OVERVIEW OF JAN REYNOLDS' PRESENTATION TO 3RD - 6TH GRADERS
Many classroom groups spent 45 minutes to an hour with children's author Jan Reynolds on Wednesday morning. She came to the large gym with a slide and audio show of stories of indigenous cultures from around the world. Over the course of her lifetime, Jan has traveled to all the continents of the planet to record the stories of people living in traditional ways. She did a compelling job of showing what it would be like to live in the Sahara, Mongolia, or Amazon (and other places) if you were a child in the local cultures of those regions. She showed examples of their housing, food, educational experiences, transport methods, celebrations and their art. Her pictures, experiences and stories were inspiring to hear and see because they showed the diversity, similarities and resilience of peoples from around the globe.
Becky Manahan, the St. Albans Free Library director, was in attendance with a table of library books and an invitation to come and read about world cultures and more at our community library. Ms. Levine hosted the visit from Ms. Reynolds and also hopes that students will find the library at City School to be an inviting place to learn about the world and its' many peoples. The books shown in the picture below can be found in our school library.

BERRY SONG
On an island at the edge of a wide, wild sea, a girl and her grandmother gather gifts from the earth. Salmon from the stream, herring eggs from the ocean, and in the forest, a world of berries.
Salmonberry, Cloudberry, Blueberry, Nagoonberry.
Huckleberry, Snowberry, Strawberry, Crowberry.
Through the seasons, they sing to the land as the land sings to them. Brimming with joy and gratitude, in every step of their journey, they forge a deeper kinship with both the earth and the generations that came before, joining in the song that connects us all. Michaela Goade's luminous rendering of water and forest, berries and jams glows with her love of the land and offers an invitation to readers to deepen their own relationship with the earth.
