Principal's Corner
Hello Miles Mustangs!
Thanks for checking out this month's community newsletter. We strive to communicate as much and as often as possible. This newsletter is just one way for you to stay connected to the happenings around Miles. Be sure to read the section from Alex, our counselor, as he highlights cooperation and how that positively impacts peer-to-peer relations. Our lovely preschool program focuses on registration, policies, as well as their Character Strong vocabulary word for the month. Our garden instructor, Anna, always puts forth some wonderful pictures that show students enjoying learning experiences outdoors. Each day at Miles is filled with learning and growing. We hope you see those represented throughout.
At a glance, February brings the second round of parent-teacher conference (and also half days!), Rodeo Break, and of course, another Spirit Week. Not to mention it is the best time of year to make your tax credit contribution before filing taxes. All of these are referenced throughout the newsletter so do enjoy!
Happy Reading,
Principal Steele
Counselor's Corner
This month’s focus is Cooperation. One way to think about Cooperation is “working together to reach shared goals.” As a family, talk about how this definition applies to how you work together at home. What are some goals you share? Cooperation is one of the big traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students succeed. Throughout Miles, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.
Review Cooperation as a family! Search through your cabinet for some board games your family has not played in a while or grab a deck of UNO cards, or a simple game of Connect 4. Pop some popcorn and have fun playing together! Look for moments of cooperation that you can point out.
For example:
● Choosing which game to play
● Choosing who gets to go first
● Handling wins and losses
● Working together to solve a problem
Warmly,
-Mr. Alex

Honesty - We all experience situations in which we must work with others to accomplish a goal or task in our lives. Whether we are working with friends or with someone new, we need tools to help us successfully navigate those situations and maintain healthy relationships.

Winter Gardening Wonders
The cool weather, falling leaves, cool season plants, and more opportunities to help have been wonderful in the garden as well as the field, courtyard, and classrooms. Primary classes have been getting to know the earthworms that now live at Miles. Intermediate classes have focused on food, both harvesting and planting. Middle schoolers included garden work in their service day by preparing eggshells and cartons for future use, plus Wappishaw continues to care for the pond. Rm 1 enjoys reading to animals each week. Raking – and playing in – leaves is a highlight during Wednesday Tool Time, as well as continuing to pick up litter each week.
We are also thankful for new garden interns to assist, now on Mondays through Thursdays! Welcome to Yunlu, Isaac, Aaliyah, and Josi from the School Garden Workshop.
