Eagle Excellence Volume #24
Vivian Banks Charter School: Apr. 22-25, 2025
Attendance and Chronic Absenteeism Update
Attendance the week before break was 94.93% which is down just slightly from 95.77% the previous week. Over the last four weeks, attendance has averaged 93.87%.
After 147 school days, cumulative attendance is up a bit to 93.27% from 93.21% the previous week, and the cumulative Chronic Absenteeism rate (10% or more of cumulative school days missed) is down - in a good way - to 7%. Our Chronic Absenteeism rate hasn't been this low since early December. Way to go, Eagles...let's keep it up!
Thank you for all that each of you do in support of VBCS and student attendance!
Vivian Banks Important Facilities Update
Dear Eagle Community,
This week, our K/1 class will be moving to Classroom #1 in the St. Juan Diego Center, and our 3rd Grade class will be moving to Classroom #2 in the same location. We are incredibly thankful for the local partnership of Father G and Ms. Claudia, who have worked with district and school leadership to make this change a reality! Additionally, huge shout-outs to Ms. Kelly Lyons and her K/1 students, Ms. Jessica Knust and her 3rd Grade students, and the entire VBCS staff and all students for their flexibility, collaboration, and teamwork during what has been an incredibly tough time. You are all appreciated.
Please stay tuned for more facility updates as they become available.

Weekly Message from Mr. Costa
Dear Eagle Community,
Welcome back from break, VBCS families! I hope your time away was restful and rejuvenating, and we’re so excited to finish the year strong together. It's hard to believe, but we have just 33 days left of school!
I want to take a moment to share our love, appreciation, and a HUGE congratulations to our incredible VBCS Teacher of the Year, Ms. Lestene Amerson, and our amazing District Classified Employee of the Year, Ms. Jackie Withers—two truly deserving champions of our students and school community. They will both be officially celebrated at the May BUSD school board meeting. Details will be shared.
As we return to routines, please keep in mind that state testing is just around the corner, and we appreciate your support in helping students feel confident, rested, and ready. We also want to celebrate YOU—our families and students—for your continued efforts around daily attendance. Because of our collective work, our Chronic Absenteeism rate has dropped to just 7%—WOW! Let’s keep that momentum going as we head into the final stretch of a fantastic school year!
As always, if you have any questions, comments, ideas, or would like to say hello in person, please feel free to email me at daniel.costa@bonsallusd.com. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you to support the amazing students of Vivian Banks Charter School. Have a wonderful week!
Go Eagles,
Mr. Danny Costa
