Principal's Message
May is usually when it really begins to feel like the spring season has arrived in this part of the province. The weather is warming - at least most of the time - and we've even had a few recent showers that have helped the grass to green-up and the trees to begin budding out. It's a season of transition that I personally really enjoy, even though it often requires additional layers of clothing and waterproof footwear to navigate!
This time of year is not just a time of seasonal transition and fluctuating weather, though... it's also a time when the transition to the next school year begins. Teachers are nearing the completion of curriculum, year-end field trips and activities are booked and plans for farewell assemblies and celebrations of learning are well underway. For families with students who will be aging-out of our K-5 school, you are probably aware that École Charlie Killam School has scheduled an Open House on May 23 and that their staff have already begun the Gr. 6 orientation process with visits to our school to share about the various programs their school offers and to answer students' questions.
And, if the plan is for your child to return to CRS next year, plans for the 2024-2025 school year are already beginning here too! Soon, we will be able to start working on plans for the upcoming school year and begin the processes of determining things like teacher assignments, classroom locations and, eventually, drafting class lists. A great deal of thought and energy from our entire staff will go into creating the best plan possible to ensure success for all students. It's extremely complex work that all kinds of different variables into account. Requests for specific teachers and/or specific classmates are not part of this calculus, however.
Staff configurations, specific teacher assignments and the students who will be attending in September can and often do change between this time of year and the arrival of September - sometimes those types of changes continue well into the next school year. So, although I will always appreciate the information that that I can gather when parents and guardians share insights about their children, please understand that I will not guarantee that any requests for specific classroom arrangements in the upcoming school year can or will be fulfilled. Thank you for your cooperation in this and for trusting our staff as we begin the work of building the next successful school year for your child and for the 300 or so other students that we are privileged to work with each day!
If you have questions about this process, or about anything else, please don't hesitate to connect with me by phone or email.
Yours in Education,
Reid Lansing,
CRS Principal

School Attendance
Did you know that all BRSD Schools have attendance policies?
The CRS Attendance Policy has been updated and posted to our website. Please review it by clicking HERE. We know that school attendance is an important factor for students to achieve their greatest successes. Our updated policy will be rolled out in earnest when we return in the New Year.
We endeavor to have all students' attendance entered before 8:45 am. After 8:45 am, our Messenger system will start calling and emailing any student that has been marked absent, with no parent call. This helps to ensure our students are safe.
Our phone lines can be very busy, so please leave a message or try again if you don't reach anyone.
Students who arrive late, can come in through the front door and we will sign them in and send them off to their class.

Sora Reading App
Did you know that Battle River School Division offers free e-books and audiobooks to students, faculty and staff? Students can simply log in using school credentials (Google SSO) and instantly access hundreds of eBooks and audiobooks on virtually any device. Get started today at https://soraapp.com or download the free Sora app for Android or iOS. Our digital collection is available 24/7 and all you need to get started is an internet connection and your school email. Check it out by downloading Sora, the student reading app or going to the Sora website.
You can easily find us in Sora by searching:
"Let’s find your school" and you key in Battle River School Division (not Chester Ronning School). Use your students' school email address@brsd.ab.ca and their school password. If you need help finding this information contact either your student’s teacher or Mrs. Green.
Our digital learning commons connects students with a collection of reading materials to supplement their studies, as well as offering the kind of titles they would find in a public library for pleasure reading. There is a great opportunity to broaden our collection with required reading and recommended titles that are used in classes. From classic literature to graphic novels, there is a wide variety of books available!
You can also connect your account to the Parkland Regional Library collection (even if you don't have a Camrose Public Library card) to expand the number of books available to you. The age ratings will also automatically align with what we have in our division, so younger students shouldn't have access to young adult content. Please follow the guidelines on the poster below to connect to the Parkland Regional Library.
Digital books are compatible with smartphones, tablets, e-Readers and computers. Titles can be read right in the internet browser or downloaded using the free Sora app. Happy reading!
If you need help please contact Mrs. Green our LCF she would be happy help you.

Eye See...Eye Learn Program
On behalf of the Alberta Association of Optometrists, we are excited to share the Eye See Eye Learn parent packages. There is Alberta Health coverage towards the eye exams and the program provides free eyeglasses to those kindergarten students who are found to need eyeglasses. Please see the link below.
As 80% of children’s learning is visual, it is essential to emphasize the importance of scheduling an eye examination for all school aged children, and especially for kindergarten students as they begin their in-school learning years. Early detection and intervention can significantly impact a child's educational journey.
