Senior Seminar Speaker
Note: Dryden High School seniors have the opportunity to take Senior Seminar, a class offered for the eighth year in a row in conjunction with the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN).
MCAN's mission is to increase college readiness, participation, and completion in Michigan, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students, and students of color. Further, the goal of the College Planning Course is to increase college completion by lowering barriers that prevent students from getting to and through college, including Social Capital, Academic Preparation, College Knowledge, and Affordability. College is defined as the attainment of education beyond high school, including postsecondary certificates and academic degrees.
Weekly guest speaker topics may range from specific educational opportunities to post-secondary life skills as well as the knowledge necessary to be productive members of a community, among others.
Oakland University
On October 27, 2023, we had a speaker from Oakland University present to our class. Jessie Gutierrez-Arredondo is an alumnus of Oakland University and currently works there. She made valid points on why Oakland University was a good school to go to. She said that there are many different opportunities, sports, and clubs you can join, and how Oakland stands out from other schools. I enjoyed this presentation a lot because I am very interested in this school and have already toured some of it went to a Women's Basketball game, and am planning on going to another game.
Some opportunities she stated were all the different majors. You can choose from 130 undergraduate programs in the categories of arts and sciences, health sciences, music, theatre, dance, and many more. Scholarships and financial aid is a huge opportunity at this school. You can get up to $25,000 in housing grants, the Platinum Presidential Scholar award is $48,000 for four years if you qualify for this scholarship. There are lots of scholarships available for all different qualifications.
Oakland University is a Division One Horizon league for sports. Unfortunately, the founder of Oakland was a woman who didn’t believe in contact sports so she did not want there to be a football team for Oakland. Although, there is a football club team and many other club teams people can join for extracurricular activities. Oakland University basketball, volleyball, and track and field are very popular. Something I found interesting was if you wanted to start a different club or your own you could if approved.
Oakland University stands out from other schools because as a Freshman you can have your car on campus. You are not required to live on campus any year you are in Oakland you can commute. It is cheaper to commute, but if you don’t there is lots of funding available for housing.
Although, they are Horizon League they have made it further in some sports making them stand out even more. Oakland is in a very popular area, Rochester. It is very nice and Oakland is under construction adding more buildings and dorms to the campus.
After this presentation by Jessie, it convinced me to want to go to Oakland even more. It is close to home, I can see my family and friends a lot and it's where my father went. Learning all this information made me excited for the future. I hope it is at Oakland University!!
