Student Snack Bar Open for Business!
Students from Mrs. Yarnevich's class have launched a snack bar within the cafeteria, aimed at fostering essential work and social skills. Through operating the cash register, handling transactions, and engaging with peers in a respectful manner, they are gaining invaluable experience. The snack bar operates during all lunch periods on Thursdays and Fridays.
LCBC Donation to Roller Nation Foundation to Benefit Theater Program
LCBC Harrisburg has graciously contributed fifty percent of the funds needed for theater curtains to the Roller Nation Foundation. LCBC has consistently proven to be an invaluable partner to both the Foundation and the District, showcasing their commitment through various acts of support such as creating inspirational posters during the holidays and assisting with grounds cleanup.
The Foundation and the District are deeply grateful for the ongoing support from LCBC Harrisburg, under the leadership of Catherine Rachel Day. It is through partnerships like these that students, teachers, and administrators are empowered to continue their important work.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to LCBC Harrisburg for this extraordinary contribution.
Cocoa & Cookies for Compliments
Mrs. Donnelly’s homeroom recently celebrated with hot cocoa and cookies as a reward for demonstrating hallway PRIDE! Students actively sought compliments from other teachers while walking in the hallway. Each compliment earned them a piece of a snowman displayed on the classroom door, with the goal of completing the snowman to earn their reward.
Students Visit Derry Township Police Department
Mrs. Warner, Transition/Co-op Coordinator, organized a trip for students from Mrs. Yarnevich’s class to visit the Derry Township Police Department. During the visit, students had the opportunity to meet detectives, experience wearing bulletproof vests, observe evidence lockers, and explore the activity room. Additionally, they had the exciting chance to meet Tor, one of only six dogs in Pennsylvania trained to detect electronics!
Reading Around the World : Title 1 Literacy Night
This year, students traveled around the world during our annual elementary school literacy night! To start the evening, each student was given a passport in order to travel around the centers provided. Each center incorporated literacy elements and information about countries around the world. Did you know that hopscotch originated from Ancient Rome? Students were also able to learn facts about individual countries, color the countries flags, and decorate them on a cookie. Floyd Stokes (also known as Super Reader) read to our students and spoke about the importance of stopping bullying and being kind. What a great way to celebrate reading!

Urban Rhythms: Exploring Street Poetry
Students in Ms. Dawson's 4th grade reading classes are in the middle of a poetry unit and have been exposed to many forms of poetry from different authors. Students enjoyed a poem titled, "Street Music" by Arnold Adoff, which included many examples of onomatopoeia (sound words) celebrating the sights, sounds, people, and rhythms of the city.
The students were assigned to write their own street poems including the sights and sounds in their own towns of Steelton or Highspire.
This activity sparked the students' creativity in an authentic way. It was a success and I'm so proud of the finished products!
Music In Our Schools Month
