February 13, 2024, The State of Michigan allows all 16- and 17-year-old citizens who are Michigan residents to pre-register to vote so that they are automatically registered to vote when they turn 17.5. They will then immediately become eligible to vote in the closest election following their 18th birthday.
Help Your Students Pre-Register: In 2023, Governor Whitmer signed House Bill 4569 into law, which allows future Michigan voters to pre-register to vote when they turn 16 years old.
Here’s how you can help your students pre-register:
● Use the online form - The online form is the easiest way to register and can be done on a computer or mobile device.
● Use the updated paper forms - This form must be completed and returned to your city or township clerk’s office. The pre-registrant can search for their clerk’s office by visiting Michigan.gov/vote.
Important Information:
● Pre-registration applicants must be at least 16 years old but not older than 17 and-a-half years old.
● Individuals can pre-register by including a statement confirming that they are at least 16 years old and have lived in the city or township in which they are applying for pre-registration for at least 30 days.
● Starting in 2024, the Secretary of State and the Michigan Department of Education will provide resources and educational materials to all public schools on how young people can pre-register to vote each year.

WHAT'S UP IN ENGLISH 9?
English 9 completed the novella Animal Farm. They learned about allegory, allusions, and satire, and the universal theme of the corruption in power and the importance of all to remain vigilant of the decisions made by those in power. As a culminating assessment, students created mandala projects, a creative art project that addresses the parts of the novel including characterization, plot, conflict, setting, allegory, and satire. Up next, in the final weeks of English 9, students will be completing a poetry unit that utilizes literary terms they've learned all year.
CONGRATULATIONS ABBY LOMORO!
CONGRATULATIONS FRESHMAN STUDENT OF THE MONTH--GAGE SIRK!
I have two sisters, one being in 7th grade and the other one being 3, 1 brother who just turned 2, 1 doberman and 1 tuxedo cat. I don't really have a favorite teacher because I like them all. I normally do either football or track and in my free time I like to either sleep, or go outside, or spend time with family. After high school I plan on being a welder or an engineer and I am proud to be a WHS Panther.
CONGRATULATIONS FRESHMAN STUDENT OF THE MONTH--VIVIENNE SEXTON!
My brother is a Junior in Watervliet, My Dad works in Indiana as an engineer, My mom works at a daycare and is the Township Clerk of Keeler Township. I don't have a specific favorite teacher since so many have helped me in my school career such as Mrs. Lefor, Mr. Grear, Mrs. Henderson, and Mrs. Zuniga. I participate in the marching band and as of recently Track& Field as a thrower. I like to listen to music, read, and visit my family in my free time. I am not sure what I plan to do after high school, but I know for sure I'd like to go to some higher form of education. I am proud to be a WHS Panther because the people can be welcoming and competitive at the same time and it creates this great environment.
CONGRATULATIONS SOPHOMORE STUDENT OF THE MONTH--GRACE RIPLEY!
I'm fortunate enough to have been blessed with a family that I can rely on. At my mom's house, it's just the two of us & Batman, our cat. My mom is a principal at a small school in Riverside. She models a hard work ethic and encourages me to show up as the best version of myself. My dad is remarried to my "bonus" mom, Amber. I also have a little brother named Dawson who's four. They encourage me to create and maintain strong friendships and to learn as much as I can about everything. My dad has been a professional drummer and in several bands my whole life. Because of that, I grew up loving music too. My favorite teacher is my Biology teacher, Mrs. O'Toole. I love having her as a teacher because she builds individual relationships with each of her students and she's easy to talk to. I appreciate her grading system because she usually grades almost immediately after you've handed in your work and she allows us to re-do assignments. It makes me feel good to walk away knowing my grade directly reflects my effort. My favorite class is Choir with Mrs. Brush. I love having her as a teacher because of her dedication to her classes and the opportunities she provides us with that allow us to explore a music career outside of the classroom. I've built my strongest relationships on a musical foundation, I love being able to connect with others in that way. I've been a Cheerleader on Varsity for 2 years now. In my free time, I like to spend quality time with the people I care about. I love going to the beach, doing artsy things, and singing on the worship team at my church. After high school, I plan to go to college and get my bachelors degree in Mortuary Science. I'm proud to be a WHS Panther because of the way the staff encourages us to get out of our comfort zone and try new things- it usually opens up a whole lot of other opportunities.
CONGRATULATIONS SOPHOMORE STUDENT OF THE MONTH --SOPHIE GREAR!
In my family there’s my dad my mom and my sister my dad works at the school as a math teacher and my mom is an executive director for a company called Moody’s. My favorite teacher is Mrs.Hollandsworth because I’ve been in her class for 6 years and it’s not just a class I’ve learned so much not just about instruments but about leadership, building connections, and just having fun. There’s never a bad mood in that class and no fights and it’s not just the kids Mrs.H does so much more behind the scenes that keeps the class together and that’s why she’s my favorite teacher. I’m in band/marching band and sometimes I take pictures for yearbook. In my free time I like to sleep, playing video games with my friends, and art. After high school I’m gonna go to a community college for social work. I’m proud to be a WHS panther because of our community.

CONGRATULATIONS JUNIOR STUDENT OF THE MONTH--ERICK JIMENEZ!
I have 2 older brothers and 1 older sister, they all have already graduated from high school and are near their end of their time in college. And I still have my support from my parents in my home. I have two favorite teachers, Mr. Hoffman and Mr. Hickman. I like them because their classrooms always felt welcoming and I liked the fact that they had left after I had my time with them. My favorite class is the same from before, Mr. Hickman and Mr. Hoffman. They had best classmates, having many memories from those classrooms. The Sport that I play in is soccer, but I'm planning to take other sports later in my senior year, like track and maybe basketball but probably not. In my free time, I like to do things that are fun to me. For example, playing video games. I am also picking up soccer and things that help with my fitness. After school, things that I would like to do is to do my dream job, content creation, but another thing as my backup job would be to take on a trade/skill or get a career in something with chiropractor. I am proud to be a WHS panther because of memories that I had made and the fact that I have been here since Pre-school.

DECISION DAY MAY 10TH!
Dear Senior Parent:
You are invited to Decision Day 2024!
Decision Day is part of the National College Signing Day initiative, and is focused on recognizing high school seniors for their postsecondary educational plans and encouraging younger students and families to prepare early for postsecondary education/workforce. Decision Day is held annually on or around May 1 and is designed to coincide with the date that most seniors must inform a college of their plans to enroll.
Because of the delay in the FAFSA this year, we postponed our Decision Day celebration to Friday, May 10th at 10 AM in the high school auditorium. The program should take no more than an hour.
This celebration is in the form of a school assembly. All juniors and seniors will be in attendance. All senior families are invited as well. We will be announcing the post secondary plans for all of our seniors, whether that is college, the workforce, or the military.
Decision Day is a celebration of the time, effort, and hard work you and your Senior have put into researching and planning for life after high school. We encourage any and all family members of Seniors to attend. If your Senior has siblings at the middle school and/or high school, they are invited to attend as well.
Please join us on Friday, May 10th at 10 AM in the high school auditorium for this very special and fun event. Enter through the front main doors of the building and check-in at the main office. I look forward to celebrating your Senior at Decision Day 2024!
With Panther Pride,

PLEASE ACCESS CANVAS FOR YOUR CHILD!
We want you accessing your child's Canvas account! Please take the following steps so that you can be checking on his/her grades on a regular basis.
Steps for parents to create a parent Canvas account.
Obtain Student Pairing Code
Sign up for an account through your phone app or on the computer using an email address.
Parents should go to www.watervlietps.org and click on the link "Canvas for Parents" in the middle of the homepage. Here is the direct link: https://www.
canvas-resources. Here you will find the screenshot instructions, a 7 slide presentation and brief videos on navigating the parent portal, checking grades, viewing assignments and accessing teacher feedback.
Students need to create the pairing code for their parents and it is only valid for 7 days.
If you are having difficulty obtaining the student pairing code, teachers have access to this information within their course by going to People and clicking on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and choosing Export Pairing Codes. Again, these pairing codes are only good for 7 days. Quick way for teachers get this code to a parent when communicating with them.
Instructions are online AND shared every Friday in the high school parent newsletter.
Please reach out to us in the high school office if you have questions or concerns about accessing your child's Canvas account. We need and want your support at the high school!
