Accessing Progress Monitoring Plans in FOCUS
As a parent/guardian, if your child has a Progress Monitoring Plan (PMP), you can access this information, as well as the progress your child is making through the FOCUS Parent Portal. Please view the handout to the left for the steps to view your child’s Progress Monitoring Plan.
Assessment Schedule for Progressing Monitoring 2
The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) is a progress monitoring system that is administered three times per year to track your student’s progress in learning the Benchmarks of Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards throughout this school year. Your student will participate in the second administration (PM2) of the Grade 3, 4, or 5 Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) ELA Reading and Mathematics assessment on the dates listed below. Your student’s results from PM2 are for informational purposes only, and you will be provided with information about how to access the results after testing is completed.
· December 2: PM 2 - 3rd Grade Math
· December 2: PM 2- 5th Grade Math
· December 3: PM 2 - 3rd Grade ELA
· December 3: PM 2 -5th Grade ELA
· December 9: PM 2 - 4th Grade ELA
· December 10: PM 2 - 4th Math
· January 8: PM 2 - 5th Grade Science
FAST assessments are computer-adaptive tests taken on a computer or tablet. The questions get easier or more difficult depending on how the student responds, and each student will see different questions from a common item bank. Each test attempt (PM1, PM2, and PM3) will present 35–40 items that will cover the entire test “blueprint,” meaning students will encounter items representative of the standards within the subject or grade level. For more information on the test design, please visit https://www.fldoe.org/accountability/assessments/k-12-student-assessment/best/. If you or your student would like to interact with the online testing platform or review FAST ELA Reading and Mathematics sample items at home, sample test materials are available at https://flfast.org/families.html.
Please review the following policies with your student before testing:
Electronic Devices—Students are not permitted to access any electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones, smartphones, and smartwatches, at any time during testing or during breaks (e.g., restroom). If your student is found with an electronic device or is found using Bluetooth/wireless headphones/earbuds during testing, his or her test may be invalidated.
Calculator Policy—For Grades 7–8 FAST Mathematics, approved handheld scientific calculators may be used. For Grade 6 FAST Mathematics, a handheld four-function calculator may be used.
Testing Rules Acknowledgment— All tests include a Testing Rules Acknowledgment that reads: “I understand the testing rules that were just read to me. If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated.” Prior to testing, test administrators read the rules to students, and students acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by clicking the box in the secure browser indicating they understand the testing rules.
Discussing Test Content after Testing— The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they click the box to accept the Testing Rules Acknowledgment states that because the content of all statewide assessments is secure, students may not discuss or reveal details about the test content (including test items and passages) after the test. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting to social media sites. Please make sure your student understands this policy prior to testing and remind them that “discussing” test content includes any kind of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, posting to social media, or sharing online. While students may not share information about secure test content after testing, this policy is not intended to prevent students from discussing their testing experiences with their parents/families.
Working Independently—Students are responsible for doing their own work during the test and for protecting their answers from being seen by others. If students are caught cheating during testing, their tests will be invalidated.
Testing Accommodations—If your student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), a Section 504 Plan, or is an English Language Learner (ELL) or a recently exited ELL, please contact the school to discuss any testing accommodations that will be provided for your student.
If you have any questions related to this test administration, you may contact Kim Alexander, School Counselor, at 850-936-6060.
For more information about the FAST program, please visit the portal at FLFAST.org.
Thank you for supporting your student and encouraging him or her to do his or her best during this test administration.
Attendance Procedures & Policy
Excused Absences:
Absences granted for personal illness, illness or death of a member of the immediate family, medical or dental appointments, religious holidays, religious instruction, court date and special emergencies, or pre-arranged absences approved by the principal or designee. The parent/guardian must notify the school to provide the reason for the absence or respond to the school’s inquiry about the reason for the absence within three (3) days of the absence, or it becomes an unexcused absence. If your child has a prolonged illness (longer than two days), please advise the office. Attendance at school is very important. Many lessons are conducted through groups and activity projects where the material covered is difficult to make up.
Pre-Arranged Absences:
Pre-arranged absence requests must be made in writing by legal parent/guardian (form available in the front office and on school website) at least five (5) school days prior to the date of the absence, except in the case of an emergency. Requests for pre-approved absences should be made using the school form located at https://wni.santarosaschools.org/ .Click on the link on the front page that says, “Request a Pre-Approved Absence”. Student/Parent shall make pre-arrangements for schoolwork to be completed; it will be due the day the student returns to school. Work completed in the pre-arranged time allotted will be given full credit.
Unexcused Absences:
Absences for shopping trips, vacations, pleasure trips, truancy, missing the bus, oversleeping, excessive illness without doctor verification, dismissal from school (out-of-school suspension does not count toward truancy absences), or other avoidable absences which have not been pre-arranged and approved by the Principal or designee.
Late Check-Ins/Early Check-Outs:
Students arriving after 8:15 AM will receive a “Late to School Check-In” code. Early check-out ends at 2:00 PM. Students checking out of school prior to the end of the school day (2:29 PM) will receive an “Early Check-Out” code. Three (3) unexcused accumulated “Late to School Check-Ins” or “Early Check-Outs” will equate to the student receiving one (1) unexcused absence for truancy purposes. A parent/guardian or contact person listed with the school must present a picture ID in order to check students out of school. In cases of legal separation or divorce of parents, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian with legal custody to file a certified copy of the custody agreement with the school office.
To report an absence, you may upload your child’s note to the FOCUS Parent Portal or click on the link provided on our school website “Report An Absence”. https://wni.santarosaschools.org/

Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) Corner
West Navarre Intermediate is proud to be a Positive Behavioral and Intervention Supports (PBIS) Model School. The PBIS framework provides schools with an opportunity to teach expected behaviors utilizing positive reinforcement along with more targeted interventions for students who require more intensive supports. Our school population is divided into five different communities and students earn navigator points/bucks for their respective communities by displaying the school-wide behavior expectations below. Each 9 weeks, the community with the most navigator points/bucks will be rewarded with a special event. Our goal is to maintain a program that fosters school-wide unity, positive behavior, and promotes lifelong learning. Our communities and school wide expectations are as follows: Fidelis (Loyalty), Erubesco (Respect), Officium (Responsibility), Veritas (Truth), and Animus (Courage).
Navigator of the Quarter
Each quarter our classroom teachers will recognize one student for exhibiting the school wide expectations. Those students will be celebrated at an assembly. Each student selected will receive an invitation to bring home to their parents. Our next Navigator of the Quarter will be on December 19.
Navigator Bucks
- Students earn Navigator bucks/points for exhibiting positive expectations.
- Points are collected weekly and used to determine the quarterly winning community.
- Students can redeem their Navigator bucks at the end of each quarter at "Community Concessions".
Positive Office Referrals
Teachers can submit Positive Behavior Referrals to Administration. These will be a surprise for students! Teachers will submit and then administration will call the student up and make a positive phone call home praising the student for the character trait(s) he/she exhibited. These students also receive a brag tag and community pencil.

Students are asked to be at their bus stop 10 minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time. Loud talking, changing seats, running, arms or heads out the windows, fighting, and similar behavior is not permissible. Bus rules will be clearly posted on all buses, and students will be expected to abide by those rules. Volunteer Information
Volunteers play an integral role at WNIS. We will host volunteer orientation in the fall for 2024-2025. Each volunteer is asked to complete an application, which will be presented to the School Board for approval.
We request that these be completed by the first month of the school year for all family members who will possibly volunteer during the 2024-2025 school year.
All volunteers visiting the school are required to report to the front office upon arrival and provide photo identification for verification. Volunteers are required to wear the identification badge provided by the school during the time they are volunteering. Once the volunteer has completed volunteering for the day/activity, they are required to return their pass to the office and sign out prior to leaving.
For your planning purposes, please keep in mind all volunteers must be school board approved before volunteering. Please note that you are free to volunteer in areas of the school other than the classroom, for example we always need help in the library/media center. Volunteer applications should be turned in at least a month in advance to meet board approval guidelines.
For more information about the school volunteer program, please contact Mrs. Drost, Assistant Principal, at 850-936-6060.
