Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week
Waverley Elementary School - October 2
Third graders at Waverley Elementary heard from several special visitors and about local agriculture, learned where their foods come from, watched Farmer Katelyn Robertson from Catoctin Mountain Orchard demonstrate how to pick apples and got to taste two different apple varieties picked straight from the farm.
Because of the success of the Farm to School Program, FCPS is expanding its reach to more regions in the county. The Farm to School Program offers healthy, fresh locally grown produce to students and helps support local farms and the economy of Frederick County.
In a commitment to provide healthy food choices, the program will go from serving 9 schools to serving 34.
Food and Nutrition Services is very excited and honored to be awarded the Local Food for Schools grant from MSDE for the 2nd year in a row. These funds make it possible for our school cafeterias to offer local leafy greens and seasonal fruit and vegetables the entire school year.

FCPS Job Openings
FCPS employees benefit from market-competitive salaries and outstanding benefits. We provide a supportive working environment, professional development training and mentoring. Most importantly, we offer the opportunity to make a difference in our students’ lives!
We recognize that educating our county's students requires a team effort. This involves contributions made by team members, both inside and outside of the classroom.
School Bus Driver Shortage
Like many school districts across the country, FCPS is facing a shortage of bus drivers. This shortage means that about 20 or more bus routes are being covered by a small number of substitute drivers, Transportation office staff, or other drivers who are filling in. While we have managed to cover these routes, it has affected pickup and drop-off times for students.
Using substitutes and office staff can cause delays, in addition to usual factors like traffic. To keep you informed about any delays, our Transportation department updates a bus status board, which you can find at this LINK and on the “Transportation” page of our website, www.fcps.org. This board shows the most current information on bus times. If a bus route is canceled due to staff shortages, we will send notifications, and you can also check the status board for updates.
We are actively looking for more bus drivers. If you or someone you know is interested, please apply online at https://www.applitrack.com/fcps/OnlineApp/. Your help in spreading the word is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your patience and support.

Applications for 2025-26 Student Member of the Board

The role of the student member is to bring a student viewpoint to the Board of Education (BOE) and represent a multitude of educational issues, with public meetings held two evenings per month. The function is not to represent any particular special-interest group of students on an issue, but rather to respect the diversity of students’ points of view, to improve communication between the student body, staff and BOE members, and to inform students of policies and decisions executed by the BOE.
Interested sophomores and juniors should contact their Student Government Association (SGA) advisors for a nomination packet or visit https://www.fcps.org/boe/student-board-member-election
Applicants must complete the entire student packet, including nomination form, letter of recommendation and question response by the application deadline – Friday, November 1, 2024, at 4:00 PM. Update on End of Course (EOC) Assessments for Some High School Students
In 2023, the Maryland State Board of Education updated graduation regulations that affect high school courses with required state assessments in science and social studies. Specifically, for students enrolled in American Government and Biology courses and/or their equivalents, a state-required End of Course (EOC) assessment will count for 20% of the final course grade and will be included in the final grade calculation on the student’s report card and transcript. Additional information from the Maryland State Department of Education can be found here.
In Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS), the grade calculation that includes the EOC score will be applied in a manner that maximizes benefit for students. Additional details can be found below.
Grade Calculation: Please refer to FCPS Regulation 416-01, Secondary Grading, Reporting, and Intervention (pages 8-9), for how the final course grade will be calculated, using the traditional “quality point” method and then a subsequent calculation factoring in the EOC score.
Advanced Placement (AP) courses: The AP Government exam can be taken in lieu of the required state assessment and will not be factored into the course grade. For AP Biology, students will have to take the required state assessment in science, as it is a federal accountability requirement.
Absence from Testing: EOC assessments are required for graduation. Students who do not take the assessment within the window will receive a grade of “Missing” and no credit will be awarded for the course until the assessment is taken. Students will be required to make up the assessment at the next available administration.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s science or social studies teacher.
BES-VES Redistricting
FCPS is planning a redistricting study in preparation for the opening of a replacement Valley Elementary School for the 2025-26 school year.
The purpose of the redistricting study is to balance enrollments at Valley Elementary and Brunswick Elementary schools. The new Valley Elementary is being built next to the existing school with a state-rated capacity of 745 students. If boundaries are not changed, Valley is projected to open at 73% capacity.
Brunswick Elementary has a state-rated capacity of 702 students and is operating at 112% capacity.
The redistricting study will be led by consultant CropperGIS and FCPS facilities planning staff. FCPS will collect data, evaluate options, engage the school communities and present an option to the Board of Education in accordance with Board of Education Policy 200. The public will have several opportunities to provide feedback.
