Message from Mrs. Fassbender
We are now entering into October and have fully settled into our daily routines as a school. This week we are starting our Reading Readiness screeners with students in 4k-2. We are assessing the foundational skills of our students in order to determine their area of strengths and areas of growth. We will be sharing these results with you during our Parent-Teacher Conferences the week of October 14. Your child's teacher will be sending information about how to sign up for this in person or google meet conference.
One of my goals this year is to continue to reach out to families. I will be continuing our "Shooting Stars." Each day I pick 3-4 students to come to my office. I take a picture of them, find out things that they like about school, and they get to choose one parent to make a phone call home. Students in first grade through second grade get to sit in one of my principal chairs for the whole day as well! It has been great to connect with so many different students and parents and I look forward to continuing this all year!
Please know that I am here for your child, this staff, and this school. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to call or email me. Together we will make this an incredible year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amy Fassbender
How can I help my child at home?
Here are some tips for homework for families and students:
Time: The National Education Association (NEA) recommends the "10-minute rule", which states that students should spend about 10 minutes on homework per grade level each night. For example, a third grader would typically finish in about 30 minutes.
Purpose: Homework should be linked to classroom work and make its purpose clear to students. For example, homework can be assigned to increase knowledge or develop fluency in a specific area.
Time Management: Set a regular time for doing homework, and avoid doing it right before bedtime when students are tired and easily distracted.
Help: If a child is struggling with homework, parents can:
- Take a break if they are already stressed or frustrated
- Talk to the child to understand where they are stuck
- Offer guidance or hints to help them move forward
- Avoid doing their homework or giving them the answers
Collaborate with the Teacher: Parents can always ask the teacher for strategies to support homework completion or possible accommodations that may be needed.
Set Up a Homework-Friendly Area: Parents can create a space that is conducive to homework.
Too much homework can be detrimental to students' mental and physical health. It can lead to increased stress, anxiety, sleep deprivation, and other health problems. We always try to balance that with still providing opportunities for your child to learn and grow. Thank you for partnering with us!

Primary School Updates
ACT 20 Updates
The School District of Lodi is dedicated to providing every student with the reading and literacy skills they need to thrive. The following webpage will be updated throughout the school year and outlines how the district is implementing the recent requirements of 2023 Act 20 (WI Reading Act). A key part of this new legislative requirement focuses on early literacy screening (4K-3), which is currently underway.
ALICE Drill
At school we practice EVERYTHING! We practice math facts, how to line up to wash our hands, procedures for science experiments, where classes need to be when we line up outside before lunch, the way to walk in the hallway, how we act when riding the bus, and so forth. We also practice how to keep our students and staff safe. We practice what to do if there were to be a tornado or a fire, what to do if an intruder were to come into the school, or what to do when there is another urgent safety situation.
Here is more information about our ALICE drills. Fall 2024 Letter - Fall 2024 Letter Spanish
Halloween Parade - Thursday, October 31 at 8:15 am
Families are invited to join the outdoor Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 31 at 8:15 am.
The parade will begin with our kindergarteners, then second graders, and conclude with first graders.
Families can stand on the edge of the playground and on the edge of the front sidewalk.
We will be going into the classrooms to return to our normal schedule following the parade, so we ask that you take pictures outside when you see your child.
Students who wish to participate must be dressed in appropriate costumes, costumes that are creative, costumes that are in good taste, costumes that do not hurt or bring embarrassment to the school, parents or the student. The parent is responsible for knowing whether something is appropriate or not. Another great option would be to have students dress to show their Lodi Pride if you do not have a costume. We expect to have lots of fun, but we also want to communicate some guidelines for costumes.
We need to be able to identify students.
Costumes may not promote violence, have accessories, or props that could be used as a weapon. (No fake weapons such as water pistols, knives or swords.)
Costumes must be school appropriate.
You must be able to sit, walk, breathe, see, and hear.
Students need to come to school wearing their costumes.
They will need to have clothes they can wear the rest of the day under their costume. For this reason, please do not do full face painting/make-up.
Herb Kohl Fellowship - Consider Nominating a Staff Member Today!
Each year the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation provides an opportunity for students, parents, or other teachers and community members to nominate a teacher for the Herb Kohl Fellowship. This program recognizes and supports teaching excellence and innovation in the state of Wisconsin. The goal is to support Wisconsin teachers in the pursuit of their unrealized goals for their classrooms or professional development. The 100 Herb Kohl Fellowship recipients and the 100 Wisconsin schools of those teachers will each receive a $6,000 grant. We encourage you to consider submitting a nomination by clicking on this link.
High School Teaching Assistants
Each year we have the privilege of having some High School students act as teaching assistants at the Primary. Below are the students that are volunteering in our school!

Growing together: A time to plant, and a time to harvest at the School Forest - Paula Tonn (School District of Lodi Library Media Specialist & School Forest Committee member)
Much excitement has been growing surrounding the revitalization of outdoor learning and increased use of Lodi’s School Forest, located on County Road J near Smokey Hollow Campground. Over 600 of our kids grades 4K-12 visited the outdoor classroom last year to build their academic skills while immersed in nature. The School Forest committee of teachers, administrators, and community members remains committed to the long term goal of each School District of Lodi student visiting the Lodi School Forest every year for outdoor learning. Plans for curricular adaptations, teacher training, and infrastructural and accessibility developments are being outlined and intentionally implemented to further improve outdoor learning opportunities for Lodi’s students.
Of the many aspects of stewardship of the school forest, ecosystem health is a primary concern. Hand-planted by students in the 1960s and 70s, the red pine stands are now ready for harvest. The School District of Lodi is working with DNR foresters and professional loggers to selectively cut timber. Students have also been actively involved in this process, learning by doing, in tree selection and invasive species removal.
In the long-term, harvesting is an important step in making way for new generations of trees, and ridding the area of invasive species and disease. In the short-term — well–– it might look a little ugly. Luckily, forests are resilient and regenerative plant communities that require this sort of maintenance to thrive and endure. Leo Olson, LHS Science Teacher and School Forest Coordinator says, “We’re excited to continue the legacy of sustainable forestry in Lodi as a learning opportunity for our students. Acting as responsible stewards of the land is a part of our civic commitment to caring for our School District’s amazing resources.”
For more info about the School Forest and our work to restore it, visit The School District of Lodi Forest Website.
Word of the Week
NEW this year! In the daily announcements we are teaching our students different vocabulary words. They learn the definition of the word, hear this in a sentence, see a picture to help with the meaning of the word, and then are encouraged to use this word. Attached are the words of the week we have had so far this year. We encourage families to use these words with their children at home too!
Messages from Primary School Staff
Mrs. Val Bilkey - School Counselor
Hello Everyone, for those of you who do not know me, my name is Val Bilkey. I am the school counselor for the Lodi Primary School. I am available to meet with you and/or your children if you have any behavioral, social and/or emotional concerns.
I am in each classroom once every 6 days teaching social and emotional lessons. Recently in SEL we learned about the Zones of Regulation to help kids learn about identifying how they are feeling and choosing tools to help them control their big feelings. There will be additional lessons throughout the year that help kids learn more about emotional regulation. Our classroom teachers will also continue to use the Zones of Regulation as part of their days here at school.
Here are some resources that outline some emotional regulation strategies.
- You can use Zones of Regulation to help your kids talk about how they are feeling and identify when they may need to use some strategies to better regulate themselves.
- A few breathing techniques to help bring awareness to your breath.
- Other regulation strategies ideas to try out.
Also in October we will be talking about solving problems. Kids will learn the difference between big problems and small problems. They will know that for big problems they need to talk to an adult. For small problems they can work on solving them on their own using Kelso’s Choices.
In other SEL news October is bully prevention and awareness month. Behavior crosses the line from unkind to bullying when it is: ongoing, coercive or involves a power imbalance and is one-sided.
What we can do to help prevent bullying:
Modeling kindness towards everyone, even people we may not get along with. Kids learn by watching how adults talk about and interact with others.
Encourage children to ALWAYS treat others with kindness and respect.
Teach kids what to do if someone is not being kind. Teach them how to be assertive, use a strong voice to say “no”, “stop” and “that is not nice” when they see someone who is being unkind.
Most importantly encourage and model empathy. Think about how others are feeling, specifically think about how our words and actions make others feel. We want to be that person to build up everyone around us.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if there is any way that I can help you or your child.

Mrs. Sue Chambers - Reading Specialist
One of the areas that we focus on in Literacy is "fluency." The National Reading Panel defines fluency as the ability to read text with accuracy, appropriate rate, and good expression.
How can you help your child at home? Student–adult Reading *
In student–adult reading, the student reads one-on-one with an adult. The adult reads the text first, providing the student with a model of fluent reading. Then the student reads the same passage to the adult with the adult providing assistance and encouragement. The student rereads the passage until the reading is quite fluent. This should take approximately three to four re-readings. Re-readings may occur across multiple days.

Ms. Amy Good - Library Teacher
Hello from the Primary School Library! It has been a joy to welcome everyone back to the library! The kids are having fun checking out books, and it’s what we love to see! I’m Ms. Good, the librarian at the primary school, OSC, and the elementary school. Miss Jen is the library assistant and helps classes with their book checkouts, among many other things!
We’ve ordered many new books and it’s been exciting getting them out for everyone!
4K students checkout one book at a time and return them weekly.
K-2 students can keep their books for up to 10 school days, but please encourage them to return them when they’re done reading them.
Kindergarten gets one book at each checkout, 2 books total (and, later in the year, they will get to check out two books each checkout, 4 books total)
First and Second graders get to check out three books each check out, if they’d like, as long as they don’t have any overdue books, and 6 total.
We don’t stamp the due dates in the books, as the kids are usually done with them by their next checkout and do a great job of returning them. Additionally, Miss Jen reminds them at every checkout what books they still have checked out and when they are due.
How can you help your child at home?
We have had a few lessons this year, read some great books, and have quickly gotten into the swing of things. A few topics we’ve learned about or reviewed are:
Expected library behaviors in the library: Ask your child what to do when they hear the chime.
How to take care of the library books, including choosing a specific spot at home to keep them, even if it’s in a backpack: Ask your child to name a few things to keep library books away from.
Where to return books: Ask your child if they can tell you two different places to return their library books.
Feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions at goodamy@lodischoolswi.org.
Happy reading,
Ms. Good
Ms. Tekla Nimmow - Art Teacher
We have been working hard on our Square1 Art projects in the art room! If you are unfamiliar with Square1 art, it is a fundraiser the art department uses to raise money for supplies like clay, glaze, paint, brushes and more! Each student creates a piece of art which can be turned into water bottles, stickers, mugs, etc. The projects are looking great and we can't wait to share them with you! I will have more information on ordering these things next month, so keep an eye out!
How can you help your child at home? Ask them what their Square1 Art project is and what supplies they used to make it.
Mr. Garet Sagami - Physical Education Teacher
Students in PE class are learning the rules and expectations within the classroom. They have been working hard learning where their home base spots are in the gym, understanding the importance of rules and expected behaviors, bathroom and drink breaks, and having good sportsmanship inside and outside of the classroom.
Our first unit we are working on is Teamwork and Cooperation! We have been learning new games and activities that show us the importance and why we learn about it. One activity that students really enjoy is Cross the Toxic River, where they have to work as a team to get from one side of the river to the other using different types of equipment along with lots of teamwork.
How can you help your child at home?
- Go over what cooperation is.
- What is teamwork and what does it look like in and outside of the classroom?
- What are ways we can show others what teamwork and cooperation look like?
Mrs. Janelle Sivam - School Nurse
Pertussis (whooping cough):
It’s hard to believe that we are heading into October already. October is a good time to keep up with the flu vaccine to help reduce the severity and spread of illness. With that, this fall we received notification around the state and from Columbia County Public Health about multiple pertussis cases. I am including the letter that was sent out to families on 9/27/24 but wanted to share it again. We are following the guidelines from Public Health and our Medical Advisor. If your child would experience pertussis-like symptoms (listed in letter) then we asked your child to be evaluated by your provider and a letter from your provider of when your child can return to school. You may have to fax it to the school or drop it off when your child returns. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and help in reducing the spread of illness in our schools. Illness Prevention:
Please keep students home if they are ill. Reducing the spread can help to keep students engaged and ready to learn in the classroom. CDC link is prevention action tips to help to protect your family.

Immunizations:
If you have received paperwork in the mail this two weeks then please review, sign, and return to school by October 11th. If any families are interested in vaccinating this month then Columbia County Health is great resources to use that can assist in helping to get your family vaccinated. Please to them or myself if you have any questions.

Ice Age Trail Campus Designation Celebration
On Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, the School District of Lodi and the Ice Age Trail Alliance will celebrate the district’s designation as an Ice Age Trail Campus. The School District of Lodi is the first K-12 district to receive this designation. The celebration will run from 4 pm - 6pm highlighted by a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held at 4:30 pm behind Lodi High School to celebrate the new addition of the Ice Age Trail. This new segment will connect the City of Lodi Segment of the trail with a new trail extending from the high school bridge to Industrial Drive. As part of the celebration, there will be self guided trail walks and informational booths inside the Lodi High School Commons.
Of special note is that the new section of trail is the only segment of the Ice Age Trail that was completely student-built in Wisconsin. We will be honoring the work done by students in the School District of Lodi, along with the numerous community clubs and volunteers that have made this partnership between the Ice Age Trail Alliance and the School District of Lodi possible. We hope to see you there!
