations.
Did you know? According to the IL School Report Card, 28.3% of students were chronically absent from school in 2023. But attendance matters!
According to attendanceworks.org, when students improve attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects. One study found that increased attendance led to significantly higher rates of students being on track (making adequate progress).
Furthermore, attendance markers in middle school correlate with the likelihood that a child will complete high school. Although sometimes outside factors impact our ability to prioritize attendance, we should consider ways to increase our student attendance in a supportive way.
Here are some ways in which we can improve attendance in our schools:
- Ensure all parents and guardians are informed about the research. One way to do this is to create strong bonds and relationships with our families. Teachers can also set an expectation for attendance at early school events such as open houses. Be aware, however, that some students have health impairments or other valid reasons for absences.
- Set attendance goals with families. Here is an option for an initial attendance plan.
- If possible, provide families with supports such as extracurricular programs to help them achieve these goals.
