July 11: Making Formative Assessment Come Alive in Your Classroom
- UA/UWA In-Service Center, 9:00 am-12:00 pm
- According to Dylan William, “Assessment is the bridge between teaching and learning.” So, as a teacher, how can I use formative assessment to effectively cross this bridge and close the achievement gap for my students?
- This session will focus on understanding the purpose of formative assessment and how to analyze results to guide instruction. Teachers should bring a laptop or other device; various digital tools for formative assessment will be used during the session.

- This workshop will provide education on the prevalence of student mental health issues and how they manifest in the classroom
- Learn solution-focused brief strategies to improve engagement, behavioral assessment, goal setting, and behavior change.

July 17: Best Practices for Writing Instruction
- UA/UWA In-Service Center, 12:00-3:00 pm
- Dr. Carol Donovan, UA Belser-Parton Literacy Center
- Strategies for elementary writing instruction will be discussed including getting students writing, supporting writing in the content areas, and strategies for meeting the standards for informational, argument and opinion writing.

July 22-23: ARI Structured Literacy Training for Elementary Educators (K-5)
- UA/UWA In-Service Center, 9:00 am-2:30 each day
- Kandy Streety, Alabama Reading Initiative
- Elementary educators and administrators working in grades K-5 will have the opportunity to gain understanding of structured literacy by deepening reading content knowledge and gaining confidence in implementing multisensory literacy instruction.
- This two-day session will grow educators in these areas of structured literacy: The Big 5 of Reading; Rules of Language Structure; Reading and Writing Fluency; Syllable Types and Division; Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots; and Vocabulary and Comprehension.

July 23: Reaching Reluctant Writers (Grades 4-12)
- UA/UWA In-Service Center, 12:00-3:00 pm
- Dr. Melissa Shields, ALSDE Regional Support Coordinator
- This session will demonstrate strategies that help bridge the gap for today's learners in the language arts classroom.
- Learn best practices for teaching poetry, narratives, nonfiction, grammar, and punctuation that both engage and challenge students to become better writers, especially those who are most reluctant to write.

July 29-31: ARI Certified Module Facilitator Training

- The Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) is offering the next step in a four-phase process toward becoming an ARI Certified Module Facilitator. This Phase II professional learning is designed for school-based reading specialists who have met the Phase I eligibility requirement.
- Half-day sessions focused upon each of the facilitator modules

Alabama Best Practices Center: 2019-2020 Powerful Conversations West and Key Leaders West
The UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center will host the following two networks from the Alabama Best Practices Center:
- Powerful Conversations West 2019-2020
- Key Leaders Network West 2019-2020
The focus of PCN West will be social-emotional learning; the text, All Learning is Social and Emotional, will be the targeted study. KLN West will utilize John Hatties's 10 Mindframes for Visible Learning.

National Board Candidate Support from the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center

- NBCT grant application has been released! It is due by September 20, 2019. The application can be found at Ms. Leslie Hughes, NBCT facilitator, will discuss the grant application during our first informational session on August 22. STI-Pd registration for all sessions is posted at http://inservice.ua.edu/announcements.
Alabama Robotics Grant Application: Due August 31!
- The FY2020 Alabama Robotics Grant application has been released. Visit http://www.amsti.org/robotics for more information.

September 10 and 11: PowerSchool Training
- Our region will host training on the new PowerSchool Professional Learning Platform on September 10 and 11. There will be a morning (8:30 am-11:30 am) and afternoon session (12:30 pm-3:30 pm) held on each day. You need only to register for one of the half-day sessions as each half-day session will be a repeat of the same information.

- Teams of 3-4 are encourage to attend; this training will primarily be aimed at those who currently function in Chalkable PD as PD Managers and Curriculum Managers at the District/LEA level. Those that are responsible for creating courses and confirming attendance in Chalkable are highly encouraged to attend.
- September 10: The September 10 morning and afternoon session will be held at the UA/UWA In-Service Center, 260 Kilgore Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL.
- September 11: The September 11 morning and afternoon session will be held at Demopolis Middle School Lab 212, 300 E. Pettus St., Demopolis, AL.
