OVS High School Retake Procedures
Please review the below procedures regarding retakes of formative assessments.
This procedure is to ensure learners are not just progressing through the content, but truly becoming proficient in the standards covered in our courses. This aligns with Omaha Virtual School’s mastery-based learning practices and enacts our program’s core value of growth mindset.
As stated in the OVS Student Handbook, learners can redo/revise work until the end of the semester, as our program’s goal is for learners to demonstrate mastery of state standards. Below is the procedure that may occur in OVS High courses for formative assessments (quizzes, discussion board posts, lesson checkpoints, etc), unless otherwise posted in the course syllabus.
Learners who do not achieve their desired score on an assessment and/or do not demonstrate mastery can re-take the assessment once they have demonstrated evidence of re-learning the content that they missed on the initial assessment.
- The learner will provide evidence of re-learning by:Correcting the first attempt in the assessment and providing a justification of the correction answer. Cite where the answer was found within K12.
Email a screenshot of the corrected attempt, justification, and the source within K12 to the learning facilitator. Why: This demonstrates that the learner understands why the initial attempt was missed and went back to read and review content within K12 and not searched elsewhere for an answer.
At this point, the learner may re-take the initial assessment or points will be added to the initial assessment and the learner can move on to the next assessment in the course. This depends on the nature of the original assessment and learning facilitator discretion.
Notes: One way to find your learner’s first attempt is under progress, quizzes, and the name of the exact assignment they were wanting to retake.

Week in Review:
This week moved too quickly for all of us. Students focused on getting caught up on their coursework and understanding expectations of upcoming assignments. Physical Science students had quite the course load last week. Learning Coaches and students should always keep in mind the pacing guide for all courses. High School Students must earn a passing grade by the end of the semester (December 21st) in order to earn a credit for the course. Please continue to reach out as needed, these clarifications have proven very successful for students.
Looking Ahead:
Our courses have truly taken shape and students are in the "grit" of it. Topics covered will build off of previous units, so it is important for students to attain mastery (63%) on each assessment. This upcoming week at the learning center I will be specifically addressing students that have not attained mastery. This week is another short week, so learning coaches and students should always keep in mind the pacing guide for all courses.
Weekly Online Lessons:
Online lessons have already begun. The schedule for my regular online lessons is below.
- Earth Science: 2nd Monday of the month 10:15-11:15
- Physical Science: Wednesdays OR Fridays 10:15-11:15 (each student in this course was assigned a specific session)
- Biology: Wednesdays OR Fridays 11:30-12:30 (each student in this course was assigned a specific session)
Mr. Gamble's Updates
Week in Review:
Thank you to those learners and coaches for your understanding while I wasn’t present on Wednesday and Thursday. I was at a district math training to better our instruction. If there are questions or needs please reach out to me and I will respond as soon as possible.
Online lessons are in full swing. I know Thursday’s group has not gotten on yet and I apologize. Our schedule has been a little wild during the beginning of this year. Please understand that online lessons are required unless “Optional” is listed on the lesson for your learner. We’ve been missing a lot of “Required” learners.
Looking Ahead:
We will continue our “fluid” instruction as I will focus each face-to-face time toward your learner’s lesson/topic they are currently on. This allows for focused instruction that is valuable to their growth.
Should your learner have a question or struggle, please encourage them to reach out to us. If they are reserved, then please email the appropriate teacher and we will make note of that need and address it. We are a team and encourage all parties (facilitator, coach, and learner) to communicate.
I am looking to create an online PIT Stop time for High School students on Friday mornings. This would be for those that need assistance. Look for posting and communication once we get that set up.
Resources:
There are countless resources on the internet for math. Throughout the year I will post some here that could assist your learner or yourself. Learning coaches can use these to check the work of a learner or preview topics.
This week’s resource can be effective for all courses. Desmos provides a free graphing calculator that is helpful for verifying or graphing equations, expressions, and inequalities. It can be used to show graphs if equations in assignments or to check the work of a learner.
Weekly Online Math Lessons:
Most online sessions will not last the entire block of time, unless needed for individual help. We will work in mini-lessons addressing specific needs. If “Required” is listed on the session, you must attend that session. If “Optional” is listed, you do not have to attend, but CAN attend if you’d like help or a review.
