English Learner Family Engagement Survey
Parents of English Learners: Through Friday, March 1st, Poway Unified will be conducting our Family Engagement and Accountability survey to gather input from all families of English Learner students. This survey helps shape the District’s goals and guide priorities for the 2024-2025 school year. Your feedback is extremely helpful as we continue to seek ways to better our English Learner program. Please click HERE to complete the survey.
PUSD Transfer Window - OPEN NOW!
The Poway Unified transfer window is now open! Transfer requests for students who live within the Poway Unified boundaries and would like to attend a different Poway school other than their school of residence should be submitted online by visiting the PUSD webpage and clicking the “Transfers” link on the home page. This includes incoming siblings of current students. Please enroll your student at their school of residence when new student enrollment opens online on April 1, 2024. Transfer requests cannot be processed until the student is enrolled in their school of residence. The transfer window closes on March 31st at 5:00 pm. For more information, please visit PUSD’s Residency & Transfers webpage.
Continuing Student Registration
March 1 through 31. A digital packet must be completed for all returning students. This will allow for proper placement of your student for the 2024-2025 school year. This annual digital process will allow a family to complete one single “family” packet instead of completing one packet per student. Packets can be completed using any computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection.
- Login and complete the digital registration packet online at the ParentVue portal
- Once parents/guardians have completed the online registration, please download and complete any required forms and follow site direction for processing and collection.

Character Counts Picture -Wednesday, March 6th!
Kids are encouraged to wear their designated grade level color for the photo on Wednesday, March 6th (TK/K: Purple, 1st: Blue, 2nd: Green, 3rd: Yellow, 4th: Orange, 5th: Red)ATTENTION COYOTES! Our Annual Character Counts Photo is happening on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6TH! Character Counts is a program that teaches all of our kiddos about core ethical values. These 6 pillars are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship and are represented by 6 different colors. Every year, we take a school wide photo for our yearbook to show we demonstrate these values that transcend cultural, religious, and socioeconomic differences. We encourage kids to wear a t-shirt in their designated grade level color for the photo: TK/K: Purple, 1st: Blue, 2nd: Green, 3rd: Yellow, 4th: Orange, 5th: Red.

Team CV Volunteer Opportunities
Hello Canyon View Volunteers,
We are looking for volunteers for upcoming events. These are some smaller jobs for parents/ guardians who are looking to start with a smaller task. Seasoned CV volunteers are also welcome, of course!
#1 The Jog-A-Thon. A Foundation event which raises money for Music, Art, Computer Science, PE with Coach Chase, IMPACT, Science Lab, technology at school, and much more. The Jog-A-Thon has a chair (leader) and is looking for committee members to help plan and run this huge event. Jog-A-Thon date is March 22. It runs most of the school day, with different grades at different times, TBD.
#2 The Silent Auction. Also a Foundation event to raise money for the same programs listed above (see Jog-A-Thon). Date is May 17. The Silent Auction is an online auction with the big finale at the Coyote Roundup. (See below for more info about the Roundup.) The Silent Auction also has a chair and is looking for committee members to help. Tasks include finding vendors to make donations, communicating with CV room parents, putting together baskets, and other organizational tasks.
#3 The School Dance (formerly Winter Dance). This is a very popular PTO Event. Date is March 29. There are 2 seasoned event chairs and they need help on the day of the event (am and pm) for decorating, running the event (snack table, merchandise table), and clean up.
#4 Science Fair. This PTO event also has a chairperson and she needs help with judging. Feb 29. It takes a lot of judges to run this event. Parents of Science Fair scientists are a good fit, but it is also a fun event to attend even if your kids chose not to enter. A great volunteer opportunity for parents with a science background/ knowledge. No experience necessary.
#5 Garden. The PTO Garden is looking for some more help. They really need someone who can volunteer 2 hours, once a month, to cut back weeds.
#6 The Coyote Roundup. Our big annual event at CV. Date is May 17. It is our carnival style event, with games, food, cake walk, prizes, and our Silent Auction in the MPR. There are multiple committees for the Roundup and we need more volunteers.
Thank you so much for helping make our school such a fun community! If interested or to learn more, please reply to me (just me) or you can email the Foundation or PTO Presidents (see above).
Thank you,
Sabrina Monahan
PTO and Foundation VP of Volunteers
TEAM CV Meeting
Coyote parents (members or not) are invited to attend our monthly Team CV meetings, especially if you are interested in learning what the PTO & Foundation do, how money that is raised is spent, or are interested in training or shadowing for a position on the board/s next year. Many of our current board members are graduating out with their 5th graders this year and having people who are comfortable taking over key roles is important to ensuring we maintain a strong partnership for our younger kids. Though formal childcare is not available, children are invited to attend meetings and sit in the room with parents. Meetings occur every first Thursday of the month at 6 pm in the Innovation Station or via Zoom. For Zoom info, please DM us to be added to the distribution list.
Our next meeting is Thursday, March 7th. Hope to see you there!

Attendance Matters at CVES!
Attendance rates improved last week, but we are still far from our goal. Remember that every day of school counts. Our teachers plan lessons in an intentional sequence; each day builds on concepts from the days prior. When students miss school, they can develop holes in their learning that are difficult to recover from. If you can't avoid missing school and you will be out for three days or more, call the CVES office to request an OCIS contract.
To report an absence or request an OCIS email or call our attendance hotline:

Because Claudette, written by Tracey Baptiste, illustrated by Tonya Engel
This picture book biography celebrates both Claudette Colvin, whose teen-aged activism launched the Montgomery bus boycott, and the power of collective action.
Malala's Magic Pencil, written by Malala Yousafzai, illustrated by Kerascoët
As a child in Pakistan, Malala made a wish for a magic pencil. She would use it to make everyone happy, to erase the smell of garbage from her city, to sleep an extra hour in the morning. But as she grew older, Malala saw that there were more important things to wish for. She saw a world that needed fixing. And even if she never found a magic pencil, Malala realized that she could still work hard every day to make her wishes come true. https://youtu.be/Ti8sirjR1C8?feature=shared
Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly, Illustrated by Laura Freeman
In this beautifully illustrated picture book edition, we explore the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as "colored computers," and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career. https://youtu.be/H1V8NcvSy9Q?feature=shared

CVES Artist in Residence: Science Instruction
Our Foundation funds the Science Artist in Residence Position at Canyon View Elementary School to provide supplemental science instruction to our students. We are looking for someone with a science background who can provide science enrichment lessons to students in grades K-6, starting in December. A teaching credential is not required, but strongly preferred. The program currently runs two days a week, 6 hours/day (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Artist in Residence positions are based on a set number of hours/year. For more information, please contact Principal Edmonston at eedmonston@powayusd.com. Here is what Kate Recore, our previous Science Artist in Residence has to say about this very special position: "I've been at Canyon View for 14 years, as a parent, a volunteer, a foundation president, and a substitute teacher. But, I have never loved the school more than I have as a science teacher. It has been a dream job for me, and I know whoever replaces me will feel the same way."
