Spring Band Concert
6th and 7th Grade Science Fair
Our 2nd annual 6th and 7th Grade Science Fair is next week Thursday, May 30th from 5:00-6:30PM! This incredible event is open to all families to come and see some of the fascinating science experiments our student scientists have been working on this year. The cafeteria will be filled with posters on topics including the impact of sea's saltiness on buoyancy, the phases of the moon's effect on sea life, the effect of oyster filtration on polluted water, the impact of fossil fuels on Williamsburg's climate, and many more!
Graduation Speech Submissions
Is your child interested in giving a senior speech at graduation? We are looking for two 8th graders to deliver inspirational speeches to their peers at graduation. If your child is interested, they need to turn in a draft of their speech by June 10 to their ELA teacher. A committee of MS 50 staff members will review the speeches and select the two speeches that will to be delivered at graduation. Attached is an explanation of what needs to be turned in as well as a rubric the committee will use to make their selections.
Classroom Spotlight: Math
6th Grade- Putting it all together
In this unit, students use concepts and skills from previous units. In answering questions about ratios of two populations, they work with percentages that include numbers expressed in the form of a fraction or as decimals. In answering questions about diagrams of rectangles with whole-number dimensions, they connect arithmetic features of the dimensions such as remainder or greatest common factor with geometric features of the diagrams. In answering questions about votes, voting methods, and equitable distribution, they use their knowledge of equivalent ratios, part–part ratios, percentages, and unit rates.
7th Grade- Putting it All Together
In this unit, students use concepts and skills from previous units to solve three groups of problems. In calculating or estimating quantities associated with running a restaurant, e.g., number of calories in one serving of a recipe, expected number of customers served per day, or floor space, they use their knowledge of proportional relationships, interpreting survey findings, and scale drawings. In estimating quantities such as age in hours and minutes or number of times their hearts have beaten, they use measurement conversions and consider accuracy of their estimates. Estimation of area and volume measurements from length measurements introduces considerations of measurement error.
8th Grade- Targeted Algebra Regents Skills Review
In this unit, students are using data from a recent mock Algebra regents to prepare for the upcoming regents exam on June 4th. Students have identified areas that they want to strengthen. Classes are engaged in regular cycles of assessment, individual data analysis and reteaching of targeted skills to fine tune their conceptual understanding in preparation for the regents exam.
50's Got Talent!
We are excited to announce the return of 50's Got Talent! This exciting Talent Show competition will take place after school on Tuesday, June 11. We are looking for student performers to sign up and show off their skills to our school community! Students can sign up outside the auditorium or online at ms50.org/talent. There will be an audition for all interested acts next week Tuesday, May 28th after school in the auditorium. Contact Mr. Stripp with any questions.
