Zones Cross Country
Well done to the children at all levels of the school for a sterling effort during cross country this term. A lot of hard training and challenge paid off with some outstanding performances, including our Zones Team (winning third overall), and some truly outstanding individual performances. Congratulations to all our participants!
We look forward to acknowledging our placegetters and zone team participants from Term 2 next Monday at our Sports Assembly (parents are also welcome to attend if they wish to do so).
Important - Road Safety Reminder
An important reminder again this week about Road Safety. This term, we have been made aware of two ‘near misses’ involving cars having to brake suddenly, which could have potentially resulted in serious injury or worse.
These kind of incidents are typically due to children crossing in traffic (often from between parked cars), rather than walking a little further to use a crossing.
While we remind the children at school and feature this in newsletters from time to time, it is a perennial problem, so we ask once again that you emphasise to your child that they should only ever cross at designated crossings when walking to/from school (and that adults model this by always using a crossing with your child). The key message is that a little more time taken to cross safely at a crossing point saves lives.
Lockdowns and Emergency Procedures
On another safety-related note, following the smoke/fire warning in Auckland earlier this week, I thought it would also be timely to outline our approach to emergency management.
As you would expect, we have comprehensive Emergency Management procedures here at school that fall broadly into either 'evacuation' or 'shelter in place' scenarios, which include communication protocols for parents via the HERO app and/or text (assuming communications are not disrupted).
While emergencies in schools are statistically highly unlikely, staff are well prepared to respond if needed. These days, we no longer conduct live drills for lockdowns (based on Ministry recommendations), but staff are trained in how to respond.
In the event of warnings from fire/extreme weather event/natural hazards, we follow official advice and notify parents if and when required. In such scenarios, this would include notifications of early pick-up if this was ever deemed to be advisable for safety reasons (exceptional circumstances), or information and updates on next steps if the school was required to lockdown/shelter in place for a period of time for any reason.
In all instances, student safety is our top priority. We follow best practice procedures, and would make every effort to keep caregivers informed as appropriate.
Matariki & Reports/Parent Conferences
Finally, Matariki has been shining brightly this week, with a wealth of activities focused on reflecting on things past and looking to goals for the future (not to mention arts & craft, stories, music, traditional games and harvesting of MENPS-grown kumara from our gardens!).
This celebration links perfectly with the Parent Conferences next week, in which you will have an opportunity to catch up with your child’s teacher, and also hear directly from your child about their progress and successes so far.
The focus of the Conferences is very much on celebration and checking in on goals ahead, so a reminder that if you have any private or sensitive concerns/questions you wish to raise with your child’s teacher, it is best to arrange to discuss this privately, particularly if there are any worries or queries you wish to address without your child present. Conversations of this nature don’t need to wait until formal appointments are available, and arranging a mutually-convenient time is always an option if and when the need arises.
With the public holiday tomorrow, I’d like to wish everyone a happy Matariki weekend. Next Monday, Term 2 Reports are scheduled to go ‘live’ in the HERO app (also available to view and print on a desktop browser), after which we look forward to sharing examples of your child’s learning during the Conference sessions.
Please also note the early pick-up on Thursday, 26 June. (SKiDs available if needed).
