Week of October 4th, 2021
Principal's Message
This past Friday we had out first fire drill of the year in cooperation with the Downers Grove Fire Department. Our students did an incredible job calmly and quickly exiting the building. They listened to their teachers and took the drill seriously. As a staff we were very grateful for their attentiveness to this drill!
BIKE RACKS: Based on feedback and assessing the physical space that we had, we have relocated two bike racks from the front of the building to the side. Students should be locking their bike to one of the three bike racks near the campus entrance on Middaugh. Herrick is not responsible for bikes that are not locked and properly secured to the bike rack. Students should be lock their bikes in a manner that the front wheel and frame are secured to the bike rack.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR: As you know, earlier this year we solicited your support in helping us prevent TikTok challenges in our school building. We have since learned that there is a different 'challenge' per month. These challenges range from vandalizing school signs and school property to physically striking staff members. Please continue to speak with your student and reinforce the expectations we share about being an active and respectful member of our school community. The purpose of this communication is to be proactive and make you aware of what is out there on social media. We will continue to remind students of our Spartan PRIDE expectations and together we can continue to have a positive school year.
VOLUNTARY COVID TESTING SIGN-UP: District 58 encourages families to consider signing up for free PCR COVID-19 testing for District 58 students. Registration for this optional testing program is open and our program is actively underway.
Families can select from any or all of three types of testing services including:
Weekly screening testing (routine testing)
Symptomatic testing (testing when a student or staff member develops symptoms at school)
Test-to-Stay (testing for situations in which a student has been identified as a close contact)
Test-to-Stay, an IDPH-endorsed process that allows a close contact to remain in school with regular antigen testing, will begin next week. Please see the district communication regarding the IDPH's guidance regarding when Test-to-Stay can be implemented in schools.
CHESS CLUB: Do you want to risk your rooks, play your pawns, bash your bishops, and control an entire wooden army of powerful figures? If you answer yes, join the HMS Chess Club, today! Whether you are new to chess and just learning, good at chess and looking for a worthy opponent, or in-between, all are welcome!
