Principal's Message
Hello Bernal Bronco Students and Families:
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I hope that your summer was filled with family, friends, relaxation and adventure. It is hard to believe that the new school year is upon us, but I look forward to another great school year. Rebecca Velasquez is Bernal’s new school secretary. She comes to Bernal after 17 years as a school secretary at Stipe School. We are very excited to welcome her to the Bernal family. Below you will find additional new staff joining us this school year:
Juliet Kulig SDC Teacher
Scott Hoffman Science Teacher
Roxana Chita-Williams RSP Teacher
Sonia Koosha Math Teacher
Jill Vaughn SDC Teacher
Allison Juhasz Art Teacher
Lina Sar Science Teacher
Skye Johnson PE Teacher
Mrs. Slater is back teaching social studies this year after teaching electives last year and Mr. Medina is teaching electives this year. Mrs. Neumeister will be teaching one section of Journalism/Yearbook to go along with her Language Arts classes. Ms. Mandel has joined the Language Arts department, teaching 4 sections of Language Arts and one section of English Language Development. Mr. Beaulieu will continue teaching our Leadership class, along with his PE classes.
Please be sure to ask your student about Bernal’s signature program, Advisory class. Bernal’s advisory class provides students a time to gather and “ground” themselves so that they are ready for a rigorous and meaningful school day. In advisory, students receive daily school announcements, participate in school spirit activities, connect with their teachers and peers in a low pressure situation and receive lessons in a variety of areas such as digital citizenship, anti-bullying, test-taking, conflict resolution, and other life-skill areas. We look forward to you learning more about our advisory program throughout the year.
A friendly reminder about our common student dress code at Bernal:
1. Solid back, white, or gray shirts must be worn daily. Logos of any color are okay,
2. Denim blue jean, black or khaki pants, shorts or skirts (at least fingertip length) must be worn daily,
3. Bernal spirit wear or any shirt that supports a Bernal School activity may be worn on any day (sports, CJSF, band, clubs, etc.).
Parents choosing to drive their student to school must use the appropriate drop-off and pick-up locations. Student safety is the highest priority. Please do not park and allow your student to cross traffic on San Ignacio to get to school. Please drop your student off on the appropriate side of the street that will allow your student to walk into the building without having to cross the street. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and commitment to keeping all of our students safe.
As always, take care of yourselves, and each other.

HERO
It is our pleasure to announce that for the 17-18 school year we will begin using a new platform called Hero to track positive and redirected student behavior at Bernal Intermediate. The decision to bring Hero into our school was made with one goal in mind: to make Bernal a better and more positive environment to grow and to learn.
The Hero program is used by schools nationwide for recognizing stand-out student behavior. Hero will help us operate efficiently, and it will help us keep consistent policies running throughout the school. Hero will keep an accurate record of things like tardies, school event attendance, classroom participation, and positive student behavior. Hero also allows our staff to be more data driven.
To register, follow these easy steps:
1) Go to https://access.heropowered.com
2) Select the parent or student button
3) Click “Create An Account”
4) Enter name, your email address, choose a password, click “Create user”
5) Click “Add Student”
6) Enter student ID# and other identifiers, located on your student’s schedule of classes.
Download the Hero App
Once you register online, you may download the HERO app from the itunes or Google Play stores to keep track of HERO behavior history and Hero point balances.

Back To School Night Parent Survey
If you attended Bernal's Back to School Night on August 31, 2017, we would appreciate your feedback in order to make future Back to School Night's as beneficial and informative as possible. Thank you for taking the time to complete the following survey!
2 Absences Per Month x 9 Months of School = Less Likely to Graduate From High School
Your child’s daily, on-time attendance is critical to their success in school. And while some challenges to your child’s school attendance are unavoidable, it’s important to understand the impact of each absence.
A student is considered chronically absent if they miss only two days of school per month (18 days in a year), whether the absences are excused or unexcused. This is true for children as early as elementary school, when they are at a higher risk of falling behind in reading. Even one year of chronic absence can cause a child to fall behind academically and decrease a child’s chances of graduating from high school, which can have long-term consequences on their financial independence, physical well-being and mental health.
The good news? Attending school every day increases a child’s chances of success in school and in life.
Use the link below to find more information on reasons why kids miss school and resources that can help you set your child up for long-term success by making sure they are in school every day.
