Magyar's Message Jan. 12, 2024
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS families,
The New Year is already off to a great start as we wind down the first semester in our schools. It’s also hard to believe that we are already planning for next school year as our eighth-graders (Class of 2028) heard presentations this week from our high school administrators and counselors regarding planning and scheduling for their freshman year.
This weekend we are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the 1994 State Championship for our Girls Basketball team. The team finished the historic season with a 27-0 record. Come out and cheer on our current Shoregals and our championship team tomorrow, January 13. A special recognition ceremony will take place during halftime of the varsity game against Olmsted Falls (game begins at 12:30 p.m.) at ALHS.
Congratulations to ALHS senior swimmer, Olivia “Liv” Slivinski, who will be receiving the 2023 Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine Courage Award from Greater Cleveland Sports Commission January 23 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
Liv had suffered three major injuries over a two-and-a-half-year period, tearing her right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a lacrosse game in 2021 and tearing her left ACL in 2022 while also dislocating her right shoulder that same year. As a result of her injuries, Liv underwent five procedures at the Clinic and went through 140 rehabilitation sessions through the course of her recovery. With the help of doctors, physical therapists and psychologists at the Clinic, Liv was able to overcome her challenges with perseverance, courage and a smile on her face. She is currently swimming without restrictions and is competing this season. For more information on Liv’s journey of courage, click here. Liv's mother, Nicole Slivinski, is an Intervention Specialist at Westview Elementary School.
The ALCS Board of Education kicked off the new year with an Organizational Meeting January 9 and the official swearing in of new member Gail Soinski Opaskar. The members also elected Jim Stobe to serve as Board President and Mike Sherban to serve as Board Vice President. Thank you to all of our Board members for preparing today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders.
Reminder, our Board of Education meetings will now take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. The next meeting is February 20. The Board will not meet in July. School boards are not required to meet monthly as they are only required to have six meetings per year. We will also begin audio recording our meetings in February.
Hopefully all of you received our postcard mailer with our survey link regarding input for our ongoing Building ALegacy initiative. To support our future planning efforts, we value your feedback. We encourage you to please take a few minutes to complete the brief online survey by February 29. Together, we can identify the best course of action for the future. To complete the survey, click here. Thank you for your time and we look forward to receiving your feedback.
Our district Operations Department recently created a new quarterly Facility Focus digital newsletter to provide updates on our facilities and projects. To view the newsletter, click here.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools.
GO BROWNS!
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar
