UND NSPA Monthly Communiqué
April 2022 Issue 18
World Peace
The 2022 Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship competition has now opened. As I prepare for this year's competition, I want to share some prescient words by the late Senator J. William Fulbright, the namesake of the Fulbright Scholarship Program, who championed international educational exchange as a strategy to secure world peace.
In the aftermath of WWII, Senator Fulbright presented a bill to the U.S. Congress, signed into law by President Truman, about an international educational exchange program that became the Fulbright Program. Fulbright believed that mutual understanding between nations occurs at the person to person level. Educational exchange offered that mechanism as scholars collaborate with others from different countries on academic projects of mutual interest.
“International educational exchange is the most significant current project designed to continue the process of humanizing mankind to the point, we would hope, that men can learn to live in peace--eventually even to cooperate in constructive activities rather than compete in a mindless contest of mutual destruction....We must try to expand the boundaries of human wisdom, empathy and perception, and there is no way of doing that except through education." [From remarks on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Fulbright Program, 1976]… Senator J. William Fulbright (1945-1974)
I hope you consider Fulbright, Critical Language Scholarships, CBYX, Gilman, Boren or other study abroad scholarships as part of your journey to make this world better.

Student Spotlights
Three UND students win prestigious national/international scholarships.
- Taylor Roehl, a Fulbright Semi-finalist (competition still in progress), wins the 2022 CBYX Young Professionals Program Fellowship. Among the 500 CBYX Young Professional applicants who applied nationwide, Taylor was one of 75 American students selected to represent the United States as a citizen ambassador while studying at a German University the next academic year.
- Sydney Menne wins the 2022 Goldwater Scholarship. Sydney joins the ranks of the brightest undergraduate researchers in the nation. 417 new scholarships were awarded for the 2022 competition following nominations from 433 institutions. UND’s last Goldwater recipient was in 2013. The Goldwater scholarship, which was created in 1986 in honor of the late Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, is considered one of the most prestigious scholarships available to undergraduate students studying natural science, engineering, or mathematics. She already successfully secured many prestigious local (Pearl Young) and international (2021 DAAD-Rise/2022 Brooke Owens) scholarships.
- Sabrina Sullivan, a transfer student from New Mexico completing her first year at UND, wins the 2022 Goldwater Scholarship. Sabrina has 14 years of experience working in the oil and gas field and 4 years working in the Air Force before she transferred to UND to pursue her online undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering. Her most recent and proudest achievement is helping to develop an innovative lift to more efficiently and ecologically extract oil. This lift is currently under review with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
