Village Explorer Weekly Update

Welcome Village Explorer students and families, to the 2024-25 School Year!

I am humbled and excited to be going into my second year as Principal of Village Elementary! We are going to have an amazing year. Village is a large elementary school with a variety of programs to support our students and provide enriching experiences. This includes visual and performing arts, a STEAM innovation lab, counseling services for military families and a host of student leadership opportunities. You may read my full Principal's Welcome Letter on our school website.

Please read ALL the information in this Family Newsletter below (including information about school arrival and dismissal, schedules, curriculum, student supports, and communication with our school community) so that your student and family are prepared for the upcoming school year.

Our first day of school is Thursday August 22. Bus service from the Cays and Naval Amphibious Base along with optional free breakfast (7:40 AM for students only) will begin the first day of school. Our teachers will greet students in their designated area (see "Getting to and from Village Elementary" section below) between 8:00 and 8:10 AM to escort them to their classrooms.

We are excited to partner with you in nurturing your child's growth and interests this year! We encourage you to join our PTO, volunteer at school, and become a member of our School Site Council and will share more information about these opportunities soon.

We have some new programs and people to introduce!

• Remodeled Office, Interior Courtyard, and Village Hall: You may have noticed a few changes to our physical space. We are very fortunate to have a remodeled Office to provide more efficient service and a quieter atmosphere. Our interior courtyard also includes new walking paths for students and green spaces. Village Hall is equipped with new flooring, fresh paint, and recessed lighting.
• Friday Flagpole Assemblies: Every Friday from 8:15 - 8:30 AM, we will be having a whole school assembly. This assembly will include the Pledge of Allegiance, important announcements and reminders, and celebrations of amazing displays our values across campus.
• Village is implementing a new Social-Emotional Learning curriculum. Leader in Me is a comprehensive SEL program that instills positive character traits in our students and is a framework for maintaining a strong school culture.

Back-to-School Night is on Wednesday, August 28th from 4:00 - 5:15 PM.

Back-to-School Night is an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet teachers, learn about grade-level curricula, and orient to our campus and staff. Our teachers will offer three 20-minute presentations to account for families with siblings. Back-to-School Night is best attended by adults only; however, we understand that not all families have childcare. Children in attendance must remain with you at all times and will not be permitted on playground spaces.

Families should expect to be able to access classroom teacher assignments online after 4PM on Tuesday, August 20th. Thank you for understanding we cannot consider specific teacher and/or change requests.

Coronado Unified School District has an agreement with outside care provider Champions to provide before- and after-care for Village Elementary School students at our school site (note that Champions is an outside contractor using our facilities).

ALL students may access free breakfast and lunch every day. Students bring daily snacks from home.

Although meals will be free for all, the state continues to require school districts to distribute and collect free/reduced meal applications. Free/reduced-price meal applications can be found in our front office.

Free/reduced-price meal applications allow the district to collect essential data needed in order to qualify for additional school funding intended to support academic programs for your student. Additionally, free/reduced eligibility can qualify households for things such as discounted internet services, P-EBT benefits, discounted rates on your energy bill, and more.

Breakfast:

• Free breakfast is optional and provided every day in Village Hall PRIOR TO THE START OF SCHOOL at 7:40 AM for STUDENTS ONLY (families are NOT permitted to accompany their children; school personnel will supervise students).
• Students will enter through Village Hall on H Avenue for breakfast
• Students accessing breakfast should be dropped off/arrive at school at 7:40 AM.
• Breakfast ends at 8:00 AM; students will remain on campus to proceed to grade-level lines/class at 8:05. Students who took the bus will have the ability to get a grab and go breakfast.
• Students MUST take a breakfast if they enter Village Hall for breakfast; they may not accompany friends or "hang out." All students not having breakfast should arrive at 8 AM and enter campus through designated gates.

Snack: Students in TK through 1st grade have a scheduled snack time before or after recess each morning. Students in grades 2 through 5 eat their snacks during morning recess time. Please send your child with a daily healthy snack and refillable water bottle. School does not provide snacks for students.

Lunch: All students may access free lunch in Village Hall Cafeteria during their designated lunch time. Your child will benefit from knowing if they are bringing lunch from home or eating school lunch; please discuss expectations and review menus ahead of time. Families of students with allergies must provide medical information to the health office. We work in collaboration with Child Nutrition to ensure your child accesses only food that is safe and healthy for them.

ONLY STUDENTS ACCESSING the CHAMPIONS CHILDCARE PROGRAM SHOULD BE DROPPED OFF OR ARRIVE TO SCHOOL PRIOR TO 7:40. Village provides supervision on campus at breakfast from 7:40-8 AM and outside at gates from 8:00-8:10 AM.

To assist us with safety and security, we have a School Crossing Guard at the crosswalks on 6th and H and 6th along with 6th and G. Our crossing guard will direct vehicles, pedestrians, and bikes/scooters and your compliance is appreciated. Practicing patience, grace, and feeling a sense of shared responsibility as you drive to and from school will help ensure the safety of ALL.

5th grade Curbside Hosts will assist at arrival in the mornings by opening car doors, greeting, and helping students onto campus.

Your Child Will Arrive to School One of Three Ways/Times:

1. Walking, Biking, Scootering, Driving in Time for Before-School Breakfast: Your child should be dropped off or arrive at school between 7:40 and 7:50 AM for entry to Village Hall for breakfast.
2. Walking, Biking, Scootering, Driving in Time for School: If your child is NOT having breakfast, they should arrive between 8:00 and 8:10 AM to walk through designated grade-level gates and to classroom line-up areas.
3. Via Champions Childcare If your child is enrolled in before- and/or after-school care with Champions, your child will be escorted to and from campus/class by childcare personnel.

School Arrival Locations and Protocols: Students who do not access breakfast before school will enter campus through the following gates between 8:00 and 8:10 AM:

• Preschool: Gate between Village Hall and Upper Playground on H Avenue
• TK-1st Grade: Lower Playground Gate on 6th street
• 2nd Grade: Gate on the corner of H avenue and 6th Street
• 3rd Grade: Lower Playground Gate on 6th street
• 4th Grade: Gate between Village Hall and Upper Playground on H Avenue
• 5th Grade: Gate on the corner of H avenue and 6th Street

• Gates close at 8:10 AM; students who arrive after 8:10 will check in at the office.
• We know that working and busy family schedules create challenges, but please DO NOT drop off children prior to 7:40 AM for breakfast or prior to 8:00 AM if they are not accessing breakfast. Students who arrive prior to 8AM will join breakfast service.
• DO NOT TURN OFF OR LEAVE YOUR CAR in the drop-off line. PARK YOUR CAR if you wish to walk your child to campus/gates.

School Dismissal Locations and Protocols:

• TK students will dismiss at 2:15 PM from the lower playground gate on 6th Street.
• Kindergarteners will be at their gate for dismissal five minutes earlier than other grades (2:50 PM MTTHF and 1:35 on Wednesdays)
• Students 1-5 will dismiss from the same gates as arrival at 2:55 PM
• The District School Bus will pick up students right after dismissal at 2:55 PM along the curb in front of school.
• Parents of students in grades TK through 2nd must park and meet students/teachers IN PERSON
• Students in Grades K-5 Dismiss at 1:40 EVERY WEDNESDAY.

Walking/Biking/Scootering:

• Please follow the safest and most direct route to and from school (using crosswalks!) and follow directions of the school crossing guard.
• Safety helmets are required for biking/scootering/skating to school.
  
• Bikes/scooters/skateboards should always be locked at the racks adjacent to staff parking; bikes, scooters, and skateboards are not permitted on campus.

IN CASE OF RAIN OR INCLEMENT WEATHER, students will enter gates and report directly to classrooms between 8:00 and 8:10.

Pets/dogs are not permitted on school grounds for reasons of health and safety, unless they are part of a prearranged instructional program. Families who walk dogs to school must remain with their (leashed) pet outside on the sidewalk.

Coronado Unified School District's Learning Focus is Academic Discourse, and across disciplines and in their speaking and writing, students will practice critical questioning, dynamic dialogue with peers, supporting arguments with evidence, and more.

Our district provides Chromebooks for all students in grades 1-5. Classroom teachers will explain when these devices stay at school and when they travel home and back. We recommend families consider purchasing an optional Mobile Device Protection Plan to cover accidental damage of district devices.

Your child in grades K-5 can expect to have the following adults guiding learning this year:

• One main grade-level classroom teacher
• A guided-reading group teacher (classroom teacher, Reading Specialist, or Academic Support and Enrichment teacher)
• PE Coaches
• Innovation Lab Teacher
• Visual and Performing Arts Teacher
• Weekly Spanish Teacher
• Education Specialist/Case Manager (for students with IEPs)
• Campus Supervisors and Instructional Assistants for support at recess, lunch, and in classrooms
• Our Clinical Counselor will visit classrooms and provide lessons on topics such as emotional regulation, problem solving, and relationship building.

Our school Crew also includes Principal, Vice Principal, Program Specialist, School Psychologist, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and the support of a Military Family Life Counselor on site, along with office, health, nutrition, and custodial teammates!

Coronado Unified School District has adopted curricula for our elementary schools to both challenge and support students with a variety of strengths and needs:

• All grades set aside time for Leader in Me Lessons and which strengthen self awareness, emotional self regulation, and relationship building and maintenance.
• Our Physical Education and recess programs are enriched by Spark lessons and Playworks approaches to collaboration and problem solving.
• Bridges math includes exciting opportunities for students to talk about patterns and puzzles in math and apply concepts to games and real-world scenarios.
• Benchmark English Language Arts curriculum is a balanced approach to reading, writing, and grammar. Our students benefit from placement in small reading groups with students at similar levels to challenge and grow their decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.
• Our classroom teachers expose students to hands-on experiences through Foss Science. In our Innovation Lab class enriched by Project Lead the Way curriculum, students practice engineering processes of design and construction, as well as coding and programming.
• Students will experience social studies this year through TCI curriculum, which helps students understand communities local and global and their places in them.

Students' progress will be assessed throughout the year in English Language Arts and math, and students in grades 3-5 will participate in state testing in May. Family conferences and progress reports will be available for all students in late October; in the Spring, progress reports and conferences are offered to students who are approaching standards in one or more areas. Semester report cards are issued in January and June.

Please Bring to School:

• Curiosity, belief in oneself, and a willingness to grow and make friends :)
• Closed-toe shoes and clothing which allows for active movement on fields and playground. We discourage our students from wearing CROCs (or similar), as they are not conducive to safe running and active play at recess and PE.
• A jacket or sweatshirt. Students should be prepared for fluctuations in temperature.
• A hat for sun safety at recess and lunch. Children are encouraged to bring their own sunscreen to apply as well.
• Healthy snacks for morning recess
• A refillable water bottle. Our school has water filling stations!
• Lunch if your child is not accessing free school lunch or has a robust appetite.
• School supplies, assignments, reading books, and devices per teacher request/instruction. Suggested/optional school supply lists for each grade level are available in the front office.

Please Do Not Bring to School:

• Toys, games, stuffed animals, blankets, etc. unless prompted by the teacher or for special events (toys and beloved items may be distracting in class and are often lost). We have alternative recess stations where students may choose to play with games or toys or draw/read during recess. Pokemon cards and similar "trading" items are not permitted on campus during school hours.
• Soda and candy
• Personal Electronics: Students are not permitted to bring personal electronic games or iPads/tablets/computers, and all other electronic devices (phones/watches) are discouraged and we do not take accountability for them on campus. Students whose families send them to school with communication devices such as phones or watches are advised that students must place these items in a designated secure location in the classroom during the school day and may not use them during school hours. Students requesting to communicate with their families before, during, and after the school day may visit the front office for assistance.
• Bikes, Scooters, and Skates/Skateboards may be used for transportation to school, but not brought into classrooms. Please lock them on the bike racks next to the arrival and dismissal gates.
• Sports Equipment: Students with practices after school may need to bring sports equipment to be left in a safe space on campus during school hours. Students may not play with equipment near campus during drop-off or dismissal.
• Pets and Animals: We love furry friends! But for health and safety reasons, families who walk with pets to school are asked NOT to bring them on to campus.

Village Elementary School will communicate with you in the following ways:

• Weekly Family Newsletter emailed from Principal Peter Kuhns (also posted to the website) with news, events, and calendar updates.
• Classroom Teacher Newsletter, Learning Updates: weekly/dependent on grade level. Our teachers will be using a new Learning Management System called Canvas this year--stay tuned for more information!
• Mid-semester conferences and progress reports are for ALL students in the fall, followed by January report cards. Mid-semester progress reports in the spring are for students approaching standard in one or more areas. Final report cards are distributed on the last day of school in June.
• Phone call or email from office personnel (as appropriate) in case of student concerns
• All-school email or text in case of campus event or emergency

We have developed Explorer Community Agreements "Explorer 4"for students, and staff to emphasize shared responsibility for our positive and supportive learning environment and centered on SAFETY, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, and KINDNESS.

At Village Elementary School, we practice an ethos of "seek first to understand (and then be understood)." This philosophy promotes a culture of inquiry and curiosity when a member of our school community feels confused, puzzled, or frustrated by something which has occurred or has been said. This approach discourages making assumptions or "jumping to conclusions." Ways of opening dialogue to better understand others and incidents include:

• "I am confused about why..."
• "Can you please explain more about..."
• "I noticed ___ and would like to understand..."
• "My child reported hearing ___, can you please provide additional context/details?"
• "We noticed your child has been feeling/behaving ___...are there factors or circumstances which may be affecting him/her?"
• "How are you feeling?" "What is your perspective?" "How can I/we help this situation?"

We encourage direct and respectful communication. Questions related to learning and the classroom should be directed to the teacher first (instructional assistants or aides may not share information about students' academic or behavioral progress except in collaboration with the teacher) . Classroom teachers may communicate on behalf of or in collaboration with other adults (PE/Specials teachers, supervisors) who work with your child. The principal and/or counselor will partner with families of students who required support or interventions at school. Heard a rumor? Don't hesitate to call us and ask!

We understand that behavior is a form of communication and seek to understand the context of students' emotions and behaviors and support them accordingly. We encourage problem-solving, accountability, restorative practices, and appropriate and meaningful interventions. You can support your child's enthusiasm for school and learning by:

• Talking positively about school every day and modeling optimism
• Asking about daily triumphs, kindnesses, and "aha"s ("What was awesome today?")
• Celebrating effort and growth (vs. expecting perfection)
• Emphasizing a growth mindset
• Encouraging problem solving when your child faces setbacks or dilemmas
• Seeking to understand more when your child reports a problem
• Collaborating with school personnel in support of your child

Health Office/Medications:

If your child will require medication at school, please remember to bring in medication authorization forms, (see attached link for specific forms and information) and medications on 8/20 and 8/21. Thank you for bringing your child's authorization forms and medications prior to the 1st day in order to help us prepare for a smooth transition and the 1st day of school.

Care Solace

Our district has partnered with Care Solace to help staff, students, and their families quickly connect to verified mental health and substance use treatment providers in our community. Our counselors can help connect you directly to their support, you can call them at 888-515-0595, or search anonymously at www.caresolace.com/coronadousd.

Their Care Companion team is available 24/7/365 and can support you in any language. Your Care Companion will make phone calls on your behalf to find and book appointments with providers who are matched to your needs. Care Solace has access to thousands of providers or programs that work with all insurances, Medicaid, or offer sliding scale or private payment options. We encourage healthy school community members to attend school regularly, and on time.

Please report your child's absence as soon as you are aware by:

• You may alert your child's teacher about absences, but absences MUST be reported to the office first.

We understand that individual and family circumstances may affect attendance and encourage honesty about why your child is missing school so that we may provide support and help sustain academic progress. Please do your very best to schedule trips and appointments for days we are not in school.

Student Safety--physical as well as social-emotional--is at the center of our work with children at Village Elementary School. We are committed to ongoing efforts to maintain and increase student health and safety in the following areas:

• Social-emotional well-being, through implementation of Leader in Me curriculum and recess programming designed to encourage students to be safe and responsible with their bodies and words, as well as to identify, regulate, and communicate feelings and emotions and interact with others safely.
• Physical Health and Nutrition, through our Universal Breakfast and Lunch for All programs with healthy meal options every day, encouragement of mid-morning snacks and frequent hydration, and our PE and Recess programs, which encourage exercise and safe and creative play.
• Our Physical Plant, through a safe and secure campus and clean and well-maintained facilities and equipment.

Campus Safety and Security: Facts and Plans in Progress

• Village Elementary School does not permit entrance to our campus of any individual who is not staff, cleared substitute personnel, parents or family members with ID, or registered and screened volunteers. All visitors who are not CUSD staff must submit their IDs for clearance through our Raptor System in the office before entering our campus.
• Village's gates to the school campus open to students each day, with supervision by Village staff, at 8:00 AM.
• Our gates are closed and locked to the outside at 8:10 AM. Students who enter campus after 8:10 AM must enter and check in through our Front Office.
• Our most fundamental responsibility to ensure students are safe and on campus throughout the school day is proper supervision of our students. We are committed to providing staffing and supervision to ensure student safety and continuously adjust our practices to improve them.
• We have security cameras installed on campus for surveillance of points of entry and exit and are conducting an audit to expand their scope and reach.

Our annual safety drills begin in September with a campus-wide fire drill, followed by monthly drills (earthquake, lockdown, fire).

We love having volunteers on campus! Your presence enriches the educational program, increases supervision of students and contributes to school safety while strengthening our schools’ relationships with our community.

If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please send or drop off required documents to the Human Resources Department of the district office or human.resources@coronadousd.net.

To become a volunteer the following procedures and documents must be completed. You can access these documents simply by clicking the links below.

• Live Scan of Fingerprints (FBI and DOJ) - required ONLY if volunteering with children NOT within sight of a teacher

We always welcome help for our school in any capacity! If you are looking to assist this year, we currently need:

• Campus Assistant
• This person assists with supervising students in the cafeteria. This is a paid position with the working hours of 10:45 AM - 1:15 PM.
• Members for our School Site Council
• This committee reviews and provides input our our school safety plan, how we meet the needs of our English Learners, and Site Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA).
• Our meeting dates are September 24th, January 28th, and April 29th from 3:15 - 4:15 PM.
• Everyone a Reader Volunteers
• These volunteers read with our lower elementary students and assist with their developing reading skills.

Village Elementary School is SO fortunate to have the full-time services of our very own MFLC (Military Family Life Counselors)! Our MFLC is available to help students through the emotions and transitions associated with military life.

Hi Military Families -

With wildfires burning and hurricanes hitting across the US, this is the perfect time to count your blessings and refresh (or create) an emergency plan for your family. Check out: https://www.ready.navy.mil/

Also, sometimes with the start of school parents and children may feel anxious, excited, worried, nervous, and stressed in anticipation. FOCUS (Families OverComing Under Stress) is available to teach families how to manage their emotions, set goals, and strategize around challenges that may arise. See the attached flyer for more information about their 6-8 session in-person or Zoom modules, as well as some helpful “Back to School Self-Care Ideas.”

To families part of Coronado Unified School District, just over one week remains of summer break – enjoy every minute! And remember:

• Back-to-School Ice Cream Social for New CUSD Families - Tuesday, August 20, 3-5 pm, 201 Sixth Street (flyer attached) Start the school year off by getting to know your area military and civilian community resources while meeting other new families and school administrators. All TK-12th grade families new to Coronado Unified School District are welcome to attend.
