Celebrating our students today at the #PBIS Block Party #Smallwoodstrong

Thanks to Ms. Taylor and Mr. Bankenstein for grilling up a delicious lunch for our staff today during the block party!

A group of our students, including members of the Environmental Club, visited the Nanjemoy Creek Environmental Education Center today. It looks like they had a great time learning about our environment.

General Smallwood Middle School is a PBIS Rewards School.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a school-wide framework that aims to create a safe and effective learning environment for students:

• Goal

  PBIS aims to improve student outcomes in social, emotional, behavioral, and academic areas. It also aims to improve the school climate and teacher health and wellbeing.

• Approach

  PBIS is a preventative, research-based framework that uses a tiered system to support students. It involves:

  • Establishing positive expectations and behaviors

  • Teaching and encouraging expected behaviors

  • Discouraging inappropriate behaviors

  • Using data to guide decision-making

Students at General Smallwood Middle School can earn PBIS points based on our TERK Principals. They are TEAMWORK, EFFORT, RESPECT, and KNOWLEDGE. Points are given by teachers and administrators in the building throughout the school day. Points are stored in student accounts and can be spent at our School Store for items such as chips, cookies, candy, juice, and water.

• June 13th: Last day of School for Students
• June 17th: Last day of School for Teachers
• July 4th: Independence Day
• August 18th: Teachers return to work
• August 25th: First day of school for students.
