September Board of Education Notes
September 2023
A Message from the Board President
Meeting Recap
The District 146 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, September 11 at Kruse Education Center. Prior to the meeting, the Board handed out popsicles and ice cream during Kruse's annual Ice Cream Social.
The Board heard from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick:
- All District staff and Board Members are required to complete mandated reporter training. The Board will have access to the training module.
- Curriculum night at the elementary schools will be on Thursday, September 14. CMS will host their curriculum night on Thursday, September 21. The events will start at 6 p.m.
- The District is once again partnering with Governor State University to host Community Adult ESL classes. Registration will be held at the Ad Center on September 19 and 20. The classes are open to all District 146 community members.
- School Improvement planning is underway, and Dr. Stawick is meeting with each principal to help establish school improvement goals for the year.
- The District is offering employees the opportunity to participate in the annual wellness screening and/or receive their flu shots. These services will be available at three different dates at three different District locations. Dr. Stawick thanked Nurse Coordinator Marian Betley for organizing the events.
- Compensation and benefit information for teachers, administrators, and staff earning more than $75,000 was presented to the Board and is available on the District website.
- The Central Middle School Band is planning a trip that will require Board approval. The Board will be asked to approve the trip at their October meeting.
- Jeff Charleston, Business Director, said the general education bus service has been off to a bit of a bumpy start. Some buses have been arriving to Central later than anticipated, as those drivers have to complete a route for another school district before starting Central. American School Bus, the general education bus company, is working on solutions and has new drivers almost finished with training.
- Kelly Voliva, Director of Student Services, said the special education bus service has also been off to a bumpy start. Drivers complete routes for Central before beginning elementary school routes. Since the special education bus service is door-to-door, and delays in Central routes cause delays in elementary routes. Sunrise, the special education bus company, is working on solutions.
- The Teachers Union President told the Board that teachers and students are preparing for MAP testing. Staff has also had their first collaborative meeting with the Illinois Math and Science Academy and participants found the meeting informative.
- There are a number of outdated technology items the Board will be asked to declare as surplus at the next meeting. Upon approval by the Board, the District will be able to dispose of, donate, or sell the items.
The Board took the following action:
- Approved the Budget for Fiscal Year 2024. Jeff Charleston presented the budget to the Board at the August meeting. A public Budget Hearing was held immediately prior to this month's Board meeting.
The Board met in closed session to discuss litigation and personnel matters prior to adjourning.
The minutes of the September meeting will be available on BoardDocs once approved by the Board of Education at the next meeting. A recording of the meeting can be viewed on the District's YouTube Channel.
