March 21, 2024 -- Eleven Columbus City Schools have been honored by the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce and Director Stephen Dackin for their exceptional progress and student growth on the latest Ohio State Report Card.
These schools are among 310 statewide, including 38 in Franklin County, to receive the prestigious Momentum Award this week. The Momentum Award recognizes districts and school buildings that have exceeded expectations by demonstrating outstanding achievement improvement while continuing to show student growth throughout the year.
The awarded schools are:
- Binns Elementary
- Cedarwood Alternative Elementary
- Columbus Africentric Early College Elementary
- Como Elementary
- Huy/A.G. Bell Elementary
- Indian Springs Elementary
- Northgate Intermediate
- South Mifflin STEM Academy (K-8)
- Valleyview Elementary
- Westgate Elementary
- Woodward Park Middle School
"I'm proud that these schools are being recognized for the hard work they do every day to improve student outcomes,” said Columbus City Schools Superintendent/CEO Dr. Angela Chapman. “Demonstrating year-to-year growth instills pride and determination in our academic community as we pursue excellence. Their commitment to continuous improvement serves as a beacon of inspiration among their peers statewide, encouraging us all to strive for more outstanding excellence in our educational pursuits."
Districts and buildings earn the Momentum Award by improving their performance index by three or more points from the 2021-2022 report card to the 2022-2023 report card and achieving a value-added progress rating of 4 or more stars. It's important to note that districts and buildings are not eligible for this award if they have received an overall rating of 5 stars.
Dr. Corey D. Grubbs, Columbus City Schools Chief of Transformation and Leadership, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are thrilled to see tangible proof that our endeavors to enhance school standards are yielding results, showcasing the remarkable strides our students are taking in their learning journey. This achievement is a testament to our students, faculty, administrators, and families' relentless dedication and effort. It's a monumental milestone, underscoring our collective commitment to excellence."
Please visit the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce website for a complete list of districts and schools across Ohio that have received these honors.

Superintendent’s Spotlight Message
Dear CCS Community,
Spring has arrived! The world is becoming reborn with a fresh sense of possibility and renewal. This awakening in nature echoes the spirit of National Women's History Month, dedicated to recognizing and empowering women who, like the new buds of spring, bring fresh perspectives and life to our world.
Keilah Brewster stands out in this season of renewal as she cultivates young minds at Columbus Africentric Early College, embodying the transformative power of education and leadership.
Ms. Brewster, a proud alumna of Africentric, embodies what it means to come full circle—from student to teacher, influencing the same halls that once nurtured her dreams. Her education journey is sparked by a lifelong desire to help others, coupled with the inspiration she drew from her English teachers at Africentric. These educators showed her the boundless possibilities of teaching, igniting a fire within her to pursue a career where she could impact lives through literature and discussion.
In her classroom, Ms. Brewster ensures the voices and stories of women are front and center, particularly highlighting female authors like Jacqueline Woodson and Angela Johnson. Her approach to teaching is profoundly personal and reflective of her experiences, enabling her to forge meaningful connections with her students. She navigates discussions on race, gender, and identity easily and intentionally, encouraging an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and understood.
Ms. Brewster's influence extends beyond the academic; she serves as a mentor and safe space for young women, guiding them through life's challenges and encouraging them to pursue their passions relentlessly. Her message to her students is clear: stay true to yourself, embrace your identity, and never underestimate the power of resilience and self-expression.
As we celebrate National Women's History Month, let us draw inspiration from Ms. Brewster's journey and commitment to uplifting the next generation. Her story confirms the impact one individual can have on many lives, reminding us of our role in shaping a more inclusive and empowering future.
Sincerely,
Dr. Angela Chapman

The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program provides housing assistance for very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled, allowing them to live in safe, quality affordable housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses or apartments in neighborhoods of their choice. Participants are free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and are not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects.
A family that is issued a voucher is responsible for finding a suitable unit where the owner agrees to rent under the HCV program. The suitable unit may even include the family's present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the PHA.
A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by CMHA on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.

Flu Season – What you Need to Know
Influenza, also known as the flu, is an illness caused by a virus that is contagious and easily spread from person to person. Different types (strains) of the flu virus cause illnesses each year.
How does the flu spread?
· Breathing in air from an infected person who coughs, sneezes or laughs less than three feet away.
· Touching your mouth, nose or eyes after you touch something that an infected person touched, sneezed or coughed on. Germs can live for up to two days on hard surfaces (toys, tables, phones, doorknobs, etc.).
· An infected person can infect others before they know they’re sick and for at least a week after getting sick.
What are the symptoms of the flu?
Common symptoms include:
· Fever or chills
· Head, muscle and body aches
· Sore throat and cough
· Diarrhea or vomiting
· Weakness and tiredness
· Runny or stuffy nose
How to prevent the flu?
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
· Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for 15 to 20 seconds and wipe down hard surfaces that may have germs on them.
· Stay away from people who are sick and keep your child at home if they’re sick.
· Practice good health habits to keep your immune system strong.
The Flu Vaccine
· The best way to help prevent the flu and keep you and your family healthy is to get the flu vaccine. Anyone 6 months of age and older should get the flu vaccine each year.
· Minor aches and a low-grade fever are common after getting the vaccine.
If your child still needs their flu shot, it’s not too late! The flu shot is offered in all our Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s school-based health centers to all students and their siblings. Call (614) 355-2590, option 3, to schedule an appointment or visit NationwideChildrens.org/Care-Connection to find a location.

Parent Engagement Opportunity's in Schools
Parental involvement during the elementary years is vital in helping children attain academic success. Parent involvement tends to peak while the children are in the elementary school. The research also shows that the earlier parental involvement begins in a child's educational process, the more powerful the effects will be. Educators frequently point out the critical role of the home and family environment in determining a child's school success. It appears that the earlier this influence is instilled, the greater the likelihood of higher student achievement. There appears to be a relationship between the age of the child and the forms of parental involvement. Greater efforts to involve parents are seen at the preschool and primary levels. Efforts here focus on assisting in the classroom and reading to children at home.
Parental involvement at the elementary level requires work, dedication, and commitment from all parties involved. While some parents of grade-school level students may feel that "involvement" stops at bringing the children to and from school, those parents who immerse themselves in their child's education know that they must go much further. At the elementary level, using learning activities in the home helps promote academic skills. Students at this age level need the constant reinforcement of rudimentary skills to promote higher learning. Although children spend the bulk of their day at school learning to read and conceptualizing their thoughts with their teacher, learning should go beyond the classroom.
Knowing that parent involvement is vital to student success, Northgate Intermediate works with a school ’s Family Ambassador (formally known as Parent Consultant) in the building to improve parent involvement. The Family Ambassador’s main goals are to work collaboratively with other parents, principal, counselor and staff to develop parent engagement activities as well as being a liaison for you (the parent) to communicate strategies and ideas to improve the overall climate of the school. Ms. Skipper (Northgate’s Family Ambassador) is at the building Tuesday-Thursday and can be reached at 614-365-8815 if you have ideas, questions or concerns.

Please feel free to contact me at (614) 365-8815 or sskipper@columbus.k12.oh.us if you have any questions. If you would like to stay informed with what's happening at Northgate, please be sure to stay connected with our Smore Newsletter that is generated through Class Dojo and the Parent letter that is posted every Sunday from Mr. Jones.
I am looking forward to you becoming a part of our family here at Northgate this 2023-2024 academic year.
Warmly,
