Diwali
Diwali, or Deepawali, is an Indian holiday known as the Festival Of Lights. Diwali is celebrated by spending time with family and friends, sharing great food, and decorating with flowers and rangoli (colorful sand or rice flour paintings). We also light candles or diyas (oil lamps) to symbolize the triumph of good over evil, truth over ignorance, and light over darkness.

JAZZ HANDS FOR AUTISM ASSEMBLY
JAZZ HANDS FOR AUTISM ASSEMBLY
In recognition of Disability Awareness Month, on Wednesday, October 23, students have an assembly with Jazz Hands for Autism. Their website (https://www.jazzhandsforautism.org/) states that their mission is “to break stigmas, to empower neurodivergent creatives and to create pathways to inclusion through expression, education and employment in the entertainment industry and beyond.”
More from their website:
[Jazz Hands for Autism] hosted the first Jazz Hands Concert on May 25th, 2014 with 3 musicians. [They have] since grown into a talent advocacy group and provider of individualized music-based training, vocational development and job placement for over 150 musicians with autism. Through the Jazz Hands Concert Series and the Jazz Hands Musicians Academy, Jazz Hands For Autism is becoming increasingly recognized for its unique approach to inclusion for individuals with autism in the music industry - by using music as vehicle through which confidence is built within the individual and bridges are built with the world at large.
Visit the website to meet some of the musicians: https://www.jazzhandsforautism.org/meet-the-musicians
Here are a few questions you can ask your student about the performance:
- What ideas or feelings did you get from watching this performance?
- What did you learn about disability generally or autism specifically from Jazz Hands for Autism?
- What questions did you have for the performers about their music?

Lula Washington Dance Theater Assembly Student Summary
Lula Washington Dance Theater Assembly
By Chloe Cueva (5th grade)
This week we had an assembly with the Lula Washington Dance Theater. The Lula Washington Dance theater is 44 years old and they are a contemporary modern dance company. One of the performers named Khaleela, was a former Lin Howe student. The first dance they performed was called “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” It was originally a poem, but people kept singing it so they turned it into a song. The scarves used in this dance were important and symbolized different things. The black scarf signifies the people, red represents the people who died, gold represents wealth, and green represents the land. The styles performed were classical ballet, old style jazz (like the Charleston), and tap dance. They asked for volunteers to come up and learn some modern dance moves.
Next, the dancers performed the Magalena Caribbean dance. After this dance, during the upper grade assembly, they asked for more volunteers to come up on to the stage and pretend to be in the Underground Railroad during the time of Harriet Tubman. We learned that during this time, slaves were taken all over the world. The volunteers were told to listen, focus and do what the slave master said while they were inspected.
My favorite part of the assembly was when they showed us how to do the Dab and the Billy Wap. To end the assembly, the dance company performed the popular moves the Floss, the Dab and the Griddy.
