Educational Support Professionals

Every day, Noni Landaluce helps keep the Hillside Library running smoothly by creating displays, training student aides, shelving books, recommending titles to eager readers, processing books, and handling dozens of other tasks. Generations of Hillsiders remember “Miss Noni” fondly as an essential part of the Hillside landscape.

Last spring, the Boise Education Association named Noni Landaluce their Education Support Personnel member of the year. Noni was nominated by her peers and colleagues, and her nomination was considered along with about 70 others before she was chosen as the 2017 recipient of the ESP award.

Noni has worked at Hillside Junior High School since 1991, and as an assistant in the Library under two different Librarians since 1994. She started in the Boise Schools as a teacher aide in 1983, working at both Taft and Pierce Park, before coming to Hillside.

Although she was recognized as an outstanding ESP in 2017, friends and co-workers have known for decades what a valuable asset Noni is to the Hillside Library and the Boise students she has served. Congratulations, Noni!

The NEA ESP conference is the premier professional development opportunity for Education Support Professionals across the nation. The goal of this conference is to enhance the skills and knowledge of ESP members to positively impact student achievement, build community relations, organize members, advocate for educators, build stronger locals, and help our members do their jobs better. The conference offers more than 60 different hands-on workshops over the course of four days. Pre-Conference workshop opportunities are offered on topics ranging from social justice, early career educators, leadership development, team building and school climate.

Last year the theme was: Uniting, Inspiring, and Leading for the whole student. The conference took place in Dallas, Texas where participants were able to attend sessions such as

1) ESP leading the Associations,

2) Exploring Unconscious Bias in the workplace,

3) Para power: Building the foundation for effective teams, and

4)understanding challenging behaviors.

The conference hosted over 70 workshops that participants were able to select to attend.

This year, the conference will take place in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The hotel is located right across the street from Disney Springs. The conference will take place March 23-25 and will have a variety of workshops to select from.

Enjoying a Cinco de Mayo theme, 8 ESP members spent a mini-weekend at the downtown Hampton Inn, May 5-6. Offered by the BEA Steering Committee, the retreat was a relaxing time for some of our newer members to learn about what’s going on in their association as well as making new friends. Informative sessions about member benefits and ESP rights were offered as well as how to manage stress and handle difficult conversations.

At the end of the weekend, attendees came away with a better understanding of what the BEA has to offer and how to get more involved. Knowing that ESP issues need strong voices behind them, these “Sparkies” will be exploring how they can become advocates for all of us.

We had a great opening social on Wednesday, October 18th at Cafe Ole where we had 6 ESp's sign up with us and lots of people walked away winners with gift cards and prizes. Check out this pictures of the great time we had!
