One More (Final?) Pastoral Note on Faith, Politics, and the Election
With Election Day just days away, many of us are feeling both anxious and exhausted from the long election season. It’s natural to feel the weight of these decisions deeply—our faith means a lot to us, and when we mix it with politics, things can feel especially charged. But as we approach this moment, I have some final thoughts I hope will provide an additional bit of grounding.
During each election cycle, the debate about faith and politics heats up, often creating anxiety, even within our church community. Yet, we don’t face this alone. Our faith has much to say about how we approach the issues before us, and the truths of the gospel can help us respond with grace and understanding. One key reminder is this: politics flows downstream from culture. That means the hearts and minds of people need to change before political changes can take root. Lasting transformation doesn’t begin with political power alone. Instead, it’s our daily lives, our words, and our service to others that reflect Jesus’ love in practical ways and that shape the world more profoundly than any election outcome.
I also want to mention that “Christian values” don’t have one universal definition. When we use that term, we’re often talking about different things. No single candidate or party fully embodies all the values we hold dear. So, our votes often come down to choosing leaders who we believe will help our communities move toward the hopes we hold. Remembering how Jesus approached power can help here: he didn’t use force to compel others or pursue social dominance. He chose service, humility, and love. His path shows us that true power isn’t about control, but about revealing God’s heart through service. That’s something we can model by seeing our neighbors, even those who vote differently, as beloved by God. And just as Jesus welcomed people from every walk of life, we’re called to show grace and love, even when we disagree.
Friends, I encourage you to vote thoughtfully and to endorse those candidates who you believe best reflect your Christian values and hopes for our country. But as you do, remember that God loves those who see things differently just as much as God loves you. The world is watching how we Christians navigate this time; we’re called to be a different kind of witness, one that goes beyond division and shows the fruit of the Spirit—love, patience, gentleness, and kindness. We’re called to respect and listen to one another, avoiding the mockery or divisiveness so often seen in public discourse.
Neither party fully represents the breadth of God’s heart, and our faith can’t fit neatly into one political platform. We may prioritize different issues, but our first allegiance is to Christ, and our identity is in him. Engaging in politics is a part of faithful citizenship, yet no candidate can represent all of God’s concerns for justice, mercy, and righteousness. Christians bring a diverse set of concerns into each election, and that doesn’t have to divide us. Instead, it’s an invitation to offer each other grace and understanding, recognizing that while our political approaches may vary, we’re united in our commitment to serve and reflect Christ.
Finally, let’s keep our focus on the one true King, Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve and to welcome all. In doing so, we’re bearing witness to the gospel in ways that speak louder than words or votes. May we be peacemakers, reaching out to our neighbors, and showing through word and deed a commitment to the love of Christ. This witness will truly shape the world around us for good—well beyond this election cycle.
See you in church!

Sunday's Bible Readings
Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Moses said to the Hebrew people, “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall certainly perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him, for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”Veterans Community Celebration—Sunday, Nov 10, 12PM

Looking ahead to December, we ask you to mark your calendars for an exciting community Christmas concert coming to WPC. Upcoming Sermons from Pastor Adam
Coming Next Week, November 10—"After the Election: Finding Our True Mission"
Next week is going to leave many of us feeling a mixture of emotions, from excitement to frustration. But in the midst of our divided opinions and political loyalties, how do we as a church find our way forward? Join us next Sunday as Pastor Adam explores how Paul and Barnabas handled their own conflicts, and discover how we can stay focused on our true calling and unity in Christ—even in a season of division.
After his sermon series on Faith and Politics, which finishes on November 10, Pastor Adam will be preaching two sermons guided by Bible readings from the Old Testament books of Numbers and Joshua. These will serve as a bridge as we make our way from the heavy election season and walk towards to the (hopefully) much more joyous Advent & Christmas season.
- Sunday, Nov 17, as we sift our way through the fallout of the election season, we’ll be reminded of the popular sentiment that life is a series of choices. Certainly, there’s some truth to that idea, but all of our important choices boil down to voting for either our fear or our faith.
- Sunday, Nov 24, we’ll read from the book of Joshua and be reminded that we spend a lot of life walking in circles, thinking that we are not getting anywhere. But that all depends on our goal. If our goal is to find God, we can't move in a straight line.
Holiday Sermon Series Preview—“Walking to Bethlehem”
During the month of December, Pastor Adam will be sharing a special series of sermons inviting you to join the characters of the nativity in walking to Bethlehem, the place where God became flesh and we are finally at home. For the entire series, we’ll be reading through the Christmas story as it’s told in the Gospel of Luke. Begins Dec. 1st.

2024 Stewardship Campaign—“Entrusted Treasures: God’s Gifts in Our Hands”
We’re pleased to share that our stewardship campaign is progressing well, thanks to the generosity and commitment shown by so many in our church family. Each pledge received reflects the strong spirit of giving within our community and our shared dedication to the future of WPC. If you haven’t yet had the chance to make a pledge, there’s still time to join in! Stewardship packets are available in the atrium, and Sunday’s worship guides will include a pledge card. Completed cards can be placed in the offering bags during Sunday's offering. Thank you for being a vital part of our journey together as we plan for a strong year of ministry in 2025! You can also view all campaign materials and make your pledge online at HERE.
Stewardship Thought for the Week: In 2 Timothy, Paul uses the metaphor of a race to describe his faith journey, reminding us of the commitment it takes to keep moving forward. Just as in a race, there will be days of strength and days of weariness, along with many ordinary days where we simply persevere. While some of us may not be physically running anymore, we all share in the journey of faith as a community that supports one another. As we continue our stewardship campaign, let’s view today as another opportunity to pledge our support for the church. By making these commitments, we honor the treasures we’ve been entrusted with, including our church family and mission. Together, we can keep advancing, trusting that God is with us every step of the way.
Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is underway and you're invited and encouraged to participate. A shoebox of gifts is just the beginning of a faith journey for millions of boys and girls around the world, because inside each shoebox, Samaritans Purse includes a booklet (in the appropriate language) telling the Gospel message of Jesus. Please pick up a shoebox in the atrium today? If you are homebound, please call the church office and a box can be delivered to your home. Boxes need to be returned by Sunday, Nov. 10 so they can begin their journey.
If you choose to pack a box, please read the instructions on "How to Pack a Shoebox." There are detailed lists of good items to pack and items that are to be avoided.
WPC partners with Community Groups by providing rooms and space for folks to gather. All Community Groups have their own unique guidelines/rules/fees for participation. Please contact the groups directly for clarifying questions about involvement.
