A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear PES families,
We have had an excellent week at school! On Monday, we had John Meader from Northern Stars Planetarium bring his super dome to PES for a total of four shows. First graders from Dike Newell were able to visit the planetarium as well. Students were delighted to climb through a tunnel to enter the planetarium dome, where they learned facts about the planets and stars that adorn our skies.
A shout out to Phippsburg’s PTA, for purchasing 12 new sleds for our sledding hill. Our students have enjoyed a full week of sledding with some fresh snow on Wednesday.
Celebrations from the classrooms! 🎆🎇
Second graders have been learning the art of square dancing in music class with Mrs. Reed. This is a great opportunity for students to learn music and movement together. It has been fun to watch students delight in the traditional allure of square dancing. This week, second graders also earned a whole class pajama day on Tuesday for demonstrating responsible, respectful, safe and kind behavior in the classroom.
Third graders have started poetry writing this week in class. This descriptive writing unit asks students to pick a person in their life and use figurative language and sensory details to describe that person through poetry.
Last week, fourth graders traveled to the Maine Maritime Museum for a visit. Fourth graders had the opportunity to learn about the rich history and culture of the Wabanaki people. They also explored many of the traditions and stories of Maine’s Indigenous communities.
In library classes, students are learning about the Chinese Lunar New Year! Lunar New Year was on January 29th. Students read How to Catch a Dragon, Happy Chinese New Year, a counting book, and How to Dragon. The Lunar New Year is a tradition based on the lunar calendar. The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the year according to the lunar calendar. 2025 is the year of the snake. To learn more about the Lunar New Year, follow THIS link!
Winter Kids! ⛷️
We are on week 3 of our winter kids adventure. This week, students are focusing on noticing the world around them outside through art and journaling. The prize for this week’s learning is a pair of cool sunglasses. We encourage students to get outside during winter and notice the changes the season places on living and nonliving elements in nature.
SEL Learning!
We are continuing to learn about self awareness and self management. Students in grades K-2 will be reading A Little Spot of Feelings Emotion Detective and creating selfie sticks, which will help students recognize what their body language and facial expressions tell about how they are feeling. Students in grades 3-5 will be playing a self awareness board game. Our SEL learning will connect with an upcoming school wide campaign in February, where students learn to fill one another’s “buckets” with kindness. 📖🔍 A Little Spot of Feelings - Emotion Detective By Diane Alber READ ALOUD
Thank you for all you do to support our school community!
Warm regards,
Nina Willette, Principal
