Social and Emotional Wellness
Life is Messy! Are you calm or stressed out?
Keeping stress under control will improve all aspects of your health.
Stress:
Both positive and negative events can cause stress. Can you remember the last time you were really nervous? You may have had symptoms like sweaty palms, a racing heartbeat, and an upset stomach. These examples of symptoms are normal responses to stress which is the body’s response to real or imagined dangers or life events.
Stress is a normal part of life and it is not always harmful. A little bit of stress can motivate you to work hard and do your best. But, when you have too much stress or the stress lasts too long, it can cause health problems such as headaches, irritability, or trouble sleeping.
Anything that causes stress is a stressor. An event that may be stressful for you may not be for your friend. Long-term stress can damage your physical, mental/emotional, and social health.
The body’s way of responding to threats is the fight-or-flight response. When you meet a stressor, your brain signals your body to begin producing adrenaline which is a hormone that increases the level of sugar in the blood, giving your body extra energy. The release of adrenaline triggers a process that affects almost your entire body.
