Principals Message
There are many things about Williamsville East that amaze me on a daily basis. As I’ve mentioned before, my background is not with high schools. So being at Williamsville East has opened my eyes to what life is like for students grades 9-12. I’m amazed at the students’ level of independence and their focus on getting a top-notch education, while still being teens.
I have a mental list of things at Williamsville East that I believe are unique. Near or at the top of the list is the area called “The Commons”. I’m fortunate to have had a variety of educational experiences—teaching and administrating. Nothing could have prepared me for what goes on every day in the Commons!
Socializing, studying, eating, reviewing, relaxing—all these (and more) are happening every day, every period, before school and after school in the Commons. The energy and positive vibes are unique and probably wouldn’t work nearly as well at any other school. Visitors have commented to me that it seems more like a college environment in the Commons—students are given a high level of independence and are expected to act responsibly.
If I’ve been cooped up in my office, I love going to the Commons and spending some time with the students that are there. Taking a five or ten minute “break” by talking to them refreshes me and makes me happy. They are incredibly respectful and friendly.
Life in the Commons is very uncommon. It is amazing and it is one of the things that will stay with me after my time at Williamsville East ends.
