News
Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
As we close out the month of October, I want to take a moment to recognize the exciting events and important opportunities this time of year brings for our school community.
First, we are looking forward to celebrating Nevada Day later this week! As a reminder, there will be no school on Friday, October 25th, in observance of this special day. Nevada Day is more than just a state holiday; itβs a time to honor our stateβs rich history, culture, and the unique spirit that makes Nevada such a wonderful place to live and learn. I hope you all take the time to enjoy the celebrations and reflect on what makes our state so remarkable.
October is also School Bus Safety Awareness Month, and I want to stress the importance of keeping our students safe as they travel to and from school. Please remind your children to always follow the safety rules when riding the bus, such as staying seated, keeping the aisles clear, and listening to the bus driverβs instructions. For those of us who drive, letβs be extra vigilant around school busesβalways stop when the bus has its stop sign extended, and watch carefully for children crossing the street. Together, we can help make sure all our students arrive at school and return home safely.
I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the parents and guardians who attended our recent Parent-Teacher Conferences. Your participation shows a strong commitment to your child's education, and we appreciate your time and engagement. If you were unable to attend, I encourage you to reach out to your child's school to schedule a meeting or to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
Being involved in your child's education is one of the most important ways to support their success. When parents are actively engaged, it not only boosts a child's confidence but also improves their academic performance, attendance, and behavior. Your involvement shows your child that you value their education, which motivates them to strive for their best.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our school community. Letβs make October a month of growth, celebration, safety, and involvement!
Warm regards,
Derild Parsons
Superintendent

IMPORTANT Health Services Information
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.
LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Attendance Reminder for Families β
As we approach the "giving" season, we want to encourage our families to review the health information provided above from our Chief School Nurse. Additionally, we'd like to emphasize our attendance policies and procedures.
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT! (State Law NRS 392.130)
Please note that any absence not excused by a medical/mental health professional or a school administrator will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Any absence that goes unreported by the parent will default to a truancy after three days.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided or School Admin Excused (not counted against student attendance).
Notification: Schools may notify families of any concerning patterns associated with excessive absences; including but not limited to notes home, School Attendance Review Board (SARB) warnings, pre-SARB notices, and SARB attendance contracts.

π Migrant Education Program Newsletter
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) offers technical assistance and financial support to enhance educational opportunities and academic success for migrant children, youth, agricultural workers, fishers, and their families. Its primary goal is to ensure that migrant children receive the same free public education as other children. MEP funds, which are federal, support high-quality education programs for migratory children aged 3 to 21. These funds help prevent penalties due to disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic standards as children move between states or within a state. Additionally, MEP ensures that migratory children have full and fair opportunities to meet the same challenging state academic standards expected of all students.

Lori Kaisers CCMS newspaper elective class published their first paper for the 24-25 school year. Students covered topics such as the new principal, new rules, safety at CCMS, sports, and the homecoming dance. Below is a student-written piece from their first edition:
Safety Comes First at CCMS
Written by: Abbigale Parren
This year the Vice Principal of Churchill County Middle School, Mr. Brent Judy, is focused on safety. In
order to always be prepared, CCMS has different protocols to prepare for any situation. There are drills that we have to follow as students to keep us safe. There is the fire drill where we evacuate the building. There is a soft lockdown where we can continue working but can't leave the classroom. There is a hard lockdown where we are in the classroom and have to get to the safest place in the classroom, stay quiet, and turn off the lights. The goal of a hard lockdown is to make any intruders think the room is empty. Teachers lock the door and hide with the students. Finally, there is an earthquake drill where we have to get under desks or some classrooms have cabinets that you can go in. Kristina Langguth, a teacher at CCMS said, βI feel Churchill County Middle School is a safe space.β One thing she believes would make the school safer is, βhaving a school resource officer at the school full time.β

Last week, students in Torie Sandberg's class had a busy week of learning. They worked on the theme of community, examining how different locations influence experiences and perspectives. As part of their exploration, the class read about Arizona and then participated in a fun and creative project where students painted cacti inspired by their readings. This activity reinforced their learning and allowed them to express their artistic abilities. In math, students expanded their skills in data representation by reading and creating bar graphs. Students also went on an exciting field trip to Lattin Farms where they got to pick out a pumpkin at the pumpkin patch and see all the farm animals.
