Jackson Reed High School Course Selection - Due 3/28
As promotion gets closer, now is the time for our 8th grade students to start planning for their transition to high school. How exciting! Staff from Jackson Reed High School visited our students this week and held a virtual meeting with families to share information about the course selection process. Students should have brought home a form to select their courses.
All students are asked to discuss the attached course selection form with their families and bring the completed, signed form to their advisory teacher by March 28th. Please reach out to the Jackson Reed team or our wonderful 8th grade counselor, Ms. Travers, with any questions about this process.
Note: even if your student is considering other high school options, we ask all students to go through this process to learn about the options available to them in high school. Submitting this form helps the Jackson Reed team plan for next year, but does not lock your student in to attending Jackson Reed.
Student-Led Conferences - March 13th
Student Led Conferences will take place on March 13, 2025. This is our second conference day of the year, and our students have been working hard to prepare. Due to our first 8th grade International Trip to Costa Rica, there will be some shifts to which adults will be supporting students during conferences. Students will be supported by either their advisor, case manager or another one of their teachers. Each students' advisor and the adult supporting their conference on conference day (if different) will reach out to share instructions for how to make appointments beginning March 3rd.
Costa Rica travelers will not be present on 3/13, as they will be beginning their international adventure. If families feel strongly that they would like a Student Led Conference, they should reach out to their team teachers directly to schedule.
8th Grade Superlative Voting
This week in homerooms, 8th grade students will vote on their class superlatives! Students will receive the link in class and the results will be shared in the yearbook. Please direct any questions to your student's 1st period teacher.
World Language Trip Make-Up Work
Traveling abroad for school is an exciting opportunity, and the Deal team is honored to have so many 8th graders taking this adventure. While we consider these trips an important part of our students’ education and the absences will be excused, it is important that students keep up with the learning they will miss while they are out of the country.
To support students and families, every student traveling on an international trip will be given a personalized make-up work list based on their individual schedule. These lists will be distributed by homeroom teachers on Monday and families are encouraged to ask their students about their list. Students will have one week after the return of their trip to complete their assignments without penalty.
All content-related questions should be directed to the teacher. Unless otherwise noted, all assignments will be visible in Canvas. If your student loses their list, team teachers will have access to a digital version they can share with families.

Ms. Thompson will return to the classroom this week
Ms. Walters: History
Last week students were able to finish learning about Westward Expansion and the various perspectives of people living during that time period. Students analyzed the various treaties that the U.S signed with the Native Americans and how those treaties impacted the relationship between the U.S and the indigenous nations. Students were then able to take that information and determine if the U.S should pay reparations today to repair the harm that was caused by broken treaties and the Indian Removal Act. At the end of the week students were introduced to their end of unit summative project.
Next week's schedule is below!
- Monday: Unit 4 Newspaper Summative
- Tuesday: Unit 4 Newspaper Summative
- Wednesday: Unit 4 Newspaper Summative
- Thursday: Student Led Conferences
- Friday: No School
Ms. Cunha: English
This week in ELA, students practiced writing argumentative thesis statements and began their "Candy Bar Essay". Students chose whether to argue that fruit flavored candy or chocolate candy is better. Students researched evidence for their claims and began to address counterarguments.
Next week, on Monday students will write their final drafts of the "Candy Bar Essay" and submit them. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will begin reading and annotating "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Students will all tape an annotation guide into the front cover of their books to assist them with their annotations. Please make sure that your student has their own copy of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by MONDAY, MARCH 10!
Homework: Students may finish their "Candy Bar" Essay graphic organizer over the weekend. Students were also assigned 3 vocabulary lessons and 3 reading lessons in reading plus this week.
Ms. Anderson: Math
This past week math 8 students worked on estimating square roots and began their exploration of the Pythagorean theorem through a home design activity. This coming week students will take an assessment on the Pythagorean theorem on Tuesday or Wednesday. Algebra 1 students took their end of Module test on the first half of quadratics. This coming week students will learn about the quadratics formula and begin unit 7 in out book. On March 17th, students in both classes will also be celebrating Pi Day at school. Students are allowed to bring circular snacks to class.
