UEN Homeroom - Hope Street Group and Utah Teacher Fellows

In the season finale of UEN Homerooom, Dani and Matt are joined by Tabitha Pacheco, Director of Utah Teacher Fellows and CEO of Hope Street Group, David Ma. First, they share how their mission to empower individuals through education and training is helping create better economic opportunities for all. Then, they provide valuable advice on how educators can navigate the world of advocacy and legislation to bring about meaningful change.
In this course, participants will learn to design and deliver an online course using Canvas. This course will guide participants in creating their own course using best practices to set up a visual home page, add engaging content, assess student learning, and communicate effectively using Canvas. The focus of this course is to learn about pedagogical practices with online course design by using the features within Canvas to create a course that will benefit both the teacher and students. UEN Sr. Technical Trainer Matthew Winters has been selected for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 20 to Watch Award for 2023. The 20 to Watch Award is given to educators who:

  • “Demonstrate the ability to both deliberately plan for and apply technology to improve the educational setting.

  • Continuously improve their professional practice through the exploration of new techniques and the consistent evaluation and reflection on current practices.

  • Share their work as a model that reflects ISTE’s mission to innovate teaching and learning, accelerate good practice and solve tough problems in education.”

He was selected for his work on Utah Education Network courses including PCBL + Tech and directing UCET’s 2023 conference to record attendance. He will be honored as part of ISTE’s 2023 conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in June. Read the press release here.

Educators are increasingly expected to exhibit skills and knowledge of using technology to enhance student learning. The UEN Educational Technology Endorsement Program is grounded in the USBE EdTech Competencies and the Utah Effective Teaching Standards. The Competency-Based Educational Technology Endorsement is divided into four courses. Participants will come away with a portfolio of work that aligns with each competency.

UEN at Stanford d.school for Future Foundations

Sr. Technical Trainer Matthew Winters spent a few days this past week at Stanford University at their world-renowned d.school. Throughout the two days at the d.school, educators and experts discussed how to best explore and prepare for the future and how to design toward it. Learn more about Futures here.

UEN at Iron County School District and Provo School District

The UEN Professional Development team spent the last week traveling the state and joining professional development days. Jami Gardner, Rob Bentley, and Matthew Winters joined Provo School District for professional development on a variety of topics. Val O'Bryan and Matthew Winters joined Iron County School District for some great PD on ELA, Math and Personalized Learning PD.

Four Corners Computer Science Convening - July 9th-11th

Four Corners Computer Science Convening
For K-12 educators and administrators that work directly with Native American students. If you already teach CS OR are curious about teaching CS OR would like to connect with others doing similar work, this conference is for you!

This event will take place at Fort Lewis College in beautiful Durango, CO. Due to generous funding from Google and support from CSTA, registration, transportation, lodging, and meals are covered for those who qualify.

Utah Rural Schools Association Conference - July 12th-14th

The conference provides hands-on and breakout sessions focusing on insights and interventions with strategies to provide professional learning to improve student outcomes. Sessions will focus on strengthening mental and behavioral health supports, student supports, grading practices, literacy best practices, strengthening the guaranteed curriculum at each school and developing a culture of investment.

Resource Spotlight

The Utah Rural Schools Association Conference is coming up in mid-July and it is always a great resource for Utah educators and leaders. Throughout the year many rural educators are supported by one of the four regional service centers throughout Utah. Over the next few weeks, we will explore and highlight each one.


The Southwest Educational Development Center is located in Cedar City and serves educators in the Southwest region of Utah. They provide professional development on a variety of educational technology tools and ideas including robotics, Canvas, Google, and more. They also help provide support for students with Autism and the teachers and parents that support them. If you are a teacher located in the Southwest region of Utah, please take a minute and explore how they can help support your work as an educator.
